Bronte, Anne
English writer, sister of Charlotte Bronte and Emily Bronte. Anne Bronte is best-known of her AGNES GREY (1847) and THE TENANT OF WILDFELL HALL (1848), which are generally considered more conservative works than her sisters. The close-knit Bronte family have inspired many studies, in which Charlotte, the oldest child, is characterized as the most ambitious writer, and Emily the greatest genius. Anne has been described mild and the less-talented youngest sister although, but her novels were sharp and ironic. Anne Bronte was born in Thornton, Yorkshire. She was the youngest of six children of Patrick and Maria Bronte, and educated largely at home. After the death of her mother in 1821, and two other children, Maria (d. 1825) and Elizabeth (d. 1825), Anne was left with her sisters and brother to the care of their father. Other members of the family were Elizabeth Branwell, a Calvinist aunt, and the family servant, Tabitha Aycroyd, who knew many folk-tales. The girls most effective education was at the Haworth parsonage, in which Mr. Bronte settled the year before his wife's death. They read the Bible, Homer, Virgil, Shakespeare, Milton, Byron, Scott, and many others, and examined articles from Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Fraser's Magazine, and The Edinburgh Review. In the upstairs of the parsonage, a small house, was two bedrooms and a third room, scarcely bigger than a closet, in which the sisters played their games. The front door opened almost directly on to the churcyard. Inspired by a box of 12 wooden soldiers, the children wove tales and legends associated with remote Africa. With these tales the children broke the monotonous daily routines, like they later poured their joys and disappointment in their novels. Emily and Anne created their own Gondal saga, and Charlotte and Branwell recorded their stories in minute notebooks.

Anne Bronte
Although perhaps not as well known as her sisters, Charlotte and Emily, Anne Bronte was nevertheless a part of the most famous family in English literary history. She was the most conservative writer of the three and was best known for her novels.
Anne Bronte was born in Thornton in Yorkshire, England on January 17 th , 1820. She was one of six children born to Reverend Patrick Bronte and his wife, Maria. The youngest of six children, Anne’s siblings were Maria, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Patrick Branwell and Emily.
Anne’s early childhood was blighted with tragedy. Her mother died of cancer in 1921, the year after Anne’s birth, and two of her sisters, Maria and Elizabeth, died in 1925. The majority of her childhood was in fact spent in the realms of fantasy in order to escape her unhappy childhood.
Anne began writing at an early age. Along with Emily, she created an imaginary world called Gondal. Both sisters wrote stories and poems about this world from childhood and into the 1840s, although few survive.
Anne was largely educated at home. She was too young to accompany her older sisters when they briefly attended school and didn’t actually experience a school environment until 1835. She was fifteen when she enrolled at Roe Head in Dewesbury, where she stayed until 1837.

And carried aloft on the wing of the breeze;
For, above, and around me, the wild wind is roaring
Arousing to rapture the earth and the seas. The long withered grass in the sunshine is glancing
The bare trees are tossing their branches on high;
The dead leaves beneath them are merrily dancing,
The white clouds are scudding across the blue sky. I wish I could see how the ocean is lashing
The foam of its billows to whirlwinds of spray, I wish I could see how its proud waves are dashing And hear the wild roar of their thunder today. BOOKS on-line Library Catalog Gallery Elena and Yacov Feldman document.write("<");document.write("! "); document.write(" ");document.write(">");

Emily and Anne created their own Gondal saga, and Charlotte and Branwell recorded their stories in minute notebooks. In 1839 Anne worked for a short period as a governess to the Inghams at Blake Hall and later in same position to the Robinsons at Thorpe Green Hall near York from 1840 to 1845. Her brother Branwell joined her there as a tutor to Edmund, the only boy in the family, in 1843. He fell unfortunately in love for Mrs Robinson - or some other reason annoyed their employers - and Anne had to leave the work. Thorpe Green appeared later as Horton Lodge in her novel

October 2005 Paperback Tenant of Wildfell Hall Anne Bronte July 1998 Paperback From AudioFile Helen Graham has taken up residence in the bleak Wildfell Hall with her young son to escape her alcoholic and philandering husband. The story is narrated both by Helen and the man who falls in love with her. Frederick Davidson and Nadia May take the roles of the storytellers, and they do an excellent job of portraying both the male and female voices. May reads Helen's diary and correspondence. May's voice is young, fresh and naive, well-suited to Helen as a young woman; the voices of the men are excellent as well. Her laughter sounds genuine, and her portrayal of drunken men is perfect. She moves the narrative along crisply, with just the right touch of drama. Davidson's voicing is also excellent, but he tends to overdramatize at times, and his tempo is just a shade too fast. The choice to use both male and female...
