The dating of the Primaporta piece is widely contested. It is thought to be a marble copy of a possible bronze original. This original, along with other high honors, was devoted to Augustus by the Senate in 20 BC and set up in a public place. Up until this time Augustus had lived modestly, but the fact that the statue was found in his widow's villa shows that he was thoroughly pleased with it. It is also contested that this particular sculpture is a reworking in marble of a bronze original, possibly a gift from Tiberius Caesar to his mother Livia (since it was found in her villa Ad Gallinas Albas in the vicinity of the ninth marker of the via Flaminia, and close to a late Imperial gate called Prima Porta) after Augustus' death and in honor of the woman who had campaigned so long for him to become the next Caesar. This would explain the divine references to Augustus in the piece, notably his being barefoot, the standard representation of gods or heroes in classical iconography. Also, the reliefs in the

Augustus (63 BC - AD 14)
A bronze head of Augustus   Augustus was the first emperor of Rome. He replaced the Roman republic with an effective monarchy and during his long reign brought peace and stability. Augustus was born Gaius Octavius on 23 September 63 BC in Rome. In 43 BC his great-uncle, Julius Caesar, was assassinated and in his will, Octavius, known as Octavian, was named as his heir. He fought to avenge Caesar and in 31 BC defeated Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium. He was now undisputed ruler of Rome. Instead of following Caesar's example and making himself dictator, Octavian in 27 BC founded the principate, a system of monarchy headed by an emperor holding power for life. His powers were hidden behind constitutional forms, and he took the name Augustus meaning 'lofty' or 'serene'. Nevertheless, he retained ultimate control of all aspects of the Roman state, with the army under his direct command.

Caesar Augustus, Quirinius, and the Census
By Dr. Richard P. Bucher "In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to his own town to register" (Luke 2:1-3).
"Caesar Augustus" reigned as emperor of the Roman empire from 27 B.C. to 14 A.D. (Or 727 A.U.C. to 767 A.U.C.), 41 years in all. The grandnephew of Julius Caesar (100- 44 B.C.), his real name was Gaius Octavius and he lived from 63 B.C. to 14 A.D. Because Julius Caesar had legally adopted Octavius as his son, Octavius took the name "Caesar" from Julius, which in later years became a name almost equivalent to "emperor." "Augustus" is a Latin term that means "worthy of reverence."
What exactly was it that Caesar Augustus decreed, according to Luke 2:1? The King James Version of the Bible says, "that all the world should be taxed." Most other translations say something like "that all the world should be registered" (NRS) or "that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world" (NIV). The Greek verb is apographo, which literally means to "enroll" or "register" as in an official listing of citizens. What was it then, a census or a taxing? Both: It would have been a census taken in part for the purpose of assessing taxes. But only in part. Augustus was very interested in the number of citizens in his empire; he was especially interested in whether that number was growing. This probably was the primary reason for the census (see below).

Caesar Augustus
by Steve Hale 'And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed' ( Luke 2:1 ). Thus, Caesar Augustus is important to us because: (1) he was the emperor when Jesus was born; (2) he was one of the empires greatest and ingenious rulers; (3) the Roman Empire reached its height under him. He ruled from 37 B.C. until A.D. 14.
Augustus' real name was actually Caius Octavius, and was one of three great nephews to Julius Caesar. Julius Caesar willed his vast fortune to his three grandnephews. Among these, he named Caius Octavius (Augustus) his son and heir.
This was especially hard on the famous general, Mark Antony, who was virtually sure he would be Rome's next emperor. Knowing Antony's ruthlessness and immorality, young Caius's mother warned him to stay in hiding. At the city of Tiber, he confronted Antony face-to- face. Caius Octavius was no coward, and at the time, he was only eighteen years old! After preliminary fighting (which Octavian won), The Second Triumvirate was formed. This was composed of: (1) Octavian, who ruled the West; (2) Antony, who ruled Egypt, Greece, and the East; (3) Lepidus, who ruled Africa.

Caesar Augustus
Caesar Augustus (23 September 63 B.C. to 9 August 14 A.D.) was also known as Gaius Julius Caesar Octavius or Octavianus.  He was the first Roman Emperor.  He ended a century of civil wars and gave Rome and era of peace, prosperity, and imperial greatness.  He required the name Augustus in 27 B.C. His father was equestrian and was governor of Macedonia.  The most important fact is that his mother was Atia, the niece of Caesar .  In 46 B.C. Caesar had no legitamate children, so he adopted his grand-nephew to be heir.  After Caesar's assasination, Augustus formed the Second Triumvirate with Marcus Antonius and Marcus Lepidus.  He defeated Lepidus first to control Africa and Italy.  He then had strained relations with Antony because Antony divorced Octavius's sister for Cleopatra.  He defeated his foes and became sole ruler of Rome.  Octavian was given the title of [Consul] .  This is where his power grew.  Some of Augustus's achievements and failures include the following: Before his death, he married his daughter to Julia Caesaris to his right-hand man, Marcus Agrippa and they had five children.  Augustus also had three step-son's from his wife Livia's first marriage.  He adopted Julia's first son as his own.  Later, he adopted one of his step-son's as well.  His co-heir's included:  Postumus Agrippa (Julia's son) and Postumus who was banished and put to death around the same time.  Tiberius ended up with the same powers as his step-father had.
