Calvino's Novels
by Gore Vidal B etween the end of the Second World War in and the beginning of the Korean War in there was a burst of creative activity throughout the American empire as well as in client states of Western Europe. From Auden's Age of Anxiety to Carson McCullers' Reflections in a Golden Eye to Paul Bowle s The Sheltering Sky to Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named sire to Tudor's ballets and to Bernstein's enthusiasms, it was n exciting time. The cold war was no more than a nip in the air while the junior senator from Wisconsin was just another genial pol with a drinking problem and an eye for the boys. In that happy time the young American writer was able to reel in triumph through the old cities of Europethe exchange rate entirely in his favor. Twenty-six years ago this spring I arrived in Rome. First impressions: Acid-yellow forsythia on the Janiculum. Purple wisteria in the Forum. Chunks of goat on a plate in a trattoria. Samuel Barber at the American Academy, talking Italian accurately. Harold Acton politely deploring our barbarous presence in his Europe. Frederick Prokosch at Doney's, eating cakes. Streets empty of cars. Numbers in the Dark and Other Stories
by Italo Calvino
(1996 Vintage, translated by Tim Parks) Review by Joe Cadora
For the reader unfamiliar with Italo Calvino, Numbers in the Dark offers an almost painless entree into the full range of his work, comprising as it does thirty-seven stories, fables, and fantastic interviews which range his career from beginning to end. And it is in short form that Calvino is most accessible, where his intellectual flights of fancy will not put off or lose the casual reader as can sometimes happen in his longer works. Calvino has most often been compared to the other major modern fantasists; Jorge Luis Borges, Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, and Franz Kafka. Borges' work, his ficciones, as he calls them, are intellectual labyrinths which draw on his erudition as much as his literary skill while Garcia-Marquez' magical realism aims to turn the mundane into the miraculous and vice versa. But it is Kafka who has really put his stamp on this century, and it may well be Calvino who puts his mark on the next. Combining the intellect and curiosity of Borges, the magical qualities of Garcia-Marquez, and the surreal atmosphere of Kafka, Calvino has created a literature with, arguably, a broader range than any of the others, and more than the others he is rooted in the post-modern world, having come of age fighting against the Nazis with the partisans in his native Italy.

It is a loose gathering of (mainly) French-speaking writers and mathematicians which endeavored to create works using constrained writing techniques. It was founded in 1960, by Raymond Queneau and François Le Lionnais, but included novelists like Georges Perec and Calvino, and poets like Oskar Pastior or Jacques Roubaud, also a widely-known mathematician. The term littérature potentielle can be roughly translated as: "the seeking of new structures and patterns which may be used by writers in any way they enjoy." Constraints are used as a means of triggering ideas and inspiration, most notably Perec's "story-making machine," which he used in the construction of Life: A User's Manual . Italian, 1923–1985
“I will begin by saying that I was born under the sign of Libra,†notes Italo Calvino in the brief autobiography offered in the guise of an appendix to Una pietra sopra: Discorsi di letteratura e società (1980; The Uses of Literature). The astrological detail may seem innocuous, but it is perhaps revealing of the ambivalence running through the Italian writer’s work. Calvino does, in fact, use humor to express his concern over what the modern world is becoming, and the place that man may yet take in it. Bearing at one and the same time the imprint of realism and the fantastic, his fiction writing—novels and extended short stories—has shown him to be one of the most original authors of postwar Italian literature. But it is also through his work as an editor, journalist, and essayist that Calvino has commanded attention as one of the outstanding figures of the cultural life of his country.
Italo Calvino
Six Memos for the Next Millennium (1988) brings together in one place five lectures (he had not yet written the sixth when he died), which Calvino was to have given at Harvard University. Working around five themes which he anchored within a literary discussion—lightness, quickness, exactitude, visibility, and multiplicity—Calvino attempted to draw up a memorandum for the forthcoming millennium, so that the aging world, with the weight of its problems and anxieties, should not find itself unprepared to face the future. In this posthumous book, we once again find the literary and existentialist questionings which guided Calvino throughout his work.
