JANE BOWLES: A SHORT BIOGRAPHY
by Millicent Dillon Jane Bowles's total body of work consists of one novel, one play, and six short stories. Yet John Ashbery said of her: "It is to be hoped that she will be recognized for what she is: one of the finest modern writers of fiction in any language." Tennessee Williams called her the most underrated writer of fiction in American literature. During her lifetime and since her death in 1973, she has been considered a writer's writer, little known to the general public but with a loyal following of intensely devoted readers. She was born in New York City on February 22, 1917, the daughter of Sidney Auer and Claire Stajer Auer. Her childhood was spent in Woodmere, Long Island. On her father's death in 1930, Jane and her mother moved back to Manhattan. As an adolescent she developed tuberculosis of the knee. Her mother took her to a sanatorium in Leysin, Switzerland, where she was put in traction for many months. During this time she developed an intense love of literature and an equally intense series of obsessions and fears. Upon her return to New York she began to experiment with writing a novel and with sexual adventures with men and women, though primarily with women. Jane Bowles (center)

Current Issue ... Online Edition: Summer 2002 The Gathering Spirit of Jane Bowles by Jon Carlson Jane Bowles was an American author of surpassing qualities, although her modest oeuvre remains well outside the consciousness of the general reading public, particularly in the United States. Best known for her novel Two Serious Ladies, published in 1943, she also wrote a number of notable short stories, including "Guatemalan Idyll," "A Stick of Green Candy," and "Tea on the Mountain," as well as the play In the Summer House. These were reissued in the collection entitled My Sister's Hand in Mine, which included a laudatory introduction by Truman Capote, who cited her "... subtlest comprehension of eccentricity and human apartness." Other luminaries have praised her writings: Tennessee Williams called her "the most important writer of prose fiction in modern American letters," and John Ashbery found her to be "one of the finest modern writers of fiction in any language." Her work was, in Williams's words, "the heart of her life." And Jane's life-animated and exotic, even quixotic-reached and resonated well beyond perceived limits imposed by borders and conventions. Not incidentally, it presaged by a generation the struggle of Western women towards a less-fettered psychology.

Description
Though she wrote only one novella, one short play, and fewer than a dozen short stories over a roughly twenty-year span from the early 1940s to the mid-1960s, Jane Bowles has long been regarded by critics as one of the premier stylists of her generation. Enlivened at unexpected moments by sexual exploration, mysticism, and flashes of wit alternately dry and hilarious, her prose is spare and honed, her stories filled with subtly sly characterizations of men and, mostly, women, dissatisfied not so much with the downward spiral of their fortunes as with the hollowness of their neat little lives. Whether focused on the separate emergences of Miss Goering and Mrs. Copperfield from their affluent, airless lives in New York and Panama into a less defined but intense sexual and social maelstrom in the novella

THE JANE AND PAUL BOWLES SOCIETY
The Jane and Paul Bowles Society is an independent author society for both Paul Bowles and Jane Bowles, whose members conduct academic, scholarly research on the Bowleses, and present papers and participate in panels at international and American literary conferences. ABOUT THE PAUL AND JANE BOWLES SOCIETY History was made at the American Literature Association's annual conference held from May 30 to June 2, 2002, where The Jane and Paul Bowles Society was formed through the tireless efforts of David Racker of Temple University and co-founder Anne Foltz, Editor of the Society's publication Bowles Notes . Racker organized and recruited presenters for a panel on Paul Bowles entitled "Radical Exploration: Modernism, Domination, and Eroticism in the Work of Paul Bowles." John Hawley of Santa Clara University filled in as Panel Chair for Allen Hibbard who was en route to the Middle East. Panel presentations included Anne Foltz's "Subjected to the Arab Gaze: When the Other is US/Us" and David Racker's "The Awareness of Domination in the Work of Paul Bowles." Following a lively question and answer period, Racker and Foltz met with scholars interested in being part of this ground breaking organization. The principle aim of the Society is to celebrate the work of Jane and Paul Bowles in academic venues. The Society attends the Modern Language Association and American Literature Association annual conferences and presents panels geared toward scholarly investigations of works conceived by Jane and/or Paul Bowles. The Society also provides resources to interested instructors and teachers on how to include the Bowleses' works in university or college classroom settings. The Society's members feel Jane and Paul Bowles both made unique and significant contributions to 20th Century arts and letters, and these contributions deserve to be studied and properly acknowledged.

ber die Jane Bowles-Biographie von Millicent Dillon.
http://www.humanist.de/kultur/literatur/literatur/dillon.html

Bowles, Jane Auer (1917-1973) page: "Plain Pleasures" and "A Stick of Green Candy" feature men as catalysts of destruction. In "Plain Pleasures," the widowed Mrs. Perry agrees to meet her neighbor, Mr. Drake, for dinner but, once seated, she mocks his romanticism and rejects his marriage proposal. She runs upstairs and, sitting in the vacant bedroom, recognizes the essential absurdity of existence. Her rape by the lecherous restaurant owner and the loss of Mr. Drake's friendship cannot diminish her insight. "A Green Stick of Candy" concerns prepubescent Mary, who has her sense of self destroyed when a boy violates her clay pit where she has constructed a world. In this clay pit, she is a general, but she perceives herself as a weaker figure when her father ignores her loss.
