    Ambrose Bierce
Ambrose Bierce was born in Meigs County, Ohio, the tenth of thirteen children of Marcus and Laura Bierce. Each of the children was given a name beginning with the letter "A." Bierce grew up on a farm in northern Indiana. After studying a year in a high school Bierce became a printer's apprentice on The Northern Indianan , an antislavery paper, at the age of fifteen. After a term at a military school, he worked in a combination store and café. In 1861, he enlisted in the army and served as an officer in the Union Army until 1865 - an experience that was crucial for his life and career as a writer. Bierce was a topographical officer on General William B. Hazen's staff. He fought in several battles including the one that later provided the setting for 'Chickamauga' (1889), one of his best stories. At Kenesaw Mountain, Bierce was wounded in the temple and the bullet lodged within his skull behind his left ear. After the war Bierce settled in San Francisco. He found employment as a watchman at the U.S. Sub-Treasury and began his journalistic career. Bierce contributed to a number of periodicals, including the

    Amborse Bierce

"Death is not the end," wrote Ambrose Bierce, "there remains litigation over the estate." "Bitter Bierce," as he was often called, was an unapologetic misanthrope who loathed humanity and took pleasure in deflating every inspiring myth or optimistic sentiment with a sharp comment. After serving in the Civil War and seeing up close the depths to which man could sink he became a journalist in San Francisco infamous for cutting one-liners and put-downs. In October 1913, at the age of seventy-one, Bierce decided to quit the United States and observe the Pancho Villa revolution in Mexico. Before leaving, he wrote the following letter to his niece Lora ("Carlt" is her husband, Carlton.)
    Ambrose Bierce Bids Farewell
    to his Niece Lora
"Civilization be dinged! It is the mountains and the desert for me."
Dear Lora, I go away tomorrow for a long time, so this is only to say good-bye. I think there is nothing else worth saying; therefore you will naturally expect a long letter. What an intolerable world this would be if we said nothing but what is worth saying! And did nothing foolish like going into Mexico and South America.

Ambrose Bierce [pseudonym Grile Dod] (1842-c1914) , American journalist and author wrote The Devil’s Dictionary DICTIONARY , n. A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic. This dictionary, however, is a most useful work. Started as weekly installments in one of his newspaper columns in 1881, many of Bierce’s definitions were soon popularised in everyday use. The Devil's Dictionary was originally titled The Cynic’s Word Book CYNIC , n. A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be. First finding his voice in newspapers, Bierce became a prolific author of short stories often humorous and sometimes bitter or macabre. He spoke out against oppression and supported civil and religious freedoms. He also wrote numerous Civil War stories from first-hand experience. Many of his works are ranked among other esteemed American authors’ like Edgar Allen Poe, Stephen Crane , and Mark Twain . Many of his oft-quoted works are in print today and have inspired television and feature film adaptations. BIRTH , n.

Ambrose Bierce, "the Old Gringo": Fact, Fiction and Fantasy Glenn Willeford MISDEMEANOR, n. An infraction of the law having less dignity than a felony and constituting no claim to admittance into the best criminal society. Ambrose Bierce, The Devil’s Dictionary War is fertile ground for the creative mind. In 1913 a writer who had experienced the American Civil War came to Chihuahua in order to see more bloodshed, this time in the Mexican Revolution. The two conflicts were similar in nature. Had Ambrose Bierce survived his visit to Mexico he would, no doubt, have written some gripping literature about Mexican warfare. But he did not survive, and his literary legacy does not extend beyond his retirement from journalism in 1913. Who was Bierce, and what brought him from the safety of a comfortable retirement to the battlefields of the Mexican desert? To answer the question, one must understand what events made the man, especially his service as a soldier. Like the Mexican revolution, the American Civil War was a conflict between paisanos It is therefore interesting that Bierce, who was 71 years old at the time, came to Chihuahua in order to observe the Mexican Revolution. In fact, he seems never to have left! And therein lies one of the most intriguing as well as unsolved mysteries, that remains from that difficult period of history.
