Annotated Bibliography: Page 2 Annotated Bibliography Berton, Pierre. Why We Act Like Canadians: A Personal Exploration of Our National Character . Toronto: McClelland and Stewart, 1982/Penguin Books 1987. This book consists of a series of letters written by the historian and writer, Pierre Berton, to an imaginary American friend. The letters explain why and how Canadians are different from Americans, and what makes Canada a distinct and unique country, with its own character and values. Berton suggests that, compared to the United States, Canada has emphasized such values as trust, peace and order, and a willingness to give up some measure of personal freedom for the sake of the common good. He also explains how and why Canada came to accept and value cultural diversity, so that Canada is best seen as a mosaic and not a melting-pot as in the United States. Berton pays special attention to the influence of Canada's history and geography. Clark, Joe. A Nation Too Good to Lose: Renewing the Purpose of Canada . Toronto: Key Porter Books, 1994. | |
