Description
Science Fiction. Southern California sunny days, blue skies, neighbors on flying bicycles ... ghostly submarines ... mermen off the Catalina coast ... and a vast underground sea stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Inland Empire where Chinese junks ply an illicit trade and enormous creatures from ages past still survive. It is a place of wonder ... and dark conspiracies. A place rife with adventure - if one knows where to look for it. Two such seekers are the teenagers Jim Hastings and his friend, Giles Peach. Giles was born with a wonderful set of gills along his neck and insatiable appetite for reading. Drawing inspiration from the novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Giles is determined to build a Digging Leviathan. Will he reach the center of the earth? or destroy it in the process?

Whimsy This is a good book for those it was written for, the admirers of the whimsical. I am not, I prefer picaresque. If you don't know the difference don't buy.

A review by Rodger Turner
Advertisement First things first. James Blaylock is one of my two favourite writers. If publishers do for him what they have done for J. R. R. Tolkien, I'll buy it, I'll read it and I'll probably swoon with enjoyment. Maybe I wouldn't swoon over his character lists or idea tags or his maps. Probably I'll just smirk or giggle. But I'll swoon over his use of words, his mix of character mannerisms and maybe even his Ashbless poetry (my friend Charles would blanch at that admission). Fifteen years earlier, a surfer by the name of Dave Quinn was about to leave the beach after a day on his board. He noticed two girls, twins he thought, playing in the surf. He knew the tides were up and it wouldn't take much for them to be drawn into the undertow. The further they moved away from their mother, the more anxious Dave became. He took off after them when both girls were swept away. One, Anne, he was able to toss back onto the beach but the other, Elinor, was being pulled out to sea. He managed to grab her but they were both pulled out beyond the breakers. Losing body heat and wearying from trying to keep the girl afloat, Dave's brain flashes on a scene where she disappears from his arms just as a wave drags her away. Distraught, he leaves the beach without meeting the family.

Book Review James P. Blaylock has been publishing singular, literate, evocative stories since 1977, but Thirteen Phantasms and Other Stories appears to be his first (and a complete) collection. Its 16 stories have little concern for genre; Blaylock slides from the fantastic to subtle horror to slipstream, sometimes in the same story. His introduction, with its mentions of an antique shop of mysterious orientalia and of aquaria stocked with obscure oddities, perfectly prefigures the concerns of his stories. The past is sometimes the setting, and it often haunts or drives the characters. But this is no simple nostalgia; Blaylock knows the past, irrecoverable yet inescapable, can be a burden and a trap. Mysteries, too, compel or lure many characters, with their strangeness and shadows and dangers. And some characters pursueor are... The Devils in the Details James P. Blaylock

Jim Blaylock’s credentials and achievements are almost too many to list! He is the author of nearly twenty published novels and numerous shorter works. His 1978 story ‘ The Ape-Box Affair ’ is acknowledged as the first Steampunk story and the many further adventures of his much loved character Langdon St. Ives, in both shorter and longer forms (notably in the Philip K. Dick Award winning novel HOMUNCULUS and LORD KELVIN’S MACHINE ) have made him the central figure in the original Steampunk triptych alongside Tim Powers (also represented by Zeno in the UK ) and K.W. Jeter. He continues to collaborate with Powers, maintaining a partnership that has lasted since the two met in college back in the mid-70s and one only occasionally hampered by the interference of William Ashbless. Blaylock has received multiple nominations for the World Fantasy Award , winning it on two occasions – for short stories ‘ Paper Dragons ‘ and his collection ‘ Thirteen Phantasms ‘. Other novels include
