    Julius Caesar Basics
Caesar (Gaius Julius Caesar) was born on July 13, 100 B.C. and was assassinated on the Ides of March (March 15), 44 B.C. He was a Roman statesman, general, and writer, considered by some to have been the greatest man of all time. Julius Caesar came from a patrician family, which should have inclined him to support the position of the more aristocratic Optimates party, but Caesar was the nephew of Marius, a powerful Roman leader who supported the cause of the Populares , and so Caesar also supported the Populares. Caesar created friction by maneuvering the first triumvirate (Caesar, Crassus, and Pompey) into power, and later, by violating Roman law when he crossed the Rubicon with his armed troops to march against Pompey and Rome.

    Caesar, Julius
This famous general and dictator from ancient Rome, Gaius Julius Caesar, was born in 100 BC. He was born into a wealthy family, was well educated, and was good at sport. While he was still a young man, pirates in the eastern Mediterranean captured him. When they demanded 20 talents (units of weight) of gold as ransom, or they would kill him, he allegedly said: "What! Only 20 talents? I will give you 50 talents for my life!" While messengers were sent to Miletus for the ransom money, Caesar joked with his captors and swore that he would hang them all someday. The pirates were greatly amused at his high spirits. They had no inkling that he would come back to carry out the threat. Within a few weeks after his release the whole pirate band was captured and killed. Caesar joined the Roman Army in 81 BC and was the first Roman military commander to invade England - the first invasion took place in 55 BC and the second invasion in the following year. Following his service in the Roman Army, he developed an interest in politics, and became a man obsessed to reach the highest positions that Rome could offer. He became Pontifex Maximus (High Priest) in 63 BC as part of a deal with Pompey, and Crassus, the so-called 'First Triumvirate. In 65 BC, Caesar was appointed an adele, and put in charge of Rome's public entertainment. As part of this very popular public position he put on games and festivals for the people, and as a result, he became very popular with the poor. He also courted the friendship of Rome's richest man, Crassus.

    Julius Caesar Biography
    Emperor Military Leader
Full name: Gaius Julius Caesar Caesar is remembered as one of history's greatest generals and a key ruler of the Roman empire. As a young man he rose through the administrative ranks of the Roman republic, accumulating power until he was elected consul in 59 B.C. Over the next 15 years he led Roman armies against enemies abroad, especially in Gaul, while fighting Pompey and others for political control at home. In 45 B.C. he reached his ultimate success, being named dictator of Rome for life. That rule was short-lived: the next year he was stabbed to death in the Senate by a group led by his follower Marcus Junius Brutus. Caesar's life and death were dramatized in the William Shakespeare play Julius Caesar , with Caesar's famous death line: "Et tu, Brute? Then fall Caesar!" Extra credit : Caesar is thought to have been assassinated on March 15th, a date known in the Roman calendar as "the Ides of March"... The ruling titles Kaiser and Czar are derived from the name of Caesar... Caesar had a famous romance with Egyptian ruler Cleopatra , and he fathered her son Caesarion... Caesar, Julius (c.100 - 44 BC)
    Roman leader
A rousing orator, brilliant general, and cunning politician, Julius Caesar was one of the dominant figures of Western civilization, paving the way for the Roman Empire.
Coming from a powerful family, he rose to a position of influence within the Roman political establishment. After several years of service in the Senate, at age 40 Caesar formed a ruling alliance with Pompey and Marcus Licinius Crassus. He then conducted successful campaigns in the north that brought Gaul under Roman control.
After the death of Crassus and the dissolution of the triumvirate, Caesar fought Pompey in a struggle for supremacy. In 48 BC he was elected dictator of Rome, improving provincial administration, extending citizenship, alleviating Rome's debt, and instituting the Julian calendar.
Despite his great talent and charisma, the autocratic Caesar was regarded as a threat to the Roman Republic, and in 44 BC he was assassinated by conspirators. His death opened the way for other would-be autocrats and actually hastened Rome's transition into an empire ruled by family dynasties.
