Z Leigh Brackett Biography Leigh Brackett (December 7, 1915 - March 18, 1978), although best known for her fantasy and science fiction, also wrote mystery novels and Hollywood screenplays, most notably "The Big Sleep" (1945), "Rio Bravo" (1958) and "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) She received the Hugo award posthumously for this in 1981. The last was a departure for Brackett, since until then, all of her science fiction had been in the form of novels and short stories rather than screenplays.
Her first published science fiction story was "Martian Quest", which appeared in the February 1940 issue of Astounding Science Fiction. Her first novel, "No Good from a Corpse", published in 1944, was a hard-boiled mystery novel in the tradition of Raymond Chandler. Hollywood director Howard Hawks was so impressed by this novel that he had his secretary call in "this guy Brackett" to help William Faulkner write the script for "The Big Sleep" (1946). The film, starring Humphrey Bogart and written by Leigh Brackett, William Faulkner, and Jules Furthman, is considered one of the best movies ever made in the genre.
In 1946, Brackett married science fiction author Edmond Hamilton, and may well have had a positive influence on the quality of his own writing. In the same year, Planet Stories published one of Brackett's most influential short stories, "Lorelei of the Red Mists", a collaboration with Ray Bradbury, featuring Eric John Stark, Brackett's hallmark science fiction character.

Leigh (Douglass) Brackett (1915-1978) American writer of crime novels and short stories. Brackett's major work was in the field science and fantasy fiction (over 200 titles). She also wrote screenplays for several highly acclaimed films by Howard Hawks , television scripts for Checkmate and Suspense series, and a play, TERROR AT NORTHFIELD, for the Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Shortly before her death, Brackett scripted THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK for the director and pulp fiction fan George Lucas. "Howard Hawks sits down with you for a series of chats, giving you all his thoughts on what kind of story he wants, how it ought to go, etc., and then retires to Palm Springs and the golf course, leaving you to come up with a script the best way you can." ('From The Big Sleep to The Long Goodbye by Leight Brackett, 1973) Leigh Brackett was born in Los Angeles, California. In her childhood Brackett was a great fan of Robert E. Howard, C.L. Moore and Edgar Rice Burroughs and his John Carter's Martian Stories - these swashbuckling fantasies and space operas are visible also in the short story The Lake of Gone-Forever' (1949): "But it was easy, out of his childhood memories and those strangely incoherent notes, to build a romantic mystery around the lonely prospector's discovery of an unknown world and his subsequent haunted death. Marcia had found it all fascinating and did not doubt for a moment Conway's statement that he was seeking to solve that mystery which, he said, had overshadowed his whole life." Brackett's first short story, 'Martian Quest,' was published in
