Branwell Brontë was the fourth of six children and the only son of Patrick Brontë and his wife, Maria Branwell Brontë . He was born in Thornton , near Bradford Yorkshire , and moved with his family to Haworth when his father was appointed to the perpetual curacy in 1821. Of the four Brontë siblings who survived into adulthood, Branwell Brontë seems to have been regarded within the family as the most talented, at least during his childhood and youth. citation needed While four of his five sisters were sent to Cowan Bridge boarding school (resulting in the death of his two oldest sisters, Maria and Elizabeth, from tuberculosis), Branwell was kept at home to be privately educated by his father, who gave him a classical education suitable for admission to

Biography - Branwell Bronte
Branwell Bronte was born on June 26th 1817 at Thornton, Bradford in Yorkshire, fourth child of the six Bronte children. His mother died in 1821. Branwell Bronte received no formal education, partly due to financial restrictions as his father was struggling to keep the family together after his wife's death. Branwell does not appear to have suffered as he was a very capable scholar with an enthusiastic desire to learn. He indulged in the Gondal stories and enjoyed writing with Charlotte. In February 1836 at the age of 19 Branwell was proposed a freemason, and later became secretary of the Lodge. Meetings were held at the Black Bull until 1833 where they were held at Lodge St.

Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855) and her sisters Emily Bronte (1818-1848) and Anne Bronte (1820-1849) have charmed, inspired, and even shocked readers from the Victorian age to the present. Raised in Haworth, Yorkshire, the three sisters produced such classics as Jane Eyre Wuthering Heights , and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall . Influenced by British Romantic poets like Wordsworth, Scott, and Byron, the Brontes produced a cast of unforgettable characters such as the devoted governess, Jane Eyre, and the lovers, Heathcliff, Cathy, and Hareton. The Bronte Family website explores the lives, literature, and art of these important Victorian women writers.

    Maria Brontë
    April 1814 - May 6, 1825
Born Hartshead, Yorkshire, ? 1814 (baptised 23rd April).
Died Haworth, Yorkshire, 6th May 1825.
"Maria was delicate, unusually clever and thoughtful for her age, gentle, and untidy....
    Life
"When my children were very young, when, as far as I can remember, the oldest was about ten years of age, and the youngest about four, thinking that they knew more than I had yet discovered, in order to make them speak with less timidity, I deemed that if they were put under a sort of cover I might gain my end; and happening to have a mask in the house, I told them all to stand and speak boldly from under cover of the mask....Lastly, I asked the oldest what was the best mode of spending time; she answered, ‘By laying it out in preparation for a happy eternity.’ "
"Long before Maria Brontë died, at the age of eleven, her father used to say he could converse with her on any of the leading topics of the day with as much freedom and pleasure as with any grown-up person."
