Of particular significance is when Berton smashes Canada's storm trooper image in the second world war, that it had acquired in WWI. He effectively discredits both the armed forces and political leadership during WWII, revealling Mackenzie King's once revered "Not necessarily conscription but conscription if necessary" stance as what it truly was, political indecision that resulted in the needless loss of soldier's lives. The book starts and ends slowly, with the chapters on the Boer and Korean wars not being as compelling. Overall, the book is very informative read. It loses a star in that it is not as entertaining or as smooth flowing as some of Berton's previous works, particular his two on the War of 1812 and the Arctic Grail

    Pierre Berton: Canadian
He used to say he had 200,000 words a year in him, which he said were enough for either a daily column or another thick Berton book. By the age of 84, he had written 50 books before announcing his retirement. He was a star of Canadian radio and television, a household name, a man who once was quoted as saying a Canadian is "somebody who knows how to make love in a canoe."
    COMMENTS E-mail us your thoughts.
"The nation is bound together by its creative artists," Berton wrote in the Globe and Mail in 1999, "and not by parallel lines of rusting steel."
His books, 30-plus literary awards, a dozen honorary degrees, appointment as a companion of the Order of Canada in 1986, and umpteen Canadian television appearances, make him a true national icon.

Youthful Offenders Find the Courage to Apologize
It's not often that Dawson's town council is treated to the sound of someone attending in order to make a apology, but that's what happened on October 19, when two of the four offenders involved in a spree of community vandalism last August appeared in public. The newly reactivated DCTV video coverage of Dawson's council meetings was rolling as Darren Bullen and Shawn Blais read their statements to members of council. On August 19, they, along with Andrew Sprokkreeff and Curtis Smoler, were responsible for vandalizing the Front Street Gazebo, the Commissioner's Residence, the Victory Garden, and the Museum. The latter youths have since moved from Dawson.

Beginning 12 days of Centennial Celebrations
    by Dan Davidson
    Sun Staff
The 12 days of celebrations commemorating what MC Peter Menzies called "the most famous gold rush on the planet" got off to a drizzly start on the evening of August 13, with opening ceremonies outside the Klondyke Centennial Centre and an art show at the Palace Grand Theatre. The usual three day event has been stretched to almost two weeks in honour of the centennial and to tie into the World Goldpanning Championships, which will take place here just over a week from now. Mayor Art Webster assured the crowd that there would be something for everyone, including better weather as the week wears on. "I see from the number of unfamiliar faces that there are a few tourists here today, and I'm really pleased to see that, but what it means is that you're going to have to change your travel arrangements and make sure you stay here for the next twelve days, and in return we'll promise you some sunshine." Regional Director Linda Johnston brought greetings from the Department of Canadian Heritage. Reflecting on the cooperation that was needed for survival in the early days here, she noted that, while life was not so harsh now, "the success of any major undertaking clearly requires cooperation, dedication and the pooling of many varied and valuable resources. Canadian HeritageParks Canadais proud to be a significant partner in these celebrations."
