Baguio City - The Beauty and History of Camp John Hay
With the increasing modernization and urbanization of beautiful Baguio City, there is much to appreciate about the cool and peaceful environment of Camp John Hay. Learn more about this wonderful tourist spot that is a must-see if you get the chance to visit the city. While Baguio City has retained most of its natural charm, cool breeze, tall pine trees, and vibrant flowers, there is no doubt that modern developments have somewhat transformed it into a budding urban sprawl. With more and more shopping centers and businesses putting up buildings, what is considered the central business district of the city is rapidly expanding. Perhaps in the next decade, or even sooner, the city will have turned into the busiest metropolis in this area of the country.
This is why both Baguio residents and tourists greatly appreciate the scattered areas in the outskirts of the city that remain naturally pristine and reflect the peaceful and quiet Baguio that once was. Such a sanctuary is Camp John Hay, an old American military base that has been transformed into one of the must-see tourist spots of the city.
Camp John Hay, or the John Hay Air Station as it was known during the American occupation, was built in October 25, 1903 at the orders of then US President Theodore Roosevelt. The camp was meant to function as the official headquarters and communications station of the American forces that were sent to

Published in 1939, John Steinbeck's novel The Grapes of Wrath drew attention to the hardships faced by the "Okies": poor farmers who moved from the Dust Bowl area to California in search of work. While writing the book, John Steinbeck visited Bakersfield, California and based his book on Arvin Federal Government Camp which he portrayed as "Weedpatch Camp." This camp exists today and is still used by migrant workers.

Introduction to the Aerostation This web site is about the early history of U.S. Army Ballooning; with emphasis on its operations during the Great War: and the period shortly thereafter. It will always be a work in progress, and feature many aspects of the activities and men of the U.S. Army Balloon Corps. Along with an abbreviated introductory history, there will be sections on: uniforms, insignia, gear, company rosters, photos, publications, references, dictionary of balloon terms, noted individuals, detailed histories of each Balloon School, all 102 Balloon Companies (as I compile them), links to related sites and then some. It will be presented in an easy to read, informal style. As I did my research, I found that there were bits and pieces of Balloon Corps history scattered about the globe: not one single place to get the information I wanted. Add to that, the shrinking numbers of WWI vets, it became more difficult. Since the events of 9/11, it has become almost impossible to get into the military's bases and posts: to be allowed to search through the archives. Most of those records are not going to become available on-line and a physical search will have to be done. Perhaps time will soften their attitudes and the general public will again be able to get access to those documents. In the quest for information, I have gleaned the web for data; dug through library stacks and files; rolled and scanned through miles of microfilm; searched the world's book stores for scarce and rare books; trod the ground that was Camp John Wise; interviewed elderly residents of the area; contacted authors; and hooked up with collectors from across the globe. In the process, I have met others who had a family member in the Army Balloon Corps, and we shared our data.

NEWSFLASH
CAMP JOHN HAY BECKONS Baguio City, June 29, 2002 (STAR) by Ray Butch Gamboa - Philippine summers are harsh and oppressive, but they’re everyone’s excuse to seek the exhilarating coolness of the mountains of Baguio. It’s just not complete without a trek to Pine City. Have you gone to Baguio lately? Fortunate if you took the Marcos Highway and found the wide, well-paved route a far cry from the pot-holed, landslide and road cut prone and time battered Kennon Road that wreaked havoc on your vehicle’s suspension and added at least another hour of bone rattling to your travel time. With this new alternative road to the country’s "summer capital" this smooth and safe, travel is a breeze. Our trip to the "city of pines" was through the invitation of our good friend and Fil-Estate’s corporate golf director, Jerric Hechanova. I am to include the Camp John Hay Golf Course as part of the series on "outstanding golf courses in the country" which I feature on our TV show Business & Leisure and similarly on this column. What met us was an entire leisure package. Camp John Hay’s total leisure package Camp John Hay, now operated by Leisure Inc. is located at Loakan Road in the city proper. The Camp John Hay Manor is an imposing edifice that exudes the warmth of Baguio’s character, surrounded by towering pines and sprouting riotous colors all over the sprawling estate. Majestic is the word for what greeted us as we got out of the Subaru Forester. Incidentally, the Forester was one great ride, a pleasure to handle, and made our travel a pleasurable sightseeing tour at a crisp pace. Embarrassingly, the racer in me came out again as I passed every single vehicle in front, what with power and high performance generously given by the Forester at a mere push of a button. There was no mistake when Nicky Mariano of General Motors Automobiles Philippines insisted that we used it for the trip.

A Little History of Camp John Hay
By Jun Ventura PHILSTAR.COM Publish Date: [Saturday, April 13, 2002] Baguio used to be a native Ibaloi hamlet called "kafagway" which means "a wide open space." The name later became "Baguio," which comes from the abundant moss called "bagiw." The Americans only accidentally discovered Baguio while in pursuit of Filipino revolutionaries in November 1899. With an average temperature of 20 centigrade (the lowest recorded temperature is 6.3 centigrade on January 18, 1961), the American colonizers found the perfect place for their troops to escape the tropical heat and in the process save money (they would have otherwise sent them back to the mainland). In the Second World War, this peaceful vacation camp was ironically the first to be bombed by the Japanese. Fittingly, the surrender of all Japanese forces by General Yamashita, known as the "Tiger of Malaya," was held inside Camp John Hay. After the Americans left, the Filipinos took control and in a public bidding in September 1996, the Fil-Estate group won the rights to develop this vast 300-hectare camp.
