PIERRE AUGUSTIN CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS
This article was originally published in Encyclopedia Britannica, Eleventh Edition, Volume III . Anonymous. Cambridge: University Press, 1910. pp. 589-90.
BEAUMARCHAIS, PIERRE AUGUSTIN CARON DE (1732-1799), French dramatist, was born in Paris on January 24, 1732. His father, a watchmaker named Caron, brought him up to the same trade. He was an unusually precocious and lively boy, shrewd, sagacious, passionately fond of music and imbued with a strong desire for rising in the world. At the age of twenty-one he invented a new escapement for watches, which was pirated by a rival maker. Young Caron at once published his grievance in the Mercure , and had the matter referred to the Academy of Sciences, which decided in his favour. This affair brought him into notice at court; he was appointed, or at least called himself, watchmaker to the king, who ordered from him a watch similar to the one he had made for Mme de Pompadour. His handsome figure and cool assurance enabled him to make his way at court. Mme Franquet, the wife of an old court official, persuaded her husband to make over his office to young Caron, and, on her husband's death, a few months later, married the handsome watchmaker. Caron at the same time assumed the name Beaumarchais; and four years later, by purchasing the office of secretary to the king obtained a patent of nobility. Goethe 's Clavigo , for Beaumarchais did not pursue his vengeance beyond words. Beaumarchais made his first essay as a writer for the stage with the sentimental drama

Beaumarchais was born Pierre-Augustin Caron, the only boy among the six children of a watchmaker. There were ten children, six daughters and four sons but his three brothers all died young. The family was comfortable and Caron had a peaceful and happy childhood, in contrast to much of his adult life. Caron left school at the age of 13 to apprentice under his father. In July of 1753, at the age of 21, he invented an escape mechanism for watches that allowed them to be made substantially more accurate and compact.

Scoundrel Time: Manuel Blanc keeps a wary eye on Fabrice Luchini in 'Beaumarchais.' 'Beaumarchais' sweetens a scoundrel By Richard von Busack T HIS WEEK'S FILM HITS include a fantasy about a misunderstood tsar of Russia and his lovely family murdered by a scheming zombie. As a counterbalance to this reactionary treat, it's pleasant to see a film that's in favor of the French Revolution. Director Edouard Molinaro's Beaumarchais is a costume comedy/drama based on an unpublished play by Sacha Guitry. It follows 10 years in the career of Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais (1732-1799), the playwright, businessman and intriguer best known as the author of the plays that were the sources for Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and Rossini's The Barber of Seville. These works, which satirized aristocratic pretension, have a daring we can't understand today. Napoleon said famously that The Marriage of Figaro was "the revolution already in action." Beaumarchais was born a watchmaker's son and ended up a titled nobleman, thanks to sound investments and a strategic marriage. He was the confidant of kings and a friend to some of the most important men of the time. He was not just a spy, a lover and a gunrunner, as depicted here, but also a slaver. Beaumarchais invested in the slave trade after previously having written a poem denouncing it. Thus commerce doth make cowards of us all. Despite this richno, wealthymaterial, despite also the handsome appointments, expensive costumes and sweet-faced starlets

The play was at first banned in Vienna because of its satire of the aristocracy. Beaumarchais said in his preface to the play that it was Louis François, Prince of Conti who requested that this sequel to The Barber of Seville be written. It is considered an early indication of the French Revolution in its denouncement of the privileges of the nobility. In it, Beaumarchais uses the main characters from

(credit: Giraudon/Art Resource, New York) The Barber of Seville (1772) was kept off the stage for three years because it criticized the aristocracy. His Marriage of Figaro (1784) similarly censured the nobility and it, too, was initially banned. The plays became famous operas by Gioacchino Rossini and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , respectively. He founded the Société des Auteurs (1777) to enable playwrights to obtain royalty payments. His wealth led, ironically, to his temporary imprisonment during the French Revolution, an event his plays were sometimes said to have sparked. Pierre de Beaumarchais (1732-1799) French playwright and adventurer, whose best known comedies are The Barber of Seville (1775) and The Marriage of Figaro (1784). The plays inspired two famous operas, the first composed by Gioachhino Rossini, and the second by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Beaumarchais was one of the most colorful characters of the old Regime, who earned and lost fortunes, served as a secret agent in Britain, and supplied guns to the American revolutionaries. Although he supported the French Revolution, he was forced to go into exile. "No, Monsieur le Comte, you shan't have her! You shan't have her. Because you are a great noble, you think you are a great genius! Nobility, a fortune, a rank, appointments to office: all this makes a man so proud! What did you do to earn all this? You took the trouble to get born - nothing more. Moreover, you're really a pretty ordinary fellow. While as for me, lost in the crowd, I've had to use more knowledge, more brains, just to keep alive than your likes have to spend on governing Spain and the Empire for a century. And you want to contest with me - ..." (from The Marriage of Figaro France joined the American War of Independence against Britain officially in 1778, but Beaumarchais had already supplied arms to the American colonies. He also organized a fleet of merchant ships to carry cannons, ammunition and other equipment and assist the Continental Congress. In exchange for the war supplies the agent of Congress promised to send back produce, chiefly tobacco, as compensation of the debt. 40 years later Beaumarchais's daughter still waited for the compensation, which was about 2 million francs. Congress replied: "Take one third or nothing."
