Butala, Sharon (1940–)
Sharon Butala. Duane Prentice (Nomadic Visions, Victoria, B.C.) Sharon Butala was born on August 24, 1940, in Nipawin , Saskatchewan. She attended the University of Saskatchewan to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Education, and then worked as an educator of special needs teenagers in Saskatoon . In 1976 she left academia to live with her husband, Peter Butala, on a ranch near Eastend ; she also began her writing career, which focused on the character of the land and the personalities of ranchers and small-town people. Butala first wrote short stories, such as: “The Perfection of the Morning: An Apprenticeship in Nature” (1994), “Coyote’s Morning Cry: Meditations and Dreams from a Life in Nature” (1995), “Wild Stone Heart” (2000), and “Old Man on His Back” (2002). She has also written several plays including Natural Disasters A Killing Frost (1988) and Rodeo Life Although Butala found the move to her new rural home difficult at first, she eventually came to embrace the vastness of her surroundings and used it as inspiration for her writing. However, the underlying theme in all her work has been understanding and exposing the female soul. She is also active in preserving the Saskatchewan landscape: in 1996, she and her husband turned over a portion of their 13,000-acre ranch to the Nature Conservancy of Canada; this land now makes up the Old Man on His Back Prairie and Heritage

Description
Sharon Butala knows that we are all searching, reaching for ways to nurture our soul, define our inner selves and connect with the natural world. In her No. 1 national bestseller, The Perfection of the Morning which has been shortlisted for a Governor General's Award and three Saskatchewan Book Awards she shared her deeply moving, intimate journey through her inner and outer landscapes. Now she offers wisdom, hope and inspiration for what she calls "soul-building." Coyote's Morning Cry is a series of meditations on the meaning of everyday life; the importance of being true to oneself; the inexorable connection between body and soul; the often intangible significance of dreams; and the value of communion with Nature.

Sharon and Peter Butala Sharon and Peter Butala have turned back the clock 125 years to allow a new chance for conservation of the native prairie. In 1996, they donated their 13,100-acre (5,300 ha) ranch near Eastend to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) to establish The Old Man on His Back Prairie and Heritage Preserve (OMB). For this initiative, they received a number of conservation awards, both federal and provincial. They came to this action though very different routes. Sharon left a career teaching at the University of Saskatchewan to move to southwest Saskatchewan when she married rancher Peter Butala in the 1970s. She began writing about the land, spirit and people of rural Saskatchewan and has produced 15 publications. Two of her best selling books, The Perfection of the Morning and Wild Stone Heart , explore her discovery of personal and cultural roots of identity in "the glowing, fragile plains, the radiant hills" of the landscape that she adopted. Sharon Butala is described as "one of the most significant Saskatchewan writers to emerge in this province since the days of Sinclair Ross and W.O. Mitchell."
