        "Charles Bukowski"

        "Charles Bukowski"
A biography of the lowlife nihilist forgoes the fig leaves.
By Jonathan Miles I n his 40-plus books of poetry and prose, Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) wrote paean after scabrous paean to fucking, drinking, gambling, shitting, smoking, masturbating, more fucking, more drinking, more gambling and then, ultimately, more drinking. Disheveled, degenerate and, more often than not, drunk, Bukowski was the human embodiment of a raised middle finger, a lowlife nihilist who laid bare the most perilous of human truths by laying bare his own perilous truths. Perhaps no writer of the 20th century or of any century, for the matter was so willing to chuck authorial dignity in the pursuit of those grainy truths. Whatever happened to Bukowski love, death, heartbreak, impotence or flatulence somehow found its way, rank and unadorned, into his writing. For a biographer, this degree of autobiographical blur is both blessing and curse. A wide scree of raw data lies scattered through Bukowski's oeuvre, but its ample presence raises the question of why a biography is even necessary. Octavio Paz's observation "Poets don't have biographies. Their work is their biography" was never more apt than it is here. But this line of inquiry may be too precious. Bukowski's life, after all, was a gossip-monger's dream, a salacious string of rants and raves in which movie stars, skid-row drunks, famous poets and violent women moved about freely. The first biography of him, his pal Neeli Cherkovski's 1991 "Bukowski: A Life," was a thoughtful and stylish appraisal that nonetheless suffered from a lack of distance and a slight but significant bungling of facts. Now comes "Charles Bukowski: Locked in the Arms of a Crazy Life," by Howard Sounes, a 34-year-old British journalist.

The ancient Romans had lusty appetites; just like modern people, they seemed to have one thing on their minds. The Charles Bukowski Memorial Center for Classical Latin Studies seeks to drag obscenity out of those dusty tomes and stick it right where it belongs. Bukowski wrote the same sort of poetry that Catullus did, the kind that hits you hard in the gut. The two poets even shared common themes
Obscurae Scriptae
Some obscene Latin texts are well known, such as the naughty poems of Catullus. The Obscure Organization is proud to offer a new hypertext edition of Catullus with a full concordance Other texts are even more obscure.

Two Letters to his publisher, John Martin (of Black Sparrow Press) and to William Packard, Editor of New York Quarterly.

Charles Bukowski
Two Letters
To John Martin, 1986 To William Packard, 1992
To his publisher, John Martin (of Black Sparrow Press)
Hello John: Thanks for the good letter. I don't think it hurts, sometimes, to remember where you came from. You know the places where I came from. Even the people who try to write about that or make films about it, they don't get it right. They call it "9 to 5." It's never 9 to 5, there's no free lunch break at those places, in fact, at many of them in order to keep your job you don't take lunch. Then there's OVERTIME and the books never seem to get the overtime right and if you complain about that , there's another sucker to take your place. You know my old saying, "Slavery was never abolished, it was only extended to include all the colors." And what hurts is the steadily diminishing humanity of those fighting to hold jobs they don't want but fear the alternative worse. People simply empty out. They are bodies with fearful and obedient minds. The color leaves the eye. The voice becomes ugly. And the body. The hair. The fingernails. The shoes. Everything does. As a young man I could not believe that people could give their lives over to those conditions. As an old man, I still can't believe it. What do they do it for? Sex? TV? An automobile on monthly payments? Or children? Children who are just going to do the same things that they did?

68. The Great Poet - Charles Bukowski
Short story from Hot Water Music - Poems and Stories .
http://home.swipnet.se/~w-15266/cultur/bukowski/short01.htm
The Great Poet I went to see him. He was the great poet. He was the best narrative poet since Jeffers, still under 70 and famous throughout the world. Perhaps his two best-known books were My Grief Is Better Than Your Grief, Ha! and The Dead Chew Gum In Languor . He had taught at many universities, had won all the prizes, including the Nobel Prize. Bernard Stachman. I climbed the steps of the YMCA. Mr. Stachman lived in Room 223. I knocked. "HELL, COME ON IN!" somebody screamed from inside. I opened the door and walked in. Bernard Stachman was in bed. The smell of vomit, wine, urine, shit and decaying food was in the air. I began to gag. I ran to the bathroom, vomited, then came out. "Mr. Stachman," I said, "why don't you open a window?"
"That's a good idea. And don't give me any of that 'Mr. Stachman' shit, I'm Barney." He was crippled, and after a great effort he managed to pull himself out of the bed and into the chair at his side. "Now for a good talk," he said. "I've been waiting for this." At his elbow, on a table, was a gallon jug of dago red filled with cigarette ashes and dead moths. I looked away, then looked back. He had the jug to his mouth but most of the wine ran right back out, down his shirt, down his pants. Bernard Stachman put the jug back. "Just what I needed."

69. THE BLACKBIRDS ARE ROUGH TODAY
A poem from The Romminghouse Madrigals Early Selected Poems 1946-1966 .
http://www.litkicks.com/Buk/birds.html
THE BLACKBIRDS ARE ROUGH TODAY lonely as a dry and used orchard
spread over the earth
for use and surrender.
shot down like an ex-pug selling
dailies on the corner.
taken by tears like
an aging chorus girl
who has gotten her last check.
a hanky is in order your lord your
worship.
the blackbirds are rough today like ingrown toenails in an overnight jail- wine wine whine, the blackbirds run around and fly around harping about Spanish melodies and bones. and everywhere is nowhere- the dream is as bad as flapjacks and flat tires: why do we go on with our minds and pockets full of dust like a bad boy just out of school- you tell me, you who were a hero in some revolution you who teach children you who drink with calmness you who own large homes and walk in gardens you who have killed a man and own a beautiful wife you tell me why I am on fire like old dry garbage. we might surely have some interesting correspondence. it will keep the mailman busy. and the butterflies and ants and bridges and cemeteries the rocket-makers and dogs and garage mechanics will still go on a while until we run out of stamps and/or ideas.

Vorne im Buch steht: "For Barbet Schroeder".
A couple of days later Pinchot phoned.
