In 1899, at Osborn’s suggestion, he was appointed Curator of Ornithology for the New York Zoological Society In 1900, he began undertaking field research, which eventually led to him being made the New York Zoological Society’s Director of the Department of Tropical Research in 1919. In addition to the United States and Canada, he eventually undertook expeditions in Trinidad Venezuela Brazil and British Guiana Beebe wrote many popular books of his expeditions, some of which became best-sellers ("my potboilers") in the 1920s and 1930s. He was also a regular contributor to the

Over seventy percent of the earth's surface is covered by oceans, only a fraction of which has ever been explored. William Beebe was one of this century's leading pioneers into the oceanic world. The Brooklyn, New York, native possessed an unrelenting curiosity about the natural world around, and beneath, him. Through his dozens of books describing his various expeditions, Beebe brought the average citizen in closer touch with the natural world.
Beebe's interest in ornithology took him to the far reaches of Mexico, Asia, and the Galapagos Islands, and deep into the jungles of South America. In 1919 he was named director of tropical research for the New York Zoological Society. His many exotic expeditions yielded an impressive collection of rare birds for the Society's zoological gardens. In 1930 when he began his historic undersea adventures, the 51-year-old Beebe had already established himself as a scientist of international renown. Little did he know that his greatest contributions were still to come.
Beebe chose as a diving spot an area 10 miles off Nonsuch, a tiny island off of the coast of Bermuda. In June 1930, the bathysphere, along with Beebe, Barton, and a team of 26 assistants was floated out on a huge barge. Connecting the bathysphere to the barge was a 3,500-foot steel cable, almost an inch thick. A solid rubber hose, carrying telephone wires and electricity for lights, provided those within the bathysphere their only contact with the outside world. Once inside the sphere, Beebe remarked upon the tight quarters it provided: "The longer we were in it, the smaller it seemed to get."

Ocean Planet: Writings and Images of the Sea
    A Dark and Luminous Blue
William Beebe - Half Mile Down, 1934
We have seen the Titanic lying in her grave more than 12,000 feet beneath the surface of the North Atlantic; we have seen the crabs and tube worms and other unlikely creatures that inhabit cracks in the sea floor far beyond the reach of light; we have even seen the Challenger Deep, the most remote of all the places on earth. Submersibles, robots, and video cameras have routinely given us access to the most exotic spots in the sea. But what was it like to be the first humans to venture into the deep? In 1934, William Beebe, a naturalist, and Otis Barton, an engineer, climbed into a crude steel ball called the bathysphere and descended half a mile into the unknown darkness off Bermuda. During the dives, Beebe communicated with his colleague, Miss Hollister, who was on the surface, via telephone. At 600 feet the color appeared to be a dark, luminous blue, and this contradiction of terms shows the difficulty of description. As in former dives, it seemed bright, but was so lacking in actual power that it was useless for reading and writing. . . . There are certain nodes of emotion in a descent such as this, the first of which is the initial flash. This came at 670 feet, and it seemed to close a door upon the upper world. Green, the world-wide color of plants, had long since disappeared from our new cosmos, just as the last plants of the sea themselves had been left behind far over head.
