Caesar Augustus
Augustus born Gaius Octavius Thurinus and prior to 27 BC, known as Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus after adoption, was the first emperor of the Roman Empire, who ruled from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. The young Octavius was adopted by his great uncle, Julius Caesar, and came into his inheritance after Caesar's assassination in 44 BC. In 43 BC, Octavian joined forces with Mark Antony and Marcus Aemilius Lepidus in a military dictatorship known as the Second Triumvirate. As a Triumvir, Octavian effectually ruled Rome and most of its provinces as an autocrat, seizing consular power after the deaths of the consuls Hirtius and Pansa and having himself perpetually re-elected. The Triumvirate was eventually torn apart under the competing ambitions of its rulers: Lepidus was driven into exile, and Antony committed suicide following his defeat at the Battle of Actium by the armies of Octavian in 31 BC. After the demise of the Second Triumvirate, Octavian restored the outward facade of the Roman Republic, with governmental power vested in the Roman Senate, but in practice retained his autocratic power. It took several years to work out the exact framework by which a formally republican state could be led by a sole ruler, the result of which became known as the Roman Empire. The emperorship was never an office like the Roman dictatorship which Caesar and Sulla had held before him; indeed, he declined it when the Roman populace "entreated him to take on the dictatorship".

History
During his reign, gargoyles were scarce in the Roman Empire, but occasionally a gargoyle was brought into his presence. At that time, gargoyles' garments did not turn to stone with them, and so when they awakened from their stone sleep , their clothes would be torn apart in the process. Augustus disapproved of this display of nudity, and so asked his advisor, the original Magus , to solve this problem. The original Magus responded by placing the Spell of Humility upon every gargoyle in the world, causing their garments and possessions to enter stone sleep with them during the daytime henceforth. edit
Real World Background
Caesar Augustus was the great-nephew of Julius Caesar, born under the name of Caius Octavius in 63 B.C. He was adopted by his famous great-uncle, and when Julius Caesar was assassinated on the Ides of March in 44 B.C., inherited his wealth and estate. Octavius, then changing his name to Caius Julius Caesar Octavianus (Octavian for short), then rose to become a prominent political figure in the Roman Republic, during the civil wars that followed. He first allied with Mark Antony in the Second Triumvirate, helping him defeat his great-uncle's assassins Brutus and Cassius at the Battle of Philippi in 42 B.C, and then afterwards vanquished Antony and his famous ally, Queen Cleopatra VII of Egypt, at the Battle of Actium in 31 B.C. These events are portrayed in two plays by

Caesar Augustus Latin IMP·CAESAR·DIVI·F·AVGVSTVS 23 September 63 BC 19 August AD 14 ), known to modern historians as Octavian for the period of his life prior to 27 BC , is considered the first and one of the most important Roman Emperors , though he downplayed his own position by preferring the traditional Republic title of princeps, usually translated as "first citizen". Although he preserved the outward form of the Roman Republic , he ruled as an autocrat for more than 40 years. He ended a century of civil wars and gave Rome an era of peace, prosperity, and imperial greatness.

He ended a century of civil wars and gave Rome an era of peace, prosperity, and imperial greatness. He is generally known to historians by the title "Augustus" (revered one), which he acquired in 27 BC.
Augustus was born at Rome with the name Gaius Octavius Thurinus. His father, also Gaius Octavius, came from a respectable but undistinguished family of the equestrian order and was governor of Macedonia before his death in 58 BC. More importantly, his mother Atia was the niece of Rome's greatest soldier and de facto ruler, Julius Caesar. In 46 BC Caesar, who had no legitimate children, took his grand-nephew soldiering in Spain, and adopted him as his heir (see also adoption in Rome). He then took the name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus.
When Caesar was assassinated in March 44 BC, his young heir was with the army at Apollonia, in what is now Albania. He crossed over to Italy and recruited an army from among Caesar's veterans. At Rome, he found Caesar's republican assassins, Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius, in control. After a tense standoff, he formed an uneasy alliance with Marcus Antonius and Marcus Lepidus, Caesar's principal colleagues. The three formed a junta called the Second Triumvirate, and launched a purge of those allied with the assassins.
