James M(allahan) Cain (1892-1977) American journalist, screenwriter, and novelist - identified with Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler and others as a central member of hard-boiled school of crime fiction. However, Cain's own opinion was "I belong to no school, hard-boiled or otherwise". Three of Cain's novels THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE (1934), DOUBLE INDEMNITY (1936), and MILDRED PIERCE (1941) were also made into classics of the American screen. His books continued to appear after World War II, but none gained the success of his earlier work. "I make no conscious effort to be tough, or hard-boiled, or grim, or any of the things I am usually called. I merely try to write as the character would write, and I never forget that the average man, from the fields, the streets, the bars, the offices and even the gutters of his country, has acquired a vividness of speech that goes beyond anything I could invent, and that if I stick to this heritage, this logos of the American countryside, I shall attain a maximum of effectiveness with very little effort." (Cain in preface to Double Indemnity James M. Cain was born in Annapolis, the son of an educator and an opera singer. He studied at Washington College, in Chesterton, Maryland, earning his B.A. at the age of eighteen, and masters in 1917. Cain worked as a clerk, a meat-packer, a singer, and a teacher. During World War I in army service he was the editor of the 79th Division newspaper

http://www.eskimo.com/~noir/btitles/cain/index.shtml
James M. Cain During the 1930's and 40's James M. Cain was, along with Cornell Woolrich Raymond Chandler , and Dashiell Hammett , one of the creators of the roman noir genre. Cain was born in Annapolis on July 1, 1892. He was raised in Chestertown, Maryland, and graduated from Washington College, where his father was president. After serving in World War I, he returned to Baltimore where he began working as a reporter. He first worked for the Baltimore American and then for the Baltimore Sun until 1923. After a time in New York, Cain moved to Hollywood. There he tried screenwriting, but found greater success when he turned to fiction. His first novel, The Postman Always Rings Twice , was published in 1934 and was a runaway bestseller. Cain returned to Maryland in 1948, settling in Hyattsville. He continued to write and was a familiar figure on the College Park campus. James M. Cain died October 27th, 1977. Cain did not write mysteries or detective fiction; he wrote novels of crime, sex and violence. The majority of Cain's plots follow the same predictable plan: a man falls for a woman, becomes involved in criminal activity with the woman, and is eventually betrayed by the woman. Although predictable, this basic plot line was used to great success, and continues to be serviceable today such as in the Cain-inspired films Body Heat or Blood Simple . Cain's writing style is hard boiled, pared down to essential phrases with terse, almost brutal simplicity.

Home About Us Site Map Help ... Shopping Cart Images+Detail Item Info CAIN, James M. The Final Issue of The Lorraine Cross France: 79th Division May 8, 1919. James M. Cain's own copy of the final issue of The Lorraine Cross , the newspaper of the 79th Division of the U.S. Army of the Allied Expeditionary Force in World War I. The Lorraine Cross was founded, edited, and largely written by James M. Cain, in part as a means of avoiding combat. This is the final issue of the paper, issued as the Division was returning to the U.S. The paper is quite browned, but otherwise fine. When Cain returned, he had this issue and some associated material matted and framed in period arts-and-crafts style oak frames, and hung in his own house. The issue prints a letter of thanks from the Division's commanding General Joseph E. Kuhn to Cain, thanking him and the paper's staff for their efforts on the paper. Also with: the original typed letter Signed from Kuhn to Cain (also framed by Cain). The letter is slightly darkened at the extremities from "matte-burn" but is otherwise fine. Also accompanying the letter and the newspaper is an original broadside printed in red and blue: "Have You Subscribed to The Lorraine Cross?" printed in red and two shades of blue with a comic drawing of doughboys reading the paper. This too has been framed by Cain in a compatible frame, and is in fine condition. Issues of The Lorraine Cross are impossible to find. To find Cain's own copy of the last and most important issue, along with the letter and broadside, is about as much as one could wish for of Cain's "juvenilia." For the three framed items.

Cain, James M(allahan)
(b. July 1, 1892, Annapolis, Md., U.S.d. Oct. 27, 1977, University Park, Md.), novelist whose violent, sexually obsessed, and relentlessly paced melodramas epitomized the "hard-boiled" school of writing that flourished in the U.S. in the 1930s and '40s. Three classics of the American screen were made from his novels: Double Indemnity (1936, filmed 1944), Mildred Pierce (1941, filmed 1945), and The Postman Always Rings Twice (1934, stage version 1936, filmed 1946, 1981). Cain graduated from Washington College, Chestertown, Md., in 1910 and edited an Army paper while serving overseas during World War I. After returning to Washington College for a master's degree, he worked as a newspaperman in Baltimore on the American and then on The Sun. He was professor of journalism at St. John's College, Annapolis, from 1923 to 1924, and editorial writer on the World in New York City from 1924 to 1931. For a short time he was managing editor of The New Yorker.
