Intelligent and skillfully written, with sharply drawn, sympathetic characters, War for the Oaks is about love and loyalty, life and death, and creativity and sacrifice. Eddi McCandry has just left her boyfriend and their band when she finds herself running through the Minneapolis night, pursued by a sinister man and a huge, terrifying dog. The two creatures are one and the same: a phouka , a faerie being who has chosen Eddi to be a mortal pawn in the age-old war between the Seelie and Unseelie Courts. Eddi isn't interestedbut she doesn't have a choice. Now she struggles to build a new life and new band when she might not even survive till the first rehearsal. War for the Oaks won the Locus Magazine award for Best First Novel and was a finalist for the Mythopoeic Society Award. Other books by Emma Bull include the novels

SUMMARY It is 1849. Across Europe, the high tide of revolution has crested, leaving recrimination and betrayal in its wake. From the high councils of Prussia to the corridors of Parliament, the powers-that-be breathe sighs of relief. But the powers-that-be are hardly unified among themselves. Far from it . . .
On the south coast of England, London man-about-town James Cobham comes to himself in a country inn, with no idea how he got there. Corresponding with his brother, he discovers he has been presumed drowned in a boating accident. Together they decide that he should stay put for the moment, while they investigate what may have transpired. For James Cobham is a wanted manwanted by conspiring factions of the government and the Chartists alike, and also targeted by a magical conspiracy inside his own family.

Bujold, Lois McMaster Bujold wrote an excellent series of science fiction novels in a common universe of space exploration, political struggle and personal honor. Most of them deal with the Vorkosigan family, including my favorites Shards of Honor Warrior's Apprentice , and the collection Borders of Infinity
    Cherryh, C. J.
Cherryh wrote a large number of novels, both fantasy and science fiction. Almost all are very competent, and some are very good indeed. Most SF books take place in a large and loosely connected future history, including one of my favorites, the Hugo-winning Cyteen Paladin is one of her best fantasy books (high on sword and light on sorcery).
