THE JANE AND PAUL BOWLES SOCIETY
The Jane and Paul Bowles Society is an independent author society for both Paul Bowles and Jane Bowles, whose members conduct academic, scholarly research on the Bowleses, and present papers and participate in panels at international and American literary conferences. ABOUT THE PAUL AND JANE BOWLES SOCIETY History was made at the American Literature Association's annual conference held from May 30 to June 2, 2002, where The Jane and Paul Bowles Society was formed through the tireless efforts of David Racker of Temple University and co-founder Anne Foltz, Editor of the Society's publication Bowles Notes . Racker organized and recruited presenters for a panel on Paul Bowles entitled "Radical Exploration: Modernism, Domination, and Eroticism in the Work of Paul Bowles." John Hawley of Santa Clara University filled in as Panel Chair for Allen Hibbard who was en route to the Middle East. Panel presentations included Anne Foltz's "Subjected to the Arab Gaze: When the Other is US/Us" and David Racker's "The Awareness of Domination in the Work of Paul Bowles." Following a lively question and answer period, Racker and Foltz met with scholars interested in being part of this ground breaking organization. The principle aim of the Society is to celebrate the work of Jane and Paul Bowles in academic venues. The Society attends the Modern Language Association and American Literature Association annual conferences and presents panels geared toward scholarly investigations of works conceived by Jane and/or Paul Bowles. The Society also provides resources to interested instructors and teachers on how to include the Bowleses' works in university or college classroom settings. The Society's members feel Jane and Paul Bowles both made unique and significant contributions to 20th Century arts and letters, and these contributions deserve to be studied and properly acknowledged.

Description
The short fiction of American literary cult figure Paul Bowles is marked by a unique, delicately spare style, and a dark, rich, exotic mood, by turns chilling, ironic, and wry—possessing a symmetry between beauty and terror that is haunting and ultimately moral. In "Pastor Dowe at TecatÉ," a Protestant missionary is sent to a faraway place where his God has no power. In "Call at CorazÓn," an American husband abandons his alcoholic wife on their honeymoon in a South American jungle. In "Allal," a boy's drug-induced metamorphosis into a deadly serpent leads to his violent death. Here also are some of Bowles's most famous works, including "The Delicate Prey," a grimly satisfying tale of vengeance, and "A Distant Episode," which Tennessee Williams proclaimed "a masterpiece."

Theroux made his visit in the early 1990s, when Bowles was already aged and infirm, but still receiving visitors in his modest apartment. From his bed (actually a mattress on the floor, surrounded by medicines and papers), Bowles conversed amiably for several hours, and Theroux found him to be fascinating company.

BOWLES, Paul The Sheltering Sky London, Lehmann, (1949). The first edition of Bowles's landmark first novel, about Western youths encountering the unfamiliar, and themselves, in North Africa. One of the seminal novels of the Beat generation and an influential book in the decades since. One critic commented that Bowles was "a master of cruelty and isolation and the ironies of the search for meaning in an inadequately understood environment." Bowles exposed his characters, and by extension his readers, to the alien cultures of the desert and also to the psychotropic drugs prevalent in that part of the world. Printed in an edition of only 4000 copies. This copy has a slight spine slant and foxing to the page edges; near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light edge wear. A nice copy of an important book. All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted. See more items by BOWLES, Paul

Book Review
American novelist and short-story writer, poet, translator, classical music composer, and filmscorer Paul Bowles has lived as an expatriate for more than 40 years in the North African nation of Morocco, a country that reaches into the vast and inhospitable Sahara Desert. The desert is itself a character in The Sheltering Sky , the most famous of Bowles' books, which is about three young Americans of the postwar generation who go on a walkabout into Northern Africa's own arid heart of darkness. In the process, the veneer of their lives is peeled back under the author's psychological inquiry. This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

At its center was the flamboyant literary editor George Davis, who, at loose ends after being sacked by Harper's Bazaar, invited several of his talented New York friends to form an art commune. Sharing a chaotic yet convivial life were poet Auden and his compatriot composer friend Britten, who busied themselves with an opera drawing on their developing experience of American life. Also present was the fragile, sherry-sipping Southerner Carson McCullers, who began her novel The Member of the Wedding at 7 Middagh Street, developed a lesbian crush and split with her failed...
