Lord of the Dead
The Secret History of Byron
By Tom Holland
Pocket Books, $23
Review by Michael Alec Rose
Tom Holland performs a startling feat of oneupbloodship over Anne Rice in his own interview with a vampire: none other than George Gordon, sixth Lord Byron. The expression "Byronic hero" will never be the same. The trick in this ingenious concoction of a "secret history" for the Romantic poet is the author's culling of a set of actual excerpts from poems, letters, and other biographical documents, all of which obliquely suggest that Byron was trafficking in something more sordid than unseemly love affairs. These real literary fragments become Holland's points of departure for the delightfully appalling narrative, told with literal sangfroid by Byron himself-now some 200 years undead-to a young woman in a London crypt. Beyond all its neck-biting and shameless grand guignol, the real fun of this well-written novel lies in the rightness of its premise. Lord of the Dead takes the Romantic conceit of poet-as-demonic-force to its logical conclusion. Byron wasn't just demonic; he was a demon. And he wasn't just a demon; he was the demon, the king of vampires, the most seductive and powerful of the race. A certain debt to Rice's vision must be acknowledged. Byron, too, suffers from a lingering humanity, a malaise wrought from the vampire's insatiable need to drink human blood, which fuses explosively with the erotic pleasure derived therefrom. Like his own tragic heroes, Byron wanders the globe in search of life's meaning. Even immortality has not granted it to him, and his needful desire for blood marks him for eternal misery.

Crede Byron
Crede Byron is a website which explores several aspects of George Gordon, 6th Lord Byron, and his childhood home of Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire. The site has existed on the internet since June 1998, during which time it has undergone several redesigns. This is the latest design, which also co-incides with its move to a new home. Time constraints mean there is no new content, but since so many of you still kindly tell me they've enjoyed the site, such as it is, I've decided it's worthwhile keeping for those interested to read :) I hope you enjoy your visit!

Link'd with one virtue and a thousand crimes.

(from the "The Corsair" An outcast from society- that is the essential nature of the Byronic hero and lover. A creature of gloom, self-exiled and expiating some 'dark deed he will not name', laying claim to often-mysterious supernatural wickedness.

So We'll Go No More A-Roving
So we'll go no more a-roving So late into the night, Though the heart be still as loving, And the moon be still as bright. For the sword outwears its sheath, And the soul wears out the breast, And the heart must pause to breathe, And Love itself have rest. Though the night was made for loving, And the day returns too soon, Yet we'll go no more a-roving By the light of the moon.

Lord George Byron

http://www.djmcadam.com/byron.html
BYRON, GEORGE GORDON, 6TH LORD BYRON (1788-1824). Poet, was b. in London, the s. of Captain John B. and of Catherine Gordon, heiress of Gight, Aberdeenshire, his second wife, whom he m. for her money and, after squandering it, deserted. He was also the grand-nephew of the 5th, known as the "wicked" Lord B. From his birth he suffered from a malformation of the feet, causing a slight lameness, which was a cause of lifelong misery to him, aggravated by the knowledge that with proper care it might have been cured. After the departure of his f. his mother went to Aberdeen, where she lived on a small salvage from her fortune. She was a capricious woman of violent temper, with no fitness for guiding her volcanic son, and altogether the circumstances of his early life explain, if they do not excuse, the spirit of revolt which was his lifelong characteristic. In 1794, on the death of a cousin, he became heir-presumptive to the title and embarrassed estates of the family, to which, on the death of his great-uncle in 1798, he succeeded. In 1801 he was sent to Harrow, where he remained until 1805, when he proceeded to Trinity Coll., Camb., where he read much history and fiction, lived extravagantly, and got into debt. Some early verses which he had pub.
