  • ASIN: Book Description This edition combines 77 Dream Songs, awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1965, and His Toy, His Dream, His Rest, which won the National Book Award for Poetry in 1969. It contains 385 songs, an index of first lines, an index of titles, and a note by the author.
In his essay on the work, Denis Donoghue says: "John Berryman has now completed the long poem, The Dream Songs, begun in 1955 . . . The poet resolved it [the problem of a long poem] in his own way; not Eliot's way in Four Quartets, Williams's way in Paterson, Pound's way in the Cantos, or Hart Crane's way in The Bridge . . . Mr. Berryman's answer was to conceive a diary, a dream diary."
"A major achievement," writes A. Alvarez in The Observer. "He has written an elegy on his brilliant generation and, in the process, he has also written an elegy on himself."

On this day in 1972 the American poet John Berryman committed suicide at the age of fifty-seven. His 77 Dream Songs won the 1964 Pulitzer, and the writing of some 300 more over the subsequent years earned Berryman international fame, but his personal problems kept pace; by the end, his hopes for religion, writing, teaching, marriage and change all seemed out of reach. Biography
American writer, a Regents Professor at the University of Minnesota. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1965 for his "77 Dream Songs" and the National Book Award in 1969 for "History, His Dream, His Rest." A brilliant teacher, when sober, and outwardly humdrum, he was a professor all of his life. He upheld the myth of the artist fornicating, drinking and roaring toward self destruction in a descent into madness. He was fired from the University of Iowa for screaming drunken obscenities and defecating on his landlord's porch. Inwardly, he suffered from the tortures of whatever damnation it was that drove him. His "dream songs" began as an effort in self-analysis, centered mostly on his dad's suicide when he was 12 and his subsequent love-hate feeling toward his mom. He had psychotic nightmares, hallucinations and suffered from manic-depression as early as the age of 20. On 1/07/1972, about 9:00 AM CST, he committed suicide by jumping off a bridge into the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, MN.
