, a Swiss physician and anatomist of eminence, was born at Diessenhofen, the 16th of January , 1653. After passing through the usual school education, he was sent, at the age of sixteen, to Strasburgh, where, applying assiduously to the study of physic and anatomy, he was created doctor in medicine in 1672. For his thesis, he gave the anatomy of a child with two heads, which he met with. He now went to Paris , and attended the schools and hospitals there with such assiduity, as to attract the notice, and gain him the intimacy of Dionis and du Verny, who were present while he made the experiments on the pancreas, which enabled him, some years after, to publish a more accurate description of that viscus, than had been before given, under the title of “ Experimenta nova circa Pancreas. Accedit Diatribe de Lympha et genuine Pancreatis usu, ” Leidse, 1682, 8vo. He proved that the fluid secreted by the pancreas is not necessary to digestion, and that an animal may live after that viscus is taken out of the body, having tried the experiment upon a dog, which perfectly recovered from the operation. On quitting Paris , he came to London , and was introduced to Dr. Willis, Lower, and

8. John Brunner: A Remembrance
A short memorial to Brunner written on the occasion of his death in 1995.

John Brunner: A Remembrance
The following remembrance was written on the occasion of the death, on 25 August 1995, of science fiction writer John Brunner, at the World Science Fiction Convention in Glasgow, Scotland: John Kilian Houston Brunner wasn't just a famous pro writer to me. He was a friend of mine for the past 20-odd years. I can't say just when I was first aware of his work, but I remember reading Stand on Zanzibar upon its publication in 1968. That was an impressive piece of work, by a writer with a great cynical bent and an understanding of what makes people tick and why things go wrong and that was precisely the sort of insight he was best at bringing into science fiction. Our personal association began, I think, in 1972, when I read a short story of his, "Planetfall," which was contained in a collection, From This Day Forward . It was a brief mood piece about a girl in a run-down spaceport town who meets a boy from a spacefaring generation ship that puts down in the port for supplies; they meet and talk for only a night and then separate, never to meet again. I was 19 and a budding composer, and so I thought, "This would make a wonderful short opera!" Of course I had to have his permission, and I wrote him care of Doubleday & Co. I don't know what some other writers would have done, but John wrote back in the friendliest terms and said he would like to see me give a try at the project. He didn't know who I was, he'd never heard a note I'd written, and for all I know he may not have known where Santa Monica (where I then lived) was. But the idea that someone wanted to take his story (if not his actual words), and make an opera out of it, was exciting to him. We had a lively conversation in letters for some months, in which we exchanged ideas on music (about which he knew a great deal), on liberal and radical politics (about which he knew even more), about anything and everything. And then finally he happened to visit Los Angeles. He would be staying at the home of Kris and Lil Neville, and some other friends would be popping by, and he

Heroes of Cyberspace: John Brunner
by Charles A. Gimon
for INFO NATION "For all the claims one hears about the liberating impact of the data-net, the truth is that it's wished on most of us a brand-new reason for paranoia." John Brunner, "The Shockwave Rider", 1975. John Brunner contributed to the world's science fiction heritage for over forty years. Publishing his first novel at age 17 in 1951, he continued to put out traditional "hard" science fiction through the fifties and sixties. Among several dozen titles he produced, four stand out: "The Sheep Look Up", "The Jagged Orbit", "Stand on Zanzibar", and "The Shockwave Rider", all published between 1968 and 1975. "Stand on Zanzibar", which won a Hugo award in 1968, moved Brunner out of deep-space adventures and into the near-future dystopias which were popular in the late sixties and early seventies (think of the films "Soylent Green" or "A Clockwork Orange"), and which prepared the way for the cyberpunk movement. The world of "Stand on Zanzibar" is an overpopulated and generally stressed-out world of the early 21st century. This is a world beset by all variety of problems, some related to diminishing resources, some related to the breakneck progress of technology. But it's a world not far removed from our own: nation-states still hold power, some people still have regular jobs, people even still use paper mail and voice phones. The main motif of "Stand on Zanzibar" is the stress-symptom: what happens to people when there are starting to be too many of them? Brunner makes shrewd guesses not so much about science or catastrophe, but about how politics, society and even pop culture would be affected. He coins a future slang word "mucker" to describe a person who snaps under the stress and flies into a homicidal rage.

An enduring classic, this book offers a dramatic and prophetic look at the potential consequences of the escalating destruction of Earth. In this nightmare society, air pollution is so bad that gas masks are commonplace. Infant mortality is up, and everyone seems to suffer from some form of ailment. The water is polluted, and only the poor drink from the tap. The government is ineffectual, and corporate interests scramble to make a profit from water purifiers, gas masks, and organic foods. Environmentalist Austin Train is on the run. The Trainites, environmental activists and sometime terrorists, want him to lead their movement. The government wants him in jail, or preferably, executed. The media wants a circus. Everyone has a plan for Train, but Train has a plan of his own. This suspenseful science fiction drama is now available to a new generation of enthusiasts. List Price: $15.95

20. John Brunner: Stand On Zanzibar - An Infinity Plus Review
An infinity Plus review of the author s 1968 Hugo winning novel.
http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/nonfiction/zanzibar.htm
Stand on Zanzibar (SF Masterworks No15)
There is an art to SF extrapolation, the teasing out of current trends in science, technology, politics and history and extending them forward into near-futures that are both interesting and plausible. John Brunner was a master in the field, as books like The Sheep Look Up and The Shockwave Rider prove. But his best work was undoubtedly Stand On Zanzibar , a chilling, funny, fascinating and exciting view of the early 21st Century as seen from the late 1960s. First published in 1968, Stand On Zanzibar quite rightly scooped the Hugo for best novel, and still stands up as a remarkable work thirty years on. Of course, Brunner didn't get everything right - he missed the collapse of the communist states in Europe, for example, and computing in Stand On Zanzibar is still at the mega-big centralised computer stage (and trawling through multi-page printouts, no doubt on green-lined computer paper - what memories that brings back), rather than distributed desktop systems. But he did have a high strike rate for things like the role of huge multi- national corporations, of television's impact , and the growing differences between rich and poor states. Indeed, one of the 'plots' of the book is hinged around that difference, with a major corporation having the financial power to 'buy' a small African state, and use it as a tool to enhance both their own profits, while at the same time improving immeasurably the lot of the Africans. Where Brunner really scores is in fusing a number of different storylines together to give a picture of a future that is familiar enough to be recognisable and nightmarish enough to be disturbing. Thirty years on, Brunner's future 'dystopia' is close enough to reality to have considerable power for the modern reader. That it is available again for new readers to find is marvellous. If you've never read it, make a bee-line for it. If you have, it stands the test of time well, so why not read it again?
