Truman Capote - Frühstück bei Tiffany
Originaltitel: Breakfast at Tiffany´s
Erzählung(en). Rowohlt Verlag 1962
136 Seiten, ISBN: 3499104598

Introductory Notes Truman Capote (1924-1984) was born in New Orleans and educated in private schools in Connecticut and New York. As a young man he worked for The New Yorker . He received early acclaim as a writer, but he continued in the public eye mainly for his flamboyant life in New York City, where his substance abuse, mental illness, flamboyant lifestyle, and failed personal relationships remained the stuff of high gossip. Capote was a childhood friend of Harper Lee , author of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird . The young Dill in that novel was based on Capote. Some critics have argued that Capote actually wrote the novel, but there is no concrete evidence to support that claim. Capote is hard to categorize as a writer because he wrote so many different kinds of works: fiction, nonfiction, drama, and essays. But by far his most significant work, and the one he is principally known for, is

Disoriented by life in the city, he dropped out of school, and at age seventeen, got a job with The New Yorker Other Voices, Other Rooms , was published in 1948. Other Voices, Other Rooms received instant notoriety for its fine prose, its frank discussion of homosexual themes, and, perhaps most of all, for its erotically suggestive cover photograph of Capote himself. With literary success came social celebrity. The young writer was lionized by the high society elite, and was seen at the best parties, clubs, and restaurants. He answered accusations of frivolousness by claiming he was researching a future book. His short novel, (1958), took much of its inspiration from these experiences. With the publication of

Truman Capote (1924-1984) - original name Truman Streckfus Persons American novelist, short story writer, and playwright. Capote gained international fame with his "nonfiction novel" IN COLD BLOOD (1966), an account of a real life crime in which an entire family was murdered by two sociopaths. The Louisiana-Mississippi-Alabama area provided the setting for much of Capote's fiction. "Until one morning in mid-November of 1959, few Americans - in fact, few Kansans - had ever heard of Holcomb. Like the waters of river, like the motorists on the highway, and like the yellow trains streaking down the Santa Fe tracks, drama, in the shape of exceptional happenings, had never stopped there." (from In Cold Blood Truman Capote was born in New Orleans, as the son of a salesman and a 16-year-old beauty queen, Lillie Mae Faulk. His father, Archulus "Arch" Persons, worked as a clerk for a steamboat company. Persons never stuck at any job for long, and was always leaving home in search for new opportunities. The unhappy marriage gradually disintegrated. When Capote was four, his parents eventually divorced. The young Truman was brought up in Monroeville, Alabama. He lived some years with his relatives, one of whom became the model for the loving, elderly spinster of the author's novels, stories, and plays. "Her face is remarkable - not unlike Lincoln's, craggy like that, and tinted by sun and wind," described Capote in A CHRISTMAS MEMORY (1966) his distant relative Sook, Nanny Rumbley Faulk. Sook was sixty-something, "small and sprightly, like a bantam hen..." Capote's mother, Lillie Mae, wrote letters and telephoned to her son, often crying that she had no money and no husband.

Truman Capote (1924-1984)
  • Truman Capote was born Truman Streckfus Persons, on Sept. 30, 1924, in New Orleans, La. Later, his mother married Joseph Garcia Capote, a businessman in the East. At about age 11, Truman began attending school therefirst in New York City and later in Greenwich, Conn.
  • Truman was not very interested in school, but he did like to write. After graduating at 17, he went to New Orleans, then to New York City to write and work. In 1945 his stories began to appear in magazines. They won him two prizes. His first books were `Other Voices, Other Rooms' (published in 1948), a novel about an adolescent boy in a run- down Southern mansion, and `A Tree of Night' (1949), a collection of stories.
  • Capote rewrote his fantasy `The Grass Harp' (1951) as a play (1952). He also wrote the book and lyrics for a musical comedy, `House of Flowers' (1954). Capote's short novel `Breakfast at Tiffany's' (1958), was received extremely well, and made into a movie in 1961. In 1966 a television presentation of his short story "A Christmas Memory" won a Peabody award.
  • Capote became interested in the brutal murder of a Kansas farm family. For several years he dug up the facts, talking to everyone connected with the killing. The result was `In Cold Blood' (1966), which was based on fact, but read like suspense fiction and became immensely popular. It was produced as a movie (1967). `Then It All Came Down' (1976) also deals with crime and criminal justice. Capote also produced `Music for Chameleons' (1980), a mixed collection of short stories, essays, and journalistic reporting.

    Capote, Truman,
original name TRUMAN STRECKFUS PERSONS (b. Sept. 30, 1924, New Orleansd. Aug. 25, 1984, Los Angeles), American novelist, short-story writer, and playwright, whose early writing extended the Southern Gothic tradition. He later developed a more journalistic approach, notably with In Cold Blood His parents were divorced when he was young, and he was sent to live with various elderly relatives in small towns in Louisiana and Alabama. (He owed his surname to his mother's remarriage, to Joseph Garcia Capote.) Two short autobiographical pieces deal with this period: "A Christmas Memory" (1965, television; published 1966) and "Thanksgiving Visitor" (1968, television; published 1969). He joined his mother and stepfather at Millbrook, Conn., and completed his education at Greenwich High School. His first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948), acclaimed as the work of a young writer of great promise, tells of a 13-year-old boy's search for his father and his own identity through a nightmarishly decadent Southern world. Two years earlier he had won an O. Henry Award for his story "Shut a Final Door." This and other tales of loveless and isolated persons were collected in A Tree of Night The Grass Harp (1951) is a story of nonconforming innocents who retire temporarily from life to a tree house, returning renewed to the real world. He also dramatized the novel for the stage. In 1954, with the composer Harold Arlen, Capote wrote

    Biography
American writer whose books include "Other Voices, Other Rooms," 1948, "In Cold Blood," 1966 and "Answered Prayers," 1976. He received the O'Henry Memorial Award at age 18. Capote grew up in a small town in Alabama, living next door to writer Harper Lee. A slender southern boy, he amused his friends for hours by telling them stories. By age ten, he knew that he was meant to be a writer. With a girlish manner and lisp, he soon entered a homosexual lifestyle. Capote was forced to fend for himself after his mother, Nina, neglected him to glam it up in New York. His biological father was not in the picture. He attended Trinity school and St. Johns Academy in New York, and his mother married a well-to-do businessman. She later died of a drug overdose. While in his teens he was hired to be a copyboy at the "New Yorker," publishing his first work at age 16. Capote's career began in 1944 when he wrote his first short story, "Miriam." His first novel, "Other Voices, Other Rooms" was published in 1948. He then researched for six years to write the book "In Cold Blood. His work on "Answered Prayers" began in 1966, and in 1975, he published the first chapter in Esquire.

Capote, Truman. In Cold Blood. New York: Random House, 1965. 343 pages.
Summary. In Cold Blood is the true story of a multiple murder that rocked the small town of Holcomb, Kansas and neighboring communities in 1959. It begins by introducing the reader to an ideal, all-American family, the Clutters Herb (the father), Bonnie (the mother), Nancy (the teenage daughter), and Kenyon (the teenage son). The Clutters were prominent members of their community who gained admiration and respect for their neighborly demeanors.
After being introduced to the Clutter family, the reader becomes acquainted with Dick Hickock and Perry Smith. The two were former inmates who met in prison. After their release, the men meet up for what Dick calls Aa perfect score.@ As it turns out, Dick=s cell mate had worked for the Clutters some years earlier and suggested to Dick that he check into employment at the Clutters= farm because the Clutters were such friendly, kindhearted people. The more Dick learned about the Clutters, the more he considered seeking fast cash as opposed to employment. During the trial in the last chapter of the book, however, Dick admitted that his sexual interest in teenage girls was the most powerful force in his decision to invade the Clutters= home. (Perry stopped him from harming Nancy.)
