Students will understand the similarities and differences between the Australian environment and the local city environment. Background Information Official name: Commonwealth of Australia. Form of government: Chief of state: British Monarch represented by Governor-General. Head of government: Prime Minister. Capital: Canberra. Official language: English. Official religion: none. Monetary unit: Favorite song: Waltzing Matilda Australian Land: Australia is the smallest, flattest, and driest inhabited continent in the world. It is the only country which is a whole continent. Six states and two territories make up the land of Australia. (These include: Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Western Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Northern Territory, and Australian Capital Territory.) The most populated cities of Australia are Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, and Perth. Over 86% of the people live in these cities. Australians refer to their land in three ways. "The Country" is the area immediately outside the city and usually includes the surrounding smaller towns and farms. Most of "the country" is a stretch of land about 200 kilometers deep around the eastern and southern seaboards of Australia. "The City" is considered the densely populated city and its surrounding suburbs. The largest cities in Australia are within driving distance of the coast, and many are right on the coast. "The Outback" is the sparsely populated, dry interior of Australia. The Australian outback is both harsh and beautiful. It is like no other place on earth.

28. War In The Sahara, Bogart-Style
Veteran journalist Kenneth Koyen s reminiscence of his experiences with Humphrey Bogart.
http://www.evesmag.com/bogart.htm
War in the Sahara, Bogart-Style By Kenneth Koyen Fourth Armored Division officers and members of the Hollywood crew, in the Mojave Desert in 1943, for the shooting of the wartime movie, "Sahara." Humphrey Bogart kneels at left. Standing behind him at far left is Armored Force Second Lieutenant (later Captain) Kenneth Koyen. By Kenneth Koyen Humphrey Bogart and I shared experiences in desert tank warfare during World War II. It was early 1943 and American soldiers were fighting German General Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Korps in the Sahara Desert of North Africa. Bogie and I were in a desert alright, the Mojave of Southern California. I was there with more than a hundred other men of the Fourth Armored Division of the U.S. Army’s Armored Force. Bogart was there to play the role of Sergeant Joe Gunn, a tough American tank commander in the fighting in North Africa. The War Department and the Army had given their consent and their blessing to the making of the wartime movie. It was to be a film that would, of course, celebrate an American triumph, however small, over the Nazis. My division was undergoing arduous exercises in tank warfare in the Army’s vast California Desert Training Center. We were ordered to supply troops to serve as extras for the movie. We know nothing of the film or its cast. My outfit was "C" Company of the 84th Reconnaissance Battalion (later redesignated "C" Troop of the 25th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Mechanized). We set out from our maneuver area near Needles, California.

Regardless of how many owners there have been or ever will be, Santana will always be known as "Bogie's" boat. In Stephen Bogart’s book, "In Search Of My Father," he writes, "While most people know that Bogie and Bacall had a great love affair, probably fewer know about my father’s other great love affair. It was with sailing. Specifically, it was with the Santana , a fifty-five-foot sailing yacht, which he had bought from Dick Powell and June Allyson. My father was not simply some movie star throwing money into a hole in the water. He was very serious about the boat and he was an excellent helmsman who earned the respect of the sailing fraternity, despite some well-entrenched prejudices they had about actors with boats. The sea was my father’s sanity. My father once answered a question about his devotion to sailing this way: "An actor needs something to stabilize his personality, something to nail down what he really is, not what he is currently pretending to be."
Bogart learned to sail as a child and once he had the good fortune to own his own boat he did it as often as possible. He sailed

1899-1957. Humphrey Bogart, one of the screen's most enduring legends, made
his film debut in 1930. It wasn't until 1936, though, that Bogart broke through as a
major film star when he landed a plumb role in THE PETRIFIED FORREST
(over fellow tough guy Edward G. Robinson). Under contract to Warner Bros.,
Bogart specialized in playing gangsters and played them so well he got fan letters from men in prison who believed he was a real-life tough guy—a far cry from the real Bogart, a sophisticated Manhattanite who planned to study medicine at Yale. THE AFRICAN QUEEN (1951).

And most of you have done so for one reason: Admiration of the all-time greatest actor, Humphrey Bogart. Bogie has been my favorite actor since I-don't-know-when (and Casablanca has always been my favorite movie), and when I first started learning how to design web sites in September, 1995, I was shocked, shocked when numerous search engines failed to turn up a single page devoted to him. Therefore, I decided to rectify that oversight myself. You'll notice, if you haven't already, that I've kept this site almost entirely black and white (except in those cases where color is not only appropriate but necessary), which I hope you'll agree helps set the proper film noir tone. In this spirit, I've made my links appear in black text, changing to grey after they're followed. It makes them a bit difficult to see, but I think you'll agree it's the right way to go.
