    6. Robert Bloch On Poe And Lovecraft
The author s comparison two American authors of supernatural horror and fantasy.

    Poe
    Lovecraft by
    Robert Bloch
[Reprinted from Ambrosia No. 2 (Aug. 1973)]
Comparisons between Edgar Allan Poe and Howard Phillips Lovecraft are, I suppose, inevitable; seemingly, in recent years [writing in 1973] they are also interminable.
I shall not, therefore, repeat the usual recital of similarities to be found within their work there will be no mention of black cats, revenants , or Antarctic settings per se
But at the same time I have no intention of making a calculated bid for attention by deliberately asserting, as some have also declared, that no real resemblance exists aside from superficial employment of stock characters and themes common to virtually all stories in the genre
To me, this is an untenable statement: Lovecraft, like every writer of fantasy and horror fiction subsequent to Poe, was necessarily influenced by the work of his predecessor and to certain extent his work needs must be derivative in some slight sense. Actually, Lovecraft's homage to Poe in his essay Supernatural Horror In Literature , indicates a degree of appreciation and admiration which leaves no doubt as to the profound impression made upon him by the earlier master.

Robert Bloch (1917-1994) - also wrote as Collier Young American crime and suspense writer who acquired fame with his portrayals of psychopaths. Robert Bloch's writing career spanned seven decades of the 20th century. Bloch's best known character is Norman Bates from PSYCHO (1959), a novel which impact is deeply connected to Alfred Hitchcock's famous film version from 1960. "I discovered, much to my surprise - and particularly if I was writing in the first person - that I could become a psychopath quite easily. I could think like one and I could devise a manner of unfortunate occurrences. So I probably gave up a flourishing, lucrative career as a mass murderer." (from Faces of Fear by Douglas E. Winter, 1990) Robert Bloch was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Raphael Bloch, a bank teller, and Stella Loeb, a schoolteacher and and social worker. Bloch's parents were of German-Jewish descent, but did not practice Judaism. In 1923 the family moved to Maywood and then to Milwaukee. At the age of nine, Block saw his first horror movie, The Phantom of the Opera , starring Lon Chaney, and slept afterwards for a long time with the light on.

Welcome to the first website to deal exclusively with the life and works of Robert Bloch. Robert Bloch wrote more than 200 stories (mostly fantasy, horror, and science fiction, but also mystery and crime), as well as 22 novels and a large number of non-fiction articles. He was also very active in Hollywood, penning a large number of teleplays and screenplays. He is best known to the general public for his novel "Psycho," which became the basis for Alfred Hitchcock's film of the same name . Bloch is regarded as one of the seminal authors of twentieth century fantastic literature, a successor to Poe and Lovecraft (by way of James M. Cain), but with a voice entirely his own. While comfortable with writing about the exploits of ghouls, serial killers, and monsters of all varieties, Bloch was also one of the most pleasant and generous members of the writing community. A fan himself, he always replied to the letters of his fans, answering their questions and encouraging their talents. This site is designed to give the both the casual reader and the scholar of fantastic literature a general introduction to Robert Bloch and his works. The goals of this site are to encourage the reading and the study of the works of Robert Bloch, and to get Bloch's works back in print (and keep them there).

A Brief Tribute To 'the Author Of Psycho'
    by Leigh Blackmore
    Appeared in Tabula Rasa#5
Robert Bloch once dedicated a book to close friend and fellow writer Fritz Leiber with the words "When he writes of graves, they always yawn but his readers never do". The same could be said of Bloch himself. I never had the good fortune to meet Robert Bloch in person. Much to my regret, I missed Cinecon, the Australian convention at which he was Guest of Honour in 1981. When I visited the US in 1990 for the Lovecraft Centennial Conference, I had hoped Bloch would be present, but on writing to him he advised he had just attended a Lovecraft-related convention elsewhere and would not be going to Providence. Plans to meet up with him in his home-town of Los Angeles on the return leg of my trip also didn't work out, due to other commitments which took him out of town at the only time I could be there. While I couldn't meet him in person, at the John Hay Library in Providence I was delighted to see for the first time a display of some of Bloch's original art, executed when he was about 16 in homage to the stories and characters of H.P Lovecraft. Bloch began by wanting to be an artist, only turning to fiction when Lovecraft encouraged him to do so.

    Description
Best known as the author of "Psycho", Robert Bloch is world-renowned for his stories of horror, mystery, fantasy, and science fiction. Many of the 25 stories in this first volume of "The Complete Stories of Robert Bloch" have been unavailable for decades. The stories are in his classic style of gripping suspense, science fiction and fantasy. As Bloch writes, "These stories in this collection have a common theme; they deal with monsters. Some of the monsters are human, some are not but all of them embody, in one way or another, the fears common to us in our dreams. We call these monsters by many names ghosts, vampires, extraterrestrials, changelings. But we recognize them for what they are; manifestations of the secret dreads and desires which lurk beneath the surface of consciousness."
