Callaghan grew up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, his birthplace. He was educated at the University of Toronto, Osgoode Hall Law School. He never practiced law, however. During the 1920s he worked at the Toronto Daily Star where he became friends with fellow reporter, Ernest Hemingway formerly of the Kansas City Star. Callaghan began writing stories that were well received and soon was recognized as one of the best short story writers of the day. He then spent a couple of creative years in Paris, France in the late 1920s where he was part of the great gathering of writers in Montparnasse such as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Joyce and others.
He recalled these years in his 1963 memoir, That Summer in Paris. In this memoir he discusses the infamous boxing match between him and Hemingway. Callaghan took up Hemingway's challenge to a bout and, being a better boxer, Callaghan knocked Hemingway to the ground (along with his ego). The blame was centered on Fitzgerald's lack of attention on the stop watch as he let the boxing round go over time. This event injured the pride of Hemingway more than anything else.
Callaghan married Loretto Dee, with whom he had two sons: Michael (born November 1931) and Barry (born 1937), poet and author. In (1998) Barry Callaghan wrote a memoir entitled Barrelhouse Kings about his families writerly life. After outliving and outwriting most of this contemporary writers of his day Morley Edward Callaghan died after a brief illness in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was 87.

Scott Fitzgerald. Callaghan preferred to be known for his novels. It's his short stories however that will be his lasting legacy—along with the fact that he knocked down Hemingway. For as much as we appreciate he was the first Canadian author to rank among the modern greats, and as much as we can love the man's sincere, liberal heart and thoughtful mind as revealed in his writing, we can't help but feel there is something old-fashioned about his longer writing. Something of the kindly raconteur that does not quite go with the cut-and-thrust of modern novels. Something that exists in his short stories too, but which is constrained there by the form, compressed and made harder. Callaghan never really learned the different rhythms and intensities of the longer form (until perhaps very late in his career strangely), and his novels usually seem like long short stories.

As a young man, Callaghan joined The Toronto Star, where he met Hemingway for the first time, and where the seeds of his literary career were planted. Callaghan became a literary sensation at the youthful age of 25. When he and his new bride Loretto traveled to Paris in 1929, they counted among their friends James Joyce, Miro, Fitzgerald and, of course, Hemingway. But as much as Callaghan was feted abroad, his reception in Canada was always a bit more rocky. One Toronto bookseller refused to keep any copies of his first book, Strange Fugitive. Years later, when he received the Governor-General's award in 1951 for The Loved and the Lost, some critics still thought it was embarrassing, implausible, almost snobbishly liberal. His final years were ones of vindication and heartbreak. After years of being in the critical doghouse, Callaghan became the grand old man of Canadian literature. Sadly, however, he wouldn't be able to savour those moments with his wife and partner. Loretto died in 1984, after years of failing health. In the twilight of his life, Callaghan, headed back to Paris for a poignant, final visit to the city that had beckoned once before. He died three years later in 1990 at age 87.

Morley Callaghan
Star Weekly Strange Fugitive , appeared in 1928. In 1929, he signed with a publishing house in New York to produce his first collection of short stories, A Native Argosy . He married and sailed to France, where he socialized with Hemmingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and James Joyce in Paris. During a friendly boxing match with Hemmingway he knocked out the American novelist, and as a result their friendship was never the same. Callaghan was heavily influenced by American naturalist literature, apparent in such novels as (1930) and A Broken Journey (1932). His most commercially popular book came in 1934 with Such is My Beloved . He followed with They Shall Inherit the Earth (1936) and More Joy in Heaven (1937). These books, with their Christian theological themes, complex characterizations, and ambiguous treatment of love, established Callaghan as an important figure in North American literary circles. The Loved and the Lost . He also wrote That Summer in Paris (1963), a memoir of his summer in Paris in 1929.
