Boswell is best known for his massive biography of Samuel Johnson . Although Boswell was not the first biographer in the English language, he is almost certainly the first modern biographer. His Life of Samuel Johnson is itself a literary masterwork. Indeed, some critics contest that much of Johnson's fame rests not so much on the quality of his own writings as on the writings of James Boswell. Prior to Boswell, the biographical form had been reserved for dry, scholarly works that reiterated facts and dates in an accurate but uninteresting manner. Boswell's Life of Johnson revolutionized this form by adding an entirely novel and charming personal flair; Boswell wrote about Johnson as if he were someone the reader might intimately know. He incorporated casual conversations between Johnson and himself into the text of his biography, and his ability to interweave personal anecdotes with factual information was so deft that the line between literary narrative and biographical scholarship was entirely blurred. The result of Boswell's Life of Johnson was so successful that it is still considered by many to be the finest biography ever written, securing Johnson's (and Boswell's) place at the focal point of eighteenth-century English literature.

James Boswell first made himself known as a writer through political essays and travel accounts, but he gained lasting literary fame as the biographer of Dr. Johnson, Samuel . Boswell was born into a wealthy family in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, a judge who served in Scotland’s highest courts, had his son privately tutored and sent him to an exclusive academy during his early years, an education that reinforced the boy’s shy and retiring character. Young Boswell entered the University of Edinburgh in 1753, where he began his law studies. He was not an outstanding student, but University life allowed Boswell to expand his social horizons. Boswell did not seriously consider a literary life until his later years at Edinburgh, in which he began scribbling a few verses and letters for publication in the The Scots Magazine . In 1761, after a year of living a rather rakish life in London, he published an Ode to Tragedy ; a year later, he published several pieces of comic verse in a collection entitled

Boswell, James
Life of Johnson and London.
Johnson died on Dec. 13, 1784. Boswell decided to take his time in writing the Life but to publish his journal of the Hebridean tour as a first installment. In the spring of 1785 he went to London to prepare the work for the press. The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides, with Samuel Johnson, LL.D. (1785) tops all the others published later. It comes from the soundest and happiest period of Boswell's life, the narrative of the tour is interesting in itself, and it provides us with 101 consecutive days with Johnson. The book was a best-seller, but it provoked the scornful charge of personal fatuity that has dogged Boswell's name ever since. His intelligence was not really in question. But he deliberately defied the basic literary rule that no author who wishes respect as a man may publish his own follies without suggesting compensatory strengths of character. Boswell analyzed and recorded his own vanity and weakness with the objectivity of a historian, and in his Johnsonian scenes he ruthlessly subordinated his own personality, reporting the blows that Johnson occasionally gave him without constantly reassuring the reader that he understood the implications of what he had written. In 1786 Boswell was called to the English bar from the Inner Temple and moved his family to London. Thereafter he had almost no legal practice. His principal business was the writing of the

BOSWELL, JAMES (1740-1795). —Biographer, s. of Alexander B. of Auchinleck, Ayrshire, one of the judges of the Supreme Courts of Scotland, was ed. at the High School and Univ. of Edin., and practiced as an advocate. He traveled much on the Continent and visited Corsica, where he became acquainted with the patriot General Paoli. Fortunately for posterity he was in 1763 introduced to Dr. Johnson, and formed an acquaintance with him which soon ripened into friendship, and had as its ultimate fruit the immortal Life . He was also the author of several works of more or less interest, including an Account of Corsica (1768), and Journal of Tour to the Hebrides (in the company of Johnson) (1786). Vain and foolish in an exceptional degree, and by no means free from more serious faults, B. has yet produced the greatest biography in the language. The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. appeared in 1791, and at once commanded an admiration which has suffered no diminution since. But by this time a cloud had fallen upon the author. He had lost his excellent wife, his health had given way, the intemperance to which he had always been subject had mastered him, and he d.

Boswell, James
(b. Oct. 29, 1740, Edinburgh, Scot.d. May 19, 1795, London, Eng.), friend and biographer of Samuel Johnson Life of Johnson, 2 vol., 1791). The 20th-century publication of his journals proved him to be also one of the world's greatest diarists
Edinburgh and London.
Boswell's father, Alexander Boswell, advocate and laird of Auchinleck in Ayrshire from 1749, was raised to the bench with the judicial title of Lord Auchinleck in 1754. The Boswells were an old and well-connected family, and James was subjected to the strong pressure of an ambitious family. Boswell hated the select day school to which he was sent at the age of 5, and from 8 to 13 he was taught at home by tutors. From 1753 to 1758 he went through the arts course at the University of Edinburgh. Returning to the university in 1758 to study law, he became enthralled by the theatre and fell in love with a Roman Catholic actress. Lord Auchinleck thought it prudent to send him to the University of Glasgow, where he attended the lectures of Adam Smith. In the spring of 1760 he ran away to London. He was, he soon found, passionately fond of metropolitan culture, gregarious, high-spirited, sensual, and attractive to women; and London offered just the combination of gross and refined pleasures that seemed to fulfill him. At this time he contracted gonorrhea, an affliction that he was to endure many times in the course of his life. From 1760 to 1762 Boswell studied law at home under strict supervision and sought release from boredom in gallantry, in a waggish society called the Soaping Club, and in scribbling. His publications (mostly in verse) give no indication of conspicuous talent.
