    Sebastian Brant
A German humanist and poet, born at Stasburg in 1457 or 1458; died at the same place, 1521. He attended the University of Basle where he at first studied philosophy , but soon after abandoned this for law , obtaining in 1489 the degree of Doctor of Canon and Civil Law . Prior to this, from 1484, Brant had begun to lecture at the university , practising his profession at the same time. He wrote a number of poems in Latin and German in which he set forth his religious and political ideals. The election of Maximilian as emperor had filled him and many other patriots with high hope . To see the emperor the supreme temporal ruler of Christian nations , and the Church the supreme spiritual ruler on earth was his one great desire and henceforth coloured all his poems. Especially did he hope for the restoration of imperial power in Germany and the strengthening of the realm. But he was doomed to disappointment. In 1499 Basle was separated from the empire and became a member of the Swiss confederacy.

Ship of Fools Dover zSB(3,3) In 1494 a book entitled Ship of Fools was published in Basel. Written by Sebastian Brant, the profound masterpiece was to have an impact on Europe's cultural climate. The book's status as an unprecedented bestseller can be explained when one aligns the author and his intention, the reception of the book, and the consequences of his work. Brant's beginnings are found in Strasbourg, where he was born in 1457. He was raised in a wealthy household and was afforded an education that would eventually permit him to study at the University of Basel. Between 1483 and 1484, Brant received his juristic license, which enabled him to teach canonical and Roman law.
A devout Christian, Brant felt prompted to explore the range of reasons pertaining to mankind's behavior in a fallen world. The causes, so Brant believed, are related to foolishness, whereby foolishness, depending on circumstances, is another word for ungodliness. According to Brant, the effects of this condition promote rebuke from God and from Christians. Brant felt that God endowed mankind with reason, and that the willful apathy toward reason gives rise to lax moral views, which undermine the mission that God asks of mankind: to live in agreement with God's will.

    Brant, Sebastian
(b . 1458?, Strassburg [now Strasbourg, France]d. May 10, 1521, Strassburg), satirical poet best known for his allegory The Ship of Fools , the most famous German literary work of the 15th century. Brant studied in Basel, where he was made doctor of laws (1489) and taught in the law faculty. When Basel joined the Swiss Confederation (1499), he returned to Strassburg, where in 1503 he was made city clerk. Maximilian I appointed him imperial councillor and count palatine. Brant's writings are varied: legal; religious; political (in support of Maximilian, against the French and Turks); and, especially, moral (adaptations of the aphorisms of Cato, Faceto, and Freidank). His chief work, however, is Das Narrenschiff (1494; adapted as The Shyp of Folys of the Worlde, by Alexander Barclay, 1509), an allegory telling of a ship laden with fools and steered by fools setting sail for Narragonia, the "fool's paradise." The ship allegory is not sustained; instead Brant presents more than 100 fools representing every contemporary shortcoming, serious and trivial. Criminals, drunkards, ill-behaved priests and lecherous monks, spendthrifts, bribe-taking judges, busybodies, and voluptuous women are included in this unsparing, bitter, sweeping satire. Brant's aims are the improvement of his fellows and the regeneration of church and empire. The language is popular, the verse rough but vigorous, and each chapter is accompanied by a woodcut, probably by Albrecht

    Sebastian Brant
Brant Sebastian (1458-1521) German satirical poet and humanist. His Ship of Fools (1494), a bitter satire on follies and vices of his time, tells how a ship loaded with fools sails to fool's paradise, Narragonia.
See: Bosch The Ship of Fools is evidently based on the poem. The picture shows two nuns and a monk passing merry time while sailing to Heaven in a company of peasants in a strange boat, which has a May tree (which symbolizes spring folk festivals, a time of moral license for folk and clergy alike) as a mast; banner with a Muslim crescent instead of Christian cross and many other humorous details.
