The son of Joseph-Francois Baudelaire and Caroline Archimbaut Dufays, Charles Baudelaire was born in Paris in 1821. Baudelaire's father, who was thirty years older than his mother, died when the poet was six. Baudelaire was very close with his mother (much of what is known of his later life comes from the letters he wrote her), but was deeply distressed when she married Major Jacques Aupick. In 1833, the family moved to Lyons where Baudelaire attended a military boarding school. Shortly before graduation, he was kicked out for refusing to give up a note passed to him by a classmate. Baudelaire spent the next two years in Paris' Latin Quarter pursuing a career as a writer and accumulating debt. It is also believed that he contracted syphilis around this time.

Baudelaire, Charles (1821-1867) A central figure in nineteenth-century French literature, Charles Baudelaire was born on April 9, 1821, in Paris, and died on August 31, 1867. Two collections of Baudelaire's poetry continue to intrigue and influence writers: Les fleurs du mal Flowers Of Evil, 1857) and Le spleen de Paris Paris Spleen, 1869). In the latter collection, published posthumously, he essentially invented the "prose poem." Had he written only poetry, Baudelaire's reputation would be secure; however, he is also an important art and literary critic. His defense of painters not recognized by the artistic establishment of his time, especially the Impressionists, helped gain them an audience and respect. Likewise, his translations of Poe's work established Poe in France as a major literary talent. Sponsor Message.

Customer Reviews
Recommend Have been reading this dreamlike book for years. My recent purchase was as a Christmas present. Baudelaire orchestrates the debut of an anonymous (but real) cartoonist in this series of reviews. So, he introduces the sensibility of the artist, rather than the man. He argues that art is on the street beside you, in the room with you, in the mirror. Then why isn't every person an artist? What thing do people connect to the reporting senses? Why are so many who call themselves artists not artists; what makes some others, who have not chosen to make art, artists? If you want to understand the meaning of words like "dilettante," "artificial," "professional," "curiosity," "inspiration," and the tired vocabulary of the plastic sphere re-invigored at its origin, read this book. Usable handbook. Knowing Baudelaire will reveal further the horrible and ragged side of the aesthetic here espoused.
