Bennett was born in a modest house in Hanley in the Potteries district of Staffordshire . Hanley is one of a conurbation of six towns which joined together at the beginning of the twentieth century as Stoke-on-Trent . Enoch Bennett, his father, qualified as a solicitor in 1876, and the family were able to move to a larger house between Hanley and Burslem The younger Bennett was educated locally in Newcastle-under-Lyme Arnold was employed by his father - his duties included rent collecting. He was unhappy working for his father for little financial reward, and the theme of parental miserliness is important in his novels. In his spare time he was able to do a little journalism, but his breakthrough as a writer was to come after he had moved from his native Potteries. At the age of twenty-one, he left his father's practice and went to London as a solicitor's clerk.

Arnold Bennett
Arnold Bennett was a successful English playwright, novelist and journalist. Being influenced by the French novelist, Émile Zola (1840-1902), like his friends, H. G. Wells and John Galsworthy , Bennett was styled as a "naturalistic novelist" (persons are creatures of their own environment). These writers were attacked by the "modernists," like Virginia Woolf . In 1903, Bennett moved to Paris (married a Frenchwoman) and lived there for some years. I have put up, here at www.blupete.com, two short pieces which Bennett wrote: " Artists and Critics " and " Unclean Books

Introduction
Harris and Bennett moved in similar literary circles but did not actually meet until the relatively late date of 1908, after Harris had written a letter to 'Jacob Tonson' - Bennett's pseudonym for his literary criticism in the New Age . Their friendship would not last long, but for a time they had a deep mutual admiration. Sources for this page are, predominantly, Frank Harris to Arnold Bennett (1936), a privately-printed pamphlet, which reproduces 58 letters from Harris to Bennett, and Letters of Arnold Bennett, Vol II (1968), which includes 6 letters from Bennett to Harris, as well as several letters to others in which Harris is mentioned.
The Beginning
Arnold Bennett, under his pseudonym of 'Jacob Tonson' had been writing glowing reviews of Harris' work [ ] in the New Age . (The original Tonson was an eighteenth century publisher of - amongst others - Dryden's poetry and the first edition of Paradise Lost ). Harris wrote to 'Tonson' about

BENNETT, Arnold. The City of Pleasure. (AMUSEMENT PARK FICTION) New York: George H. Doran. (1907). First Edition. Scarce amusement park themed novel of a man whose true identity was hidden even from himself. The work seems to contain elements of intrigue and crime but is not found in Hubin. The dustjacket copy reads: "The City of Pleasure, the mammoth amusement park in which unwieldy Mr. Joseph Ilam ruled, was the scene of an amazing conspiracy against the life and peace of a number of citizens, worked out in dramatic action". Very Good, lacking front free endpaper, some splitting and closed tears at top spine end of the fragile original boards in original printed dustjacket, Good to Very Good, with some mild darkening to white panels, top spine end chipped about an inch deep obscuring most of the title. Extremely scarce in original dustjacket.

12. Arnold Bennett - Son Of Stoke-on-Trent
Biography and bibliography of the English writer.

Arnold Bennett - Son of Stoke-on-Trent Bennett, (Enoch) Arnold
Arnold Bennett was an English novelist, playwright, and essayist, born in Hanley (27th May 1867), Stoke-on-Trent , Staffordshire (Hanley was the real-life model for one of the "Five Towns" of his novels). After a local education Bennett finished his education at the University of London and for a time was editor of Woman magazine. After 1900 he devoted himself entirely to writing; dramatic criticism was one of his foremost interests. Bennett is best known, however, for his novels, several of which were written during his residence in France. Bennett's infancy was spent in genteel poverty, which gave way to prosperity as his father succeeded as a solicitor. From this provincial background he became a novelist. His enduring fame is as a Chronicler of the Potteries towns, the setting and inspiration of some of his most famous and enduring literary work and the place where he grew up. Many of the locations in Clayhanger and other Bennett novels are based in "The five towns" and correspond to actual locations in and around the Potteries district of North Staffordshire

Arnold Bennett Anna Of the Five Towns - July 2000 Synopsis The Five Towns Arnold Bennett Anna of the Five Towns
Set in the potteries, and filled with Bennett's characteristic detail - the prayer meetings, rent collecting Sunday school and dark interiors. It shows a community as gossipy, myopic and savage in its condemnations as any in late Victorian England.
'The worst tyrannies of her father never dulled the sense of her duty to him; without perhaps being aware of it, she had rather despised love.'
Brought up in the stern tradition of Methodism by her miserly father, Ephraim Tellwright, Anna never dreams of escaping the narrow confines of her world. On coming of age she inherits a fortune, and when later she becomes engaged to the pious and successful Henry Mynors, Anna feels she has found happiness. But when Ephraim drives a local business man to suicide, Anna is thrown into misery and confusion by her desire to protect his son, Willie. In a moment of great courage she risks her engagement and her father's wrath with a defiant act . . .
One of Arnold Bennett's finest novels, Anna of the Five Towns is at once a brilliantly detailed picture of life in the Potteries, and a tightly knit story of the destructive forces of evangelism and industrial expansion in a small community.
