"Branwell" 'the likeness was perfect'
Branwell was born on 26 June 1817, a little over a year after Charlotte. He grew into a very talented young man, sharing his sisters' literary prowess, and had artistic talents that even surpassed theirs; but he was of a very emotional and erratic nature, and had a 'moral weakness' - to use Juliet Barker's words - which made him prone to dissolute ways. He could not settle to focus his skills in any one area. Almost every venture he attempted finished in disaster, as did his affair with his employer's wife, Lydia Robinson, at Thorp Green in 1845; and this last encounter proved to be the final nail in the coffin lid. He immediately sank into a deep state of depression, turned heavily to drink and became increasingly dependant on opium. In the last few years of his life, Emily regarded him as 'a hopeless being' His health gradually deteriorated, though his death, which occurred on the morning of Sunday 24 September 1848, still came as a shock to the family. He was aged just 31. The cause of his death was recorded as 'Chronic bronchitis - Marasmus'; though, through his recorded symptoms, it is now believed that he also had consumption.

Get more information about this book Plot Summary of The Infernal World of Branwell Bronte "This biography examines the life of Branwell Bronte, the brother of the famous sisters Emily, Charlotte, and Anne Bronte. Branwell was considered the most talented of the Bronte siblings in his youth. He not only lead his sisters in the imaginative games the Brontes devised, but he also wrote the most poetry of the children. While Branwell was young, Emily, Anne, and Charlotte collaborated with their brother in creating intricate poems and writings about fictional worlds.
Although all the Bronte children became obsessed with the worlds they created, Branwell continued to be haunted by the worlds which had been created by the Brontes. Branwell also suffered a difficult childhood due to the strictness of his father and tragedy within the family. Branwell and his sisters lost their mother and a sister. While Anne, Emily, and Charlotte left home to pursue schooling and employment, Branwell was taught at home by his father. A number of efforts were made to advance Branwell in the world, even though the Brontes had very little money to help Branwell. Unfortunately, Branwell was unable to gain lasting and gainful employment. There is historical evidence that he abused drugs or alcohol and may have caused some scandal through his love affairs. Although Branwell was loved by his family, he was the only one of the grown Bronte siblings to achieve no literary success. He remains the most elusive of the mysterious Bronte family."

      Six Famous Siblings
By Stacy in Neatorama Exclusives on Dec 2, 2008 at 6:55 pm It must be hard being the lesser-known sibling of one of the world’s greatest painters, or authors, or minds. On a larger scale, I bet it’s like going through high school as the younger sibling of a brother who was the star quarterback. “Van Gogh? Are you related to Vincent? Oh, man, Starry Night was just amazing.” OK, maybe not. But at any rate, there are often supportive siblings behind the successes of great people – here are just a few of them.
      Branwell Bronte
Branwell was the only boy out of all of the Bronte siblings, and was by all accounts extremely talented in his own right. But what I think is most interesting is that he may have been the inspiration behind The Graduate The Graduate , is also rumored to have based the novel on his own affair with an older, rich socialite, but I would say he had at least heard of the Branwell Bronte story just based on the similarity of the names of the main characters.
      Cassandra Austen
Like a lot of little sisters, Jane adored her older sibling and emulated everything Cassandra did. Their mother once said, “If Cassandra’s head had been going to be cut off, Jane would have hers cut off too.” Jane wrote numerous letters to her sister, but only about 100 have survived. Cassandra supposedly destroyed most of the letters after Jane died in 1817. Like her famous sister, Cassandra never married.
