Biography
Robbie Basho was the least celebrated of the trio of '60s acoustic guitar virtuosos who established themselves as innovators on the Takoma label (the other two were John Fahey and Leo Kottke ). It's not hard to surmise why Basho found a natural home on Takoma. Like Fahey and Kottke, he was determined to expand the horizons of the acoustic steel-string guitar by utilizing dissonance, unusual tunings, and influences from all over the world. At the same time, it's not hard to see why Basho attracted a smaller, more specialized audience than Fahey and Kottke. His work requires a little more time and effort to absorb, and is more colored by Eastern and Indian modal influences. "Haunting" is an overused adjective for Basho's instrumentals (as it has often been for Fahey's records), but entirely appropriate. Difficult to pigeonhole and categorize, Basho's strums were characterized by a tension between spiritual, meditative moods and bursts of restlessness. In addition to American folk and Middle Eastern influences, traces of classical, Irish, koto, medieval, and other musics could be heard in his material (and he had notably little pure blues influence when compared to his Takoma labelmates). Occasionally he would add some eerie whistling, or even eerier, not to say unsettling, singing; even dedicated Basho fans concede that his vocals weren't what you came to hear.

"No matter where your interest lies, you will not be able to accomplish anything unless you bring your deepest devotion to it." - Matsuo Basho Basho "In the second year of the Jokyo period (1685) at dawn on the 14th day of the Ninth Month, Basho had a strange dream in which he was caught in a rainstorm and ran into a shrine to take shelter. The priest scolded him and turned him away, but then said he could stay if he could make a haiku that fit the moment. Basho replied, 'Oh, well, at this very place ...' and produced a haiku." - Reference: volume IX of the complete works of Basho published by Kadokawa Shoten
Matsuo Munefusa, alias Basho (1644-94), was a Japanese poet and writer during the early Edo period. He took his pen name Basho from his basho-an, a hut made of plantain leaves, to where he would withdraw from society for solitude. Born of a weathy family, Basho was a Samurai until the age of 20, at which time he devoted himself to his poetry. Basho was a main figure in the development of haiku, and is considered to have written the most perfect examples of the form. His poetry explores the beauties of nature and are influenced by Zen Buddhism, which lends itself to the meditative solitude sensed in his haiku. He traveled extensively throughout his lifetime. His 1689 five-month journey deep into the country north and west of Edo provided the insight for his most famous work Oku no hosomichi (Narrow Road to the Deep North). This great work was posthumoustly published in 1702 and is still read by most Japanse high school students.

    34. REN The Mechanism Of Linking In Japanese Culture
Text of a talk given by Yuko Tanaka, of Hosei University in Tokyo, in 1993 at the Nissan Institute, Oxford University. Discusses the concept of linking, with special emphasis on linked poetry of basho.

REN The mechanism of linking in Japanese culture Yuko Tanaka Hosei University in Tokyo Read in 1993 at Nissan Institute, Oxford University. Introduction Today, I would like to talk about ren . I have been thinking about and doing research on culture in the Edo period(1603 to 1867) in Japan with reference to this term. Ren means "to connect" "to link" and "to gather together", and it refers to a basic mechanism by which a process emerges from the interaction of words, verses or stanzas, sentences, objects, and people in the culture of Japan especially in the Edo period. We can find various examples of ren in the Edo period, a lot of ren groups or the ren of haikai In today's lecture I am going to talk about ren using a number of themes. Firstly is a short explanation of haikai with typical examples ,then the origin and the history of linked poetry, followed by linked themes in a few examples of prose; fourthly linked images in paintings, then renju , which means linked people supporting ren , and finally za which means the place of ren Linked poetry As you know waka is a traditional type of Japanese poetry which has 5-7-5-7-7 syllables, and

    36. Hass On Haiku
Selected basho and Issa haiku translated into English by U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Hass, along with excerpts from his introduction to The Essential Haiku .

Robert Hass on Haiku The Essential Haiku contain remarks that seem relevant to "A Story About the Body." As more than one critic has observed, Hass's ongoing study of Japanese poetry is apparent in the Human Wishes prose poems. These excerpts help elucidate how "A Story About the Body" not only conveys the condensed and detached feeling of Haiku, but also exhibits many of the Japanese form's conventions.] . . . the spirit of haiku required that the language be kept plain. "’The function of Haik[u],’" Basho once said, "’is to rectify common speech.’" It also demanded accurate and original images, drawn mostly from common life . . . The insistence on time and place was crucial for writers of haiku. The seasonal reference was called a kigo and a haiku was thought to be incomplete without it . . . The practice was sufficiently codified and there was even a rule that the seasonal reference should always appear either in the first or third unit of the three phrase poem . . . If the first level of a haiku is its location in nature, itse second is almost always some implicit Buddhist reflection on nature . . . At the core of Buddhist metaphysics are three ideas about natural things: that they are transient; that they are contingent; and that they suffer . . .

    Matsuo Basho (1644 - 1694)
Basho (bah-shoh), pseudonym of Matsuo Munefusa (1644-94), Japanese poet, considered the finest writer of Japanese haiku during the formative years of the genre. Born into a samurai family prominent among nobility, Basho rejected that world and became a wanderer, studying Zen, history, and classical Chinese poetry, living in apparently blissful poverty under a modest patronage and from donations by his many students. From 1667 he lived in Edo (now Tokyo), where he began to compose haiku. The structure of his haiku reflects the simplicity of his meditative life. When he felt the need for solitude, he withdrew to his basho-an , a hut made of plantain leaves ( basho )- hence his pseudonym. Basho infused a mystical quality into much of his verse and attempted to express universal themes through simple natural images, from the harvest moon to the fleas in his cottage. Basho brought to haiku "the Way of Elegance" ( fuga-no-michi ), deepened its Zen influence, and approached poetry itself as a way of life (
