Contribute Hall Of Heroes - Literary Legends Browning, Robert Posted by Mark Grainger, 20th Aug 2006 Robert Browning was born in Camberwell, Surrey, on May 7, 1812, a self taught son of a Bank of England clerk. He wrote poetry from an early age and was influenced by Percy Shelley and admired by J. Stuart Mill, who remarked that Browning's work developed a "more intense and mobid self-consciousness than I ever knew in any sane being" and directed the poet towards the dramatic adaptation of personae that is evident in Men and Women (1855) and in The Ring and the Book (four volumes, 1868-69). He began corresponding with Elizabeth Barrett in 1845 after admiring her work, and they married in secret the following year. In addition to its philosophical depth and spiritual insight, Browning's poetry was innovatory in the development of a new kind of narrative structure to replace the epic and the pastoral. At the time many reviewers criticised his work as "obscure" but he was a major influence on the work of Ruskin and Christina Rosetti.
He died at his son's home Ca' Rezzonico in Venice on 12 December 1889, the same day Asolando was published, and was buried in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey; his grave now lies immediately adjacent to that of Alfred Tennyson.

    Browning, Robert
Robert Browning was born in 1812 in Camberwall, England to a religious mother and a father who worked as a bank clerk. He had almost no formal education as he was tutored at home from the age of fourteen and was only briefly enrolled at the University of London. At the age of twelve, Browning received a book of Shelley¢s poetry and was so influenced by the poet that he declared himself an atheist and a vegetarian soon after. In 1833, Browning anonymously published his first major work, Pauline . It was his next piece, a dramatic poem entitled ¢Paracelsus¢? that brought him attention from the literary world.
During the following years, Robert Browning published several unsuccessful plays and a series of poems including ¢Pippa Passes,¢? ¢My Last Duchess,¢? and ¢The Bishop Orders his Tomb¢? under the title of Bells and Pomegranates. Despite his lack of success with literary contemporaries, the techniques he developed in his dramatic monologues are now regarded as notable contributions to classic poetry. Upon discovering the poems of Elizabeth Barrett, Robert Browning began writing letters to her, leading up to their meeting in 1845. Robert quickly fell in love with Elizabeth and convinced her to agree to a secret marriage in 1846. A week after their marriage, Robert and Elizabeth sailed for Italy, and bought a house in Florence, where he published a series of dramatic monologues entitled Men and Women. Though the monologues were not popular at the time, they are now regarded as his best works.

Robert Browning was born on May 7, 1812, in Camberwell, England. His mother was an accomplished pianist and a devout evangelical Christian. His father, who worked as a bank clerk, was also an artist, scholar, antiquarian, and collector of books and pictures. His rare book collection of more than 6,000 volumes included works in Greek, Hebrew, Latin, French, Italian, and Spanish. Much of Browning's education came from his well-read father. It is believed that he was already proficient at reading and writing by the age of five. A bright and anxious student, Browning learned Latin, Greek, and French by the time he was fourteen. From fourteen to sixteen he was educated at home, attended to by various tutors in music, drawing, dancing, and horsemanship. At the age of twelve he wrote a volume of Byronic verse entitled

Robert Browning (1812-1889) English poet, noted for his mastery of dramatic monologue. Robert Browning was long unsuccesful as a poet and financially dependent upon his family until he was well into adulthood. In his best works people from the past reveal their thoughts and lives as if speaking or thinking aloud. "Be sure I looked up her eyes
Happy and proud; at last I knew
    Porphyria worshipped me; surprise
Made my heart swell, and still it grew
While I debated what to do.
That moment she was mine, mine, fair,
Perfectly pure and good; I found A thing to do, and all her hair In one long yellow string I wound Three times her little throat around, And strangled her. No pain felt she; I am quite sure she felt no pain."
(from 'Porphyria's Lover' in Dramatic Lyrics Robert Browning was born in Camberwell, south London, the son of Robert Browning, a wealthy clerk in the Bank of England, and Sarah Anna Wiedemann, of German-Scottish origin. Robert Browning Senior had spent in his youth some time on the Caribbean island of St Kitts, where he become disgusted at the slaves' treatment. Back at England, he thought of a career of an artist, but eventually accepted his job at the bank. Sarah Anna loved music and gardening. The historian Thomas Carlyle called her "the true type of a Scottish gentlewoman". Browning received scant formal education. However, his father encouraged him to read and he had access to his large (6,000 vols) library. The book collection filled most of the third storey at the family's house at New Cross. In his teens, Browning discovered

Open to guests and visitors, Casa Guidi in Florence, where Robert and Elizabeth Browning spent their idyllic married life, offers us a firsthand glimpse of their lasting passion for Italy, poetry, and each other. On the afternoon of September 12, 1846, fragile poetess Elizabeth Barrett defied her tyrannical and fanatically religious father, Edward, the widowed scion of rich Jamaican slaveholders. With faithful maid, Elizabeth Wilson, her only companion, she slipped out of the family home on London's Wimpole Street and married Robert Browning in secret at St. Marylebone Parish Church. She was forty; Robert was six years younger. She was already acclaimed for her verses; he was yet to achieve widespread fame. The couple was passionately in love. They had met in May 1845, though Robert was already an admirer of Elizabeth's poetry and had been writing love letters to her for several months before their first meeting.
