2. Charles Bukowski - Der Andere / The Other - LESELUST-Rezension
Kurze Rezension, Lesermeinung und Textprobe in Leselust .

Charles Bukowski - Der Andere
Originaltitel: The Other
Erzählung(en). Diverse 1995
50 Seiten, ISBN: 3875122550

Biography
German-American writer who traveled throughout the U.S. A lifetime of poems, novels and screenplays reflected his boozy, gritty, carnal view of the universe, including his screenplay for the critically praised 1987 film "Barfly," which starred Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway as a pair of dissolute drunks. Bukowski became a celebrity with influential friends in 1987 with the release of the film, which was based on his life by the time he was 25. As a lush, he spent much of his life drinking cheap booze, cavorting with cheap broads and brawling in cheap bars around the country. He supported his lifestyle by working odd jobs such as driving a truck, janitorial work and working for the post office. He found the time along the way to write short stories for underground magazines. At 35, he began to write poetry. In his 50-year career he wrote over 1,000 published poems, 32 books of poetry, five books of short stories, six novels and the screenplay for "Barfly." Bukowski was a four-year-old kid in Andernach, West Germany when the family moved to Los Angeles. His Prussian milkman father delivered regular beatings to the boy. He took his first swigs of alcohol at 13 to ease the emotional and psychological pain. He attended Los Angeles City College for two years, 1939-1941, taking journalism courses but dropped out of school at the beginning of WW II. He spent the next ten years drifting around the country as portrayed in the autobiographical film, "Barfly."

Charles Bukowski Biography
Writer Poet
Henry Charles Bukowski was a drunken loafer and prolific writer known best for writing the autobiographical screenplay for Barfly (1987). "Hank" Bukowski was born in Germany but spent almost all of his life around Los Angeles, a city that figures prominently in his work. He first began publishing short stories (as Charles Bukowski) in the 1940s, but until the 1960s led an itinerant life on the fringes of society, working occasionally and abusing alcohol regularly. In the '60s and '70s his poems, short stories and essays appeared in small publications in the U.S. and Europe and he earned a small but loyal audience. He worked off and on in a post office until 1970, when he accepted a $100 monthly stipend from his publisher to "write and starve." The subject matter of his own life and his bare, sometimes comic descriptions of disaffected outsiders made him an underground celebrity, well-known in Europe and largely ignored in the U.S. until the movie Barfly . He died in 1994 after battling leukemia, leaving many works to be published posthumously. His poetry collections include

Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) - alter ego: Henry Chinaski American author of the second wave Beat Generation, noted for his stories of survival and heavy drinking on the fringe of society. Before starting his career as a writer, Bukowski worked in menial jobs and as a journalist at Harlequin and Laugh Literature . He was described by Jean Genet and Jean-Paul Sartre as America's 'greatest poet'. However, the author refused to meet Sartre - he had his bottle to take care of. "There are so many," she said, "who go by the name of poet. But they have no training, no feeling for their craft. The savages have taken over the castle. There's no workmanship, no care, simply a demand to be accepted. And these new poet all seem to admire one another. It worries me and I've talked about it to a lot of my poet friends. All a young poet seems to think he needs is a typewriter and a few pieces of paper. They aren't prepared, they have had no preparation at all." (from Hot Water Music Heinrich Karl (Henry Charles) Bukowski, Jr. was born in Andernach in Germany the son of Henry Bukowski, a US soldier, and Katharina Fett, a German woman. His family emigrated to the United States in 1922, and settled in Los Angeles, where Bukowski spent most of his life. The city became an integral part of his writing. Bukowski's father was in and out of work during the Depression years, regularly beating the boy. "I had to sleep on my belly at night because of the pain."
