She was both the daughter and the wife of Massachusetts Bay Colony Governors. As an accomplished poet she laid the groundwork for other female writers to emerge in an era when women generally tended to family and domestic matters. Through her poetry she eloquently expressed the concerns of a Puritan wife and mother, giving significant historical insight and perspective on the lives of the early settlers to America . In modern times, she is still regarded as one of the most important American woman poets.

    Bradstreet, Anne,
DUDLEY (b. c. 1612, Northampton, Northamptonshire?, Eng.d. Sept. 16, 1672, Andover, Massachusetts Bay Colony [U.S.]), one of the first poets to write English verse in the American colonies. Long considered primarily of historical interest, she won critical acceptance in the 20th century as a writer of enduring verse, particularly for her sequence of religious poems "Contemplations," written for her family and not published until the mid-19th century. She wrote her poems while rearing eight children, functioning as a hostess, and performing other domestic duties. The Bradstreets moved frequently in the Massachusetts colony, first to Cambridge, then to Ipswich, and then to Andover, which became their permanent home. Bradstreet's brother-in-law, without her knowledge, took her poems to England, where they were published as The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America (1650). The first American edition of The Tenth Muse was published in revised and expanded form as Several Poems Compiled with Great Variety of Wit and Learning Most of the poems in the first edition are long and rather dully imitative works based on the standard poetic conventions of the time, but the last two poems"Of the vanity of all worldly creatures" and "David's Lamentation for Saul and Jonathan"are individual and genuine in their recapitulation of her own feelings.

Mistress Bradstreet zSB(3,3) In Charlotte Gordon's fascinating biography, Mistress Bradstreet , Anne Bradstreet emerges as "an electrifying personality"the first New World poet with her bestselling volume of American poetry. Here, the figure of Anne Bradstreet, the poet, emergesfull of life and passionate intensity. Gordon puts flesh to the legend, helping us to re-imagine the hardships and disappointments Bradstreet must have faced as she strove to fashion an identity for herself as a woman writer in a New World. Life and Death
Anne Bradstreet was 18 when she journeyed to America in search of a new life. Faced with the brutal realities of life in an unforgiving landscape, she joined the other Puritans in their struggle against starvation, illness, isolation, and almost-certain death. She saw the immediate and horrifying realities of natural existence"that it is fleeting"and she eventually found herself on the very edge of their little civilizationalone, despairing, and longing. But, that horrible loneliness did not stop her from becoming America's first major poet. In fact, those abysmal conditions may have given her the inner angst she drew upon to fuel her voice.
