Julius Caesar (100BC - 44BC)
Bust of Julius Caesar   Caesar was a politician and general of the late Roman republic, who greatly extended the Roman empire before seizing power and making himself dictator of Rome, paving the way for the imperial system. Julius Caesar was born in Rome on 12 or 13 July 100 BC into the prestigious Julian clan. His family were closely connected with the Marian faction in Roman politics. Caesar himself progressed within the Roman political system, becoming in succession quaestor (69), aedile (65) and praetor (62). In 61-60 BC he served as governor of the Roman province of Spain. Back in Rome in 60, Caesar made a pact with Pompey and Crassus, who helped him to get elected as consul for 59 BC. The following year he was appointed governor of Roman Gaul where he stayed for eight years, adding the whole of modern France and Belgium to the Roman empire, and making Rome safe from the possibility of Gallic invasions. He made two expeditions to Britain, in 55 BC and 54 BC.

Z Julius Caesar Biography Gaius Julius Caesar (July 13, 100 BC - March 15, 44 BC) was a Roman military and political leader whose conquest of Gallia Comata extended the Roman world all the way to the Oceanus Atlanticus and introduced Roman influence into modern France, an accomplishment whose direct consequences are visible to this day. Caesar fought and won a civil war which left him undisputed master of the Roman world, and began extensive reforms of Roman society and government.
He became dictator for life, and heavily centralized the already faltering government of the weak republic. His dramatic assassination on the Ides of March became the catalyst of a second set of civil wars which became the twilight of the Roman Republic and the dawn of the Roman Empire under Caesar's grand-nephew and adopted son, Caesar Augustus. Caesar's military campaigns are known in detail from his own written Commentaries (Commentarii), and many details of his life are recorded by later historiographers like Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus, Mestrius Plutarch, and Lucius Cassius Dio.
Early life
Caesar was born in Rome to a well-known patrician family (gens Julia) which supposedly traced its ancestry to Julus, the son of the Trojan prince Aeneas, who according to myth was the son of Venus. At the height of his power in 45 BC, Caesar began building a temple to Venus Genetrix at Rome, signifying his link to the goddess. His father and namesake, Gaius Julius Caesar, achieved the rank of praetor (see cursus honorum). His mother was an Aurelia from the Cottae branch, a rich and influential family of plebeian stock. As a young boy, he lived in a modest house in the Subura quarter, where he apparently learned to speak several languages, including Hebrew and Gallic dialects.

Caesar, Julius (ca. 100-44 B.C.E.) page: After other military campaigns, Caesar finally returned to Rome where he had been named dictator. He embarked on an ambitious scheme of public works, vastly extended citizenship, and began to reorganize the government. He was extremely generous in forgiving his enemies, who, fearing that he would seize power for himself and overthrow the Republic, assassinated him on the Ides of March of 44 B.C.E. References to His Same-Sex Sexual Relationships Although Caesar married three times and had numerous adulterous relationships with women, he never denied or repudiated his relationship with Nicomedes. He even intervened on his behalf in the Senate, and suffered a rebuke by Cicero who alluded to their affair (Cicero would also write of it in several letters). Sponsor Message.

Caesar
(died 44 B.C.E.) By Plutarch Written 75 A.C.E. Translated by John Dryden After Sylla became master of Rome, he wished to make Caesar put away his wife Cornelia, daughter of Cinna, the late sole ruler of the commonwealth, but was unable to effect it either by promises or intimidation, and so contented himself with confiscating her dowry. The ground of Sylla's hostility to Caesar was the relationship between him and Marius; for Marius, the elder, married Julia, the sister of Caesar's father, and had by her the younger Marius, who consequently was Caesar's first cousin. And though at the beginning, while so many were to be put to death, and there was so much to do, Caesar was overlooked by Sylla, yet he would not keep quiet, but presented himself to the people as a candidate for the priesthood, though he was yet a mere boy. Sylla, without any open opposition, took measures to have him rejected, and in consultation whether he should be

His conquest of Gaul extended the Roman world all the way to the Atlantic Ocean , and he was also responsible for the first Roman invasion of Britannia (Great Britain), in 55 B.C.E. He extended Roman citizenship to all within the Empire, introduced measures that protected marriage and the institution of the family, reduced the national debt, and showed genuine concern for the welfare of ordinary Romans.

I appreciate history from all historical periods but I have always been especially interested in ancient Mediterranean cultures. Although I am fascinated by ancient Egypt, I became totally entranced by ancient Rome after reading the "Masters of Rome" series of novels by Colleen McCullough and in particular the life of Julius Caesar. McCullough's novels, " The First Man In Rome ", " The Grass Crown ", " Fortune's Favorites ", " Caesar's Women ", and " Caesar ", made this complex personality come to life. He was not the cold and calculating tyrannical conqueror often depicted by various historians apparently with their own political axes to grind. He was a tender lover, a skilled orator and advocate, a talented poet and historian, a consumate politician, and a man with integrity as well as cunning.and military genius. Because of my admiration for him, I decided to use my skills as a computer systems designer to resurrect Caesar by way of an artificial intelligence program developed by Artificial-Life, Inc

Julius Caesar
First Man of Rome
100 BCE to 44 BCE.
Men are nearly always willing to believe what they wish.
Gaius Julius Caesar was born on July 13, 100 BC to a patrician family who claimed descendance from the kings of Alba Longa (the original home of many of Rome's oldest patrician families) and through them to Aeneas of Troy and his mother, the goddess Venus. Caesar's parents, Gaius Julius Caesar Sr. and Aurelia were both from patrician families. Unlike many Roman nobles who lived in lavish homes on the Palatine, Rome's most fashionable neighborhood, Caesar grew up in his family's insula (apartment house) in the Subura, the city's poorest and most densely populated district. Living in the Subura exposed Young Caesar to people from the far flung corners of the Roman world. As was the custom among young Roman nobleman, Caesar studied rhetoric, history and law and trained in the martial arts. Caesar began his career in the Roman courts, where he became a successful advocate and a highly respected orator. In 62 BC, he was elected to Rome's second ranking political office, the praetorship . He was elected in suo anno , meaning literally "in his year."

(8 photos in photo gallery) Gaius Iulius Caesar (100-44 BCE) was a central figure of the last decades of the Roman Republic. He was an accomplished writer and orator, a brilliant politician and power-broker and an outstanding general, but he was also totally ruthless in the pursuit of his personal goals and ambitions, which included not only absolute power over the Roman empire, but also divine honours and recognition as a human god. The Early Years
Caesar was born in 102 or 100 BCE into the ancient patrician family of the Iulii who claimed ancestry from Aeneas of Troy, one of the mythical founders of Rome, and the goddess Venus The years of his youth were dominated by the conflict between the factions of Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornilius Sulla in the conflict between the populares and the optimates populares , since his aunt Julia was married to Marius. In 87, when Marius was elected consul with his ally Lucius Cornelius Cinna, this bond was further strengthened when Cinna gave his daughter Cornelia in marriage to Caesar. Julius Caesar is one of the most important people in the history of the world. The fabric of the Roman republic was growing weak, but when Caesar started annexing Europe, caused a civil war, and incited his own assassination by men lacking his brains or a backup plan, Caesar broke the tenuous thread, creating a power vacuum that was filled by the first of the emperors of the soon to be world-dominating Rome.
    Julius Caesar Summary
