Hi, all, and welcome to the Greentown, IL... my page for Ray Bradbury-related news and information. I've always been disappointed by the lack of Ray Bradbury sites out there, so I'm hoping that this one can aspire to something great. Some people might ask what the significance of Greentown, IL is in the title up there. See, in pretty much all of Bradbury's works, the story is set in a small, Midwestern city named Greentown. In reading about it, you sort of get the idea that Greentown is a picturesque, quintessential American Town. "Greentown", however, is not fictional- it is the pseudonym for Ray Bradbury's own home town, Waukegan, Illinois; it shares all the same features he describes: Lake Michigan, the river, the ravine, the trolley. So essentially, you could visit Greentown if you wanted to... Waukegan is a northern suburb of Chicago, just an hour or two north of O'Hare. Anyone want to try? There are a few things I'd like to accomplish on this page... a comprehensive guide to Ray's short stories and books, good information on his hometown of Waukegan, accurate news on Ray's whereabouts and activities, and finally updated news on past and upcoming (yes, upcoming) films based on Ray Bradbury's work. -The Caretaker

BIOGRAPHY
Ray Douglas Bradbury was born in Waukegan, Illinois, on August 22, 1920. He was the third son of Leonard Spaulding Bradbury and Esther Marie Moberg Bradbury. They gave him the middle name "Douglas," after the actor, Douglas Fairbanks.
He never lived up to his namesake's reputation for swashbuckling adventure on the high seas. Instead, Bradbury's great adventures would take place behind a typewriter, in the realm of imagination. Today, as an author, essayist, playwright, screenwriter, lecturer, poet and visionary, Ray Bradbury is known as one of America's greatest creative geniuses.
Bradbury's early childhood in Waukegan was characterized by his loving extended family. These formative years provided the foundations for both the author and his stories. In Bradbury's works of fiction, 1920s Waukegan becomes "Greentown," Illinois. Greentown is a symbol of safety and home, and often provides a contrasting backdrop to tales of fantasy or menace. In Greentown, Bradbury's favorite uncle sprouts wings, traveling carnivals conceal supernatural powers, and his grandparents provide room and board to Charles Dickens.

Ray Bradbury
Negli anni quaranta Bradbury conosce Leigh Brackett, scrittrice di gialli, fantascienza e sceneggiature cinematografiche (ha scritto, per Howard Hawks, il copione di Il grande sonno). A lei Bradbury sottopone i suoi primi racconti "mistery", che, pubblicati su riviste quali "Dime Mysterv Magazine", "Detective Tales" e "New Detective Magazine", verranno a lungo dimenticati e ristampati solo negli anni ottanta. E' negli anni quaranta, su riviste come "Thrilling Wonder Stories" e "Planet Stories", che cominciano ad apparire i coloriti e poetici racconti di fantascienza, fra cui "Il gelo e la fiamma", "Lorelei delle nebbie di porpora" (in collaborazione con Leigh Brackett) e soprattutto "Il picnic d'un milione d'anni", primo mattone delle future Cronache marziane House Dark Carnival ; di li a qualche anno saranno ristampati (ma non tutti) nella nuova antologia Paese d'ottobre (1955). Nel 1950 escono in volume le Crorache marziane Il successo delle Cronache marziane Il gioco dei pianeti, 1951, che ancora attinge al materiale degli anni quaranta ma nella quale nasce il mito dell'Uomo Illustrato;

Biography
American writer of sci-fi and fantasy, one of the best known and admired in the field. His professional debut, in collaboration with H. Hasse, was "The Pendulum," 1941. His first solo publication was "The Piper," 1943, but it could be said that he had "arrived" by 1946. His plots are essentially simple, in which his power of writing sustains complete interest. He won two important literary prizes in 1954, the Grand Master Nebula Award in 1988, the Writer's Guild Award in 1974 and the Silver Award on 1/19/1997. A scriptwriter in Hollywood in the 1970s, he tried his hand as a playwright-producer for a while. By 1997, Bradbury had credits of over 50 books and dozens of short stories, with various films made of his work. Bradbury collects things - books, toys, antiques, auto parts and literally anything that he can get his hands on, all of it going into the bric-a-brac chaos that he calls his office. During lecture tours he has cris-crossed the country by train inasmuch as he never flies, and has never learned to drive a car. Railroad timetables are stacked in his office, suggesting a story to him as does every other item of his odd flea-market of junk. (He declares that he will only ride in a car if he can cower in the back seat.) Perhaps it is his amiable wit as well as his grasp of the fascination of the odd and macabre that makes him so beloved a writer of the genre.
