Beckford, William
(b. Sept. 29, 1760, London, Eng.d. May 2, 1844, Bath, Somerset), eccentric English dilettante, author of the Gothic novel Vathek Fonthill Abbey, the most sensational building of the English Gothic revival. Beckford was the only legitimate son of William Beckford the Elder, twice lord mayor of London, and was the heir to a vast fortune accumulated by three generations of his Beckford ancestors, who were sugar planters in Jamaica. His mother was descended from Mary Stuart. He was a precocious child, and his natural talents were given every encouragement. At five he received piano lessons from the nine-year-old W.A. Mozart. He also received training in architecture and drawing from prominent teachers. He inherited his fortune in 1770, upon the death of his father. In 1778, after a period of travel and study in Europe, Beckford returned to England, where he later met the 11-year-old son and heir of Viscount Courtenay, a boy for whom Beckford felt strong romantic (but probably not sexual) attraction. Following a lavish three-day Christmas party held in the boy's honour at Fonthill, Beckford conceived the story of the caliph Vathek, a monarch as impious as he is voluptuous, who builds a tower so high that from it he can survey all the kingdoms of the world. Vathek challenges Mohammed in the seventh heaven and so brings about his own damnation and his banishment to the subterranean kingdom ruled by Eblis, prince of darkness.

Beckford, William (1760-1844) Extremely wealthy and connected to the aristocracy, British author and connoisseur William Beckford was ostracized by English society for the last sixty years of his life because of his homosexuality. Beckford's father was alderman and lord mayor of London, and his mother, connected by marriage to the Dukes of Hamilton, a stern and unrelenting Calvinist. Beckford's father died when he was ten, and his mother decided that it would be best not to risk sending her delicate son away to school. She hired a series of tutors and monitored his education herself. Beckford early on displayed an interest in art and music, and especially in the exotic Oriental arts of the Arab world. As he entered adolescence, he was lucky that one of his series of tutors was Alexander Cozens, whose own fascination with Eastern lore encouraged Beckford's own. Sponsor Message.

Jump to: navigation search Beckford, William (1759-1844): English Writer. The author of Vathek , one of the most important of the pseudo-oriental novels of the eighteenth-century, Beckford led a bizarre life of aristocratic eccentricity and splendor. Born into one of the wealthiest of London families, he inherited at a young age an immense fortune, which allowed him to collect every trifle and lavish his money on building Fonthill Abbey in Wiltshire, an obsession for most of his life. He was forced to abandon this gothic extravagance in 1725 when its central tower collapsed; he died practically penniless. Yet Beckford had real literary ability. He read as a child with fascination the recently translated collection of medieval Arab tales, A Thousand and One Nights . In 1782, he began in French, published in English translation in 1786, his Arab tale featuring a caliph named Vathek set in the exotic Middle East with a cast of “oriental” types drawn from a well-established tradition of eastern tales. Beckford’s story took the form of a Faustian legend with its Satanic hero being punished in the Hall of Eblis, resembling Dante’s inferno, along with other sinners who dared to flaunt conventional morality. However, Vathek , unlike the popular pseudo-oriental tales of the age, which were mostly moral apologues, was really an exotic thriller and celebration of the Caliph’s vices and sadistic pleasures. It thus foreshadowed the dark romanticism of works like

    Beckford, William
Beckford, William, , English author. A wealthy dilettante, Beckford had a great desire to ascend to the nobility. Unfortunately his erratic and strange behavior often worked against his ambitions. About 1796 he built in Wiltshire an extravagant Gothic castle, Fonthill Abbey, where he lived in mysterious seclusion and earned himself the reputation of an eccentric. Although not deeply interested in politics, he served in the House of Commons from 1784 to 1794 and from 1806 to 1820. Beckford is chiefly remembered today for the Gothic romance Vathek, a bizarre tale about the adventures of the shockingly cruel Caliph Vathek. The book was written in French but was first published (1786) in English translation. He was also the author of several books of travel and two burlesques on the sentimental novels of his day, The Elegant Enthusiast (1796) and Azemia See biography by P. Summers (1966).
