Introduction (Wait until this page is completely downloaded before clicking.) Clearly Bradbury had a certain vision of the Mars in which these stories are set, a fantasy world based far more on Edgar Rice Burroughs novels ( A Princess of Mars and its many sequels) than on contemporary science. Bradbury returned to this fantasy Mars in other stories not included in this volume ("The Exiles," "The Fire Balloons" and "The Other Foot" in The Illustrated Man, " Night Call, Collect" and "The Lost City of Mars" in I Sing the Body Electric,; and "Dark They Were, and Golden-Eyed" in A Medicine for Melancholy) . To a certain degree, Bradbury is also writing to counteract the image of a menacing Mars as portrayed first in H. G. Well's War of the Worlds. In this work humans from Earth play the role of "invaders from outer space." The Martian Chronicles is best read as a collection of linked short stories rather than as a novel. Although such collections are unusual in "mainstream" fiction they are common in science fiction. Bradbury has always been more of a short story writer than a novelist, and most of the stories can be read separately from their present context. When that fact is realized, some of the inconsistencies and contradictions in

The born story-teller, Ray Bradbury grew up as a science fiction fanatic. He soon found a passion for writing, a daily hobby that he would start age 12 and never stop. By 1992, he had written 28 books, including Fahrenheit 451 The Illustrated Man , and The Martian Chronicles His first book, however, was a collection of short stories called Dark Carnival published in 1949. He was paid a $700 advance, which would cover for his rent for the next two years. Fahrenheit 451 was one of his most famous pieces. Bradbury tells the story in detail his writing process. He paid 10 cents per half hour that he used a UCLA typewriter. All told, he spent $9.80 over the course of eight or nine days to write this book. He explained he was too poor to have an office, and his home office had too many distractions. To hear more about Bradbury, including his take on the movie renditions of his works and his time on the television program, Ray Bradbury Theater, click on the link below. Jump to: navigation search Previous (Ray) Next (Ray Charles) Ray Douglas Bradbury (born August 22, 1920) decided at the age of 12 that he was going to be a writer. He became one of the most honored American authors in the genres of fantasy, horror, science fiction , and mystery. He won almost every major fantasy fiction award in existence, this extensive list includes a Grand Master Nebula Award in 1988. His short stories, novels, and poems are full of thought provoking "what if" ideas that often relate to the extremes of human behavior. He received high acclaim for his short stories titled, The Martian Chronicles, which were later published in novel form in 1950. Bradbury's most powerful and compelling novel is considered to be Fahrenheit 451, which parodies the consequences of a totalitarian government's dictates that the written word must be banned from existence. Many of his stories deal with his interpretations of the social and technological realms of the modern world, and his style is to take his criticisms of these two things and add a touch of fantasy. When people asked about the purpose of his novels, Bradbury responded, "I don't try to describe the future. I try to prevent it." Although Bradbury's writings are full of adventure, intrigue, deception, the fantastic, and often the disturbingly horrific, his personal life was the exact opposite. He lived a quiet, calm, respectful life in Los Angeles with his wife, daughters, and beloved cats for most of his writing career.

31. The Stupid Fan
A personal essay about a young science fiction fan meeting Ray Bradbury, his favorite author, for the first time.

The Stupid Fan
by Galen A. Tripp
I am a science fiction fan. A science fiction fan does more than read the stuff. Becoming a fan sometimes means wanting to meet the people who do the writing. When a fan meets an idolized author, things may not go as one might expect, given the reputation of the author. I came to science fiction soon after I started reading. The second novel I ever read was science fiction: The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. I did not realize that I was a science fiction fan, however, until I was fourteen years old. That year I read many kinds of books. I read Black Like Me , a book about the life of blacks in the south. I read Incident at Exeter , a book about UFOs. I read From the Land of Lost Content , a book about the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959. I read the novel Lost Horizon . I read murder mysteries and books on astronomy and other things as well. This reading was in addition to all that I had to read as a freshman in high school. In my fourteenth year I also read a book that contained a story that changed my life. The book was

ARTICLE If you're looking for a Writer of the Century, Ray Bradbury fits the bill. In fact, he fits it so well that it may be damning him with faint praise. Maybe THE Writer of the Century would be a better title. For one thing, he has been at it for better than half of the century. For another, what he wrote in the first half of the century stands up just as well - maybe even better - in the closing months and days of the second half. And he has influenced just about everyone sitting in front of a keyboard and trying to make a living at it, from people who are household names like King and Crichton, to unfamiliar names like Joe Hartlaub or William D. Plant III who dream one day of seeing their names on the side of some hardcover binding.
