Literary activity.
During this imprisonment Bunyan wrote and published his spiritual autobiography ( Grace Abounding, 1666). Bunyan's release from prison came in March 1672 under Charles II's Declaration of Indulgence to the Nonconformists. The Bedford community had already chosen him as their pastor in January, and a new meetinghouse was obtained. In May he received a license to preach together with 25 other Nonconformist ministers in Bedfordshire and the surrounding counties. His nickname "Bishop Bunyan" suggests that he became the organizing genius in the area. When persecution was renewed he was again imprisoned for illegal preaching; the circumstances of this imprisonment have remained more obscure than those of the first, though it does not appear to have lasted longer than six months. A bond of surety for his release, dated June 1677, has survived, so it is likely that this second detention was in the first half of that year. Since The Pilgrim's Progress was published soon after this, in February 1678, it is probable that he had begun to write it not in the second imprisonment but in the first, soon after the composition of

Bunyan, John
(b . November 1628, Elstow, Bedfordshire, Eng.d. Aug. 31, 1688, London), celebrated English minister and preacher, author of The Pilgrim's Progress (1678), the book that was the most characteristic expression of the Puritan religious outlook. His other works include doctrinal and controversial writings; a spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding (1666); and the allegory The Holy War
Early life.
Bunyan, the son of a brazier, or traveling tinker, was brought up "among a multitude of poor plowmen's children" in the heart of England's agricultural Midlands. He learned to read and write at a local grammar school, but he probably left school early to learn the family trade. Bunyan's mind and imagination were formed in these early days by influences other than those of formal education. He absorbed the popular tales of adventure that appeared in chapbooks and were sold at fairs like the great one held at Stourbridge near Cambridge (it provided the inspiration for Vanity Fair in The Pilgrim's Progress ). Though his family belonged to the Anglican church, he also became acquainted with the varied popular literature of the English Puritans: plain-speaking sermons, homely moral dialogues, books of melodramatic judgments and acts of divine guidance, and John Foxe's

John Bunyan John Bunyan is perhaps the most popular religious writer in the English language. His best known work, The Pilgrim's Progress has been translated into more languages than any book other than the Bible. Bunyan was born at Elstow, England, about a mile from Bedford, the son of a poor tinker (a maker of metal utensils). He probably acquired most of his knowledge of the English language from reading the Bible. As a young man, Bunyan served in the Army and fought in the English Civil War on the side of the Roundheads. He married in 1649, and among his new wife's possessions were copies of Dent's Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven and Bayly's Practice of Piety . Reading these had a profound influence on Bunyan's spiritual life. In 1653 he joined Pastor Gifford's Independent Church, in Bedford. Shortly thereafter he began to preach, and his preaching proved to be popular with his listeners, but not with the magistrate in Bedford who sentenced him to jail for "unauthorized preaching." Bunyan was set free, but he again jailed after he refused to stop preaching in public. His imprisonment was intermittent from 1660 to 1672, but he used the time to begin writing The Pilgrim's Progress and several other works, including some poetry. Bunyan's major works are

Bunyan, John (
Bunyan, John , author of the “Pilgrim's Progress,” born in Elstow, near Bedford , the son of a tinker, and bred himself to that humble craft; he was early visited with religious convictions, and brought, after a time of resistance to them, to an earnest faith in the gospel of Christ, his witness for which to his poor neighbours led to his imprisonment, an imprisonment which extended first and last over twelve and a half years, and it was towards the close of it, and in the precincts of Bedford jail, in the spring of 1676, that he dreamed his world -famous dream; here two-thirds of it were written, the whole finished the year after, and published at the end of it; extended, it came out eventually in two parts, but it is the first part that is the Pilgrim's Progress, and ensures it the place it holds in the religious literature of the world ; encouraged by the success of it—for it leapt into popularity at a bound—Bunyan wrote some sixty other books, but except this, his masterpiece, not more than two of these, “
