46. Salon | J.G. Ballard On William S. Burroughs' Naked Truth
salon magazine interview.
http://www.salon.com/sept97/wsb970902.html
BY RICHARD KADREY AND SUZANNE STEFANAC
w illiam Burroughs' raw-boned figure haunted us long before his death. For nearly half a century, he infected our literature, seeding it with his obsessions, suspicions and passions. In his brutal honesty, we began to learn something new about truth and humor and maybe even love. Of the many authors who have acknowledged his influence, few have been as unflinching or provocative as J.G. Ballard. From the chromey auto-eroticism of "Crash" to the surrendered innocence of "Empire of the Sun," Ballard has refined a style that cuts through the moralism and sentimentality that blunt so much contemporary writing. After Burroughs' death, Ballard spoke to us by phone from his home in Shepperton, England. William Burroughs was someone who was suspicious of language and words, but his whole life was defined by them. Do you see a contradiction here? Perhaps the essential writer's contradiction? I think Burroughs was very much aware of the way in which language could be manipulated to mean absolutely the opposite of what it seems to mean. But that's something he shared with George Orwell. He was always trying to go through the screen of language to find some sort of truth that lay on the other side. I think his whole cut-up approach was an attempt to cut through the apparent manifest content of language to what he hoped might be some sort of more truthful world. A world of meaning that lay beyond. In books like "The Ticket that Exploded" and "The Soft Machine," you see this attempt to go through language to something beyond. If there is a paradox, I think it lies somewhere here.

William Burroughs Junky
Certainly, Burroughs himself viewed the postwar era as a Gotterdammerung and a convulsive reevaluation of all values. With his anomic inclinations and his Mandarin intellect, Burroughs was in a paradoxical position vis a vis the coming cultural revolution of the 1960s. An open homosexual and a drug addict, his quintessentially Midwestern libertarianism led him to eschew any command economy of ethics, while his personal inclinations meant he had to travel with distastefully socialist and liberal fellows. For Burroughs, the reevaluation was both discount and markup, and perhaps it was this that made him such a great avatar of the emergent counterculture. The Letters of William S. [Beat Generation writer William S. Burroughs at home in Lawrence, KS, during 1997. From Beat Fools: James Grauerholz and Me40 Years of Weirdness . It all started when I was James Grauerholz's teacher in Fall 1970. He was a freshman student in my "Electronic Media and Society" class, the first at the University of Kansas to use a William Burroughs book ( Nova Express , 1965) as required reading. James Grauerholz went on to become William's boy. It has been confusing ever since. William Burroughs died August 2, 1997.] "Do you believe in UFOs?" William S. Burroughs asked.

, larger version.
We had been talking in William's bedroom while I worked, sitting at his one-drawer wood desk, looking out at the backyard fishpond and his Reichian orgone box. The nervousness of being around William increased due to his reading out loud from Mario Puzo's The Last Don "He wanted blood. He cut the guy to pieces. He cut off his cock and nuts and breasts.... He enjoys doing it and that is very dangerous for the Family...."

The Job
William S. Burroughs (w/Daniel Odier)
18 months of 20 days and a final period of 5 days, the "Ouab days" which were considered especially unlucky and in consequence turned out to be so. The Reactive Mind consists of goals so reuplsive or frightening to the subject that he compulsively reacts against them and it is percisely this reaction that keeps those negative goals in operation. p. 45 juxtaposition of control commands A reconstruction of the symbol system that must underlie the Reactive Mind would open the way for more precise and speedy erasure. To travel in space you must learn to leave the old verbal garbage behind: food talk, priest talk, mother talk, family talk, love talk, party talk, country talk. You must learn to exist with no religion, no country, no allies. You must learn to see what is in front of you with no preconceptions. And what does the money machine eat to shit out? It eats youth, spontaneity, life, beauty and above all it eats creativity. It eats quality and shits out quantity. psychopath = "refractory to control" ...the whole country is a shell around a great sullen core of violators.

Letter From A Master Addict To Dangerous Drugs
British Journal of Addiction, Vol. 53, No. 2
August 3rd, 1956 Venice Dear Doctor, Thanks for your letter. I enclose that article on the effects of various drugs I have used. I do not know if it is suitable for your publication. I have no objection to my name being used. No difficulty with drinking. no desire to use any drug. General health excellent. Please give my regards to Mr.. I use his system of exercises daily with excellent results. I have been thinking of writing a book on narcotic drugs if I could find a suitable collaborator to handle the technical end. Yours, William Burroughs. The use of opium and opium derivatives leads to a state that defines limits and describes "addiction"(The term is loosely used to indicate anything one is used to or wants. We speak of addiction to candy, coffee, tobacco, warm weather, television, detective stories, crossword puzzles). So misapplied the term loses any useful precision of meaning. The use of morphine leads to a metabolic dependence on morphine. Morphine becomes a biologic need just as water and the user may die if he is suddenly deprived of it. The diabetic will die without insulin, but he is not addicted to insulin. His need for insulin was not brought about by the use of insulin. He needs insulin to maintain a normal metabolism, and so avoid the excruciatingly painful return to a normal metabolism. I have used a number of "narcotic" drugs over a period of twenty years. Some of these drugs are addicting in the above sense. Most are not:
