William (Seward) Burroughs (1914-1997) American writer of experimental novels, who lived long times in Mexico City, Tanger, Paris, and London. Burroughs's homosexual themes in THE NAKED LUNCH (1959) and the frankness with which he dealt with his own experiences as a drug addict sparkled the last major obscenity trial in U.S., but won him a following among writers, musicians, and film makers. Burroughs produced the bulk of his writing after he moved to London and took an apomorphine cure under the direction of Dr John Dent. "You know how old people lose all shame about eating, and it makes you puke to watch them? Old junkies are the same about junk. They gibber and squeal about the sight of it. The spit hangs off their skin, and their stomach rumbles and all their guts grind in peristalsis while they cook up, dissolving the body's decent skin, you expect any moment a great blob of protoplasm will flop right out and surround the junk. Really disgust you to see it." (from The Naked Lunch William Seward Burroughs II was born in St. Louis, Mo. into a successful business family. His mother, Laura Lee, was a direct descendant of Robert E. Lee, his grandfather the inventor of the Burroughs adding machine. The Burroughs Corporation ultimately merged with the Sperry Corporation to create Unisys. By the time of Burroughs's birth, his father Mortimer had already sold his stock in the company.

BURROUGHS, William S Burroughs Eine Bild-Biographie (Berlin), Nishen, (1994). The hardcover issue of this photo-biography of Burroughs. This is a contributor's copy belonging to Nelson Lyon, who contributed three of the photographs. With the publisher's prospectus laid in, as well as a letter to Lyon identifying this as a sample copy and including a statement of Lyon's royalties. Signed by Lyon, and also signed in the year of publication by Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, and Timothy Leary Signed three times (on the title page and on two of the photos in which he appears) by Gregory Corso . Ginsberg appears in several photos, as does Leary who also contributes a piece of writing. Never published in the U.S. and including a large number of photos of Burroughs that do not appear elsewhere. Near fine in mildly splayed boards, with rubbing to the joints, and a small bit of smoke damage to the front endpapers and title page. Text in German; the photographs need no translation. Scarce in the hardcover issue; probably unique with the signatures. All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted.

After graduating from Harvard in 1936, Burroughs drifted for a number of years, settling in New York in 1943. There he joined up with the poet Allen Ginsberg and the writer Jack Kerouac, with whom he shared a lifestyle of alcohol, junk food and drug addiction. In New York, Burroughs met and married another drug addict, Joan Vollmer, whom he accidentally shot and killed in 1951. Paradoxically, this gave birth to Burroughs as a writer. "I am forced to the appalling conclusion," he wrote, "that I would never have become a writer but for Joan's death. I had no choice but to write my way out". Burroughs' first novel, Junkie: Confessions of an Unredeemed Drug Addict, was published under a pseudonym in 1953. In 1954, he moved to Tangier, where he lived in poverty and drug dependency until, almost penniless, he underwent an apomorphine cure in London. Moving to Paris, he began to put together the notes he had made during the 15 years of his addiction. This became Naked Lunch, published in Paris in 1959 by Maurice Girodias of the Olympia Press.

Inscribed by Burroughs to the actress Ruth Ford: "For Ruth Ford, All the best, William S. Burroughs." Ford was the Mississippi-born sister of surrealist author Charles Henri Ford, as well as a beautiful model and actress, first in Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre, and later in films and theater. Notably, she starred on Broadway in Jean Paul Sartre's No Exit in 1946, under the direction of John Huston (the last of five Broadway plays he directed). Her apartment in the Dakota became a salon for authors such as Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee, Terrence McNally, and Truman Capote. A chance encounter between Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents in her Manhattan living room led to their collaboration, with her Dakota-neighbor Leonard Bernstein, on West Side Story . Similarly, she brought together Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight to create the celebrated stories of

Junky
William S. Burroughs never planned on being a writer. He'd written stories as a child and had a superb literary background, but as a young man his only aspiration was to explore America's seedy urban underworlds. When he finally became a writer, it was only because of the unwritten rule that everybody who hangs out with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg shall write at least one book. "Junky," Burroughs' first book, was a straightforward account of his life as a heroin junkie. Now, forty years later, the book sparkles with literary promise, but in the early fifties it was suitable for publication only as a sensationalistic pulp paperback. Ginsberg's friend Carl Solomon 's uncle ran Ace Books, and Ace was so nervous about taking responsibility for this shockingly frank story that they coupled it with another book by a narcotics agent, telling how he chased and caught people like Burroughs. Not wanting his family to know he had written such a nasty book (they supported him financially), Burroughs assumed his mother's maiden name, Lee. "Junky" by William Lee was forgotten soon after it came out in 1953, and rediscovered after ' Naked Lunch ' made Burroughs famous.
