Seine ersten Erzählungen – darunter "Miriam" – wurden 1945/46 veröffentlicht. Sein erster Roman – "Other Voices, Other Rooms" (1948; "Andere Stimmen, andere Räume", 1950) – sorgte nicht nur in den USA, sondern auch in Europa für Aufsehen. Es folgten die Romane "The Grass Harp" (1951; "Die Grasharfe" , 1952) und "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1958;

Truman Capote (1924-1984) - original name Truman Streckfus Persons American novelist, short story writer, and playwright. Capote gained international fame with his "nonfiction novel" IN COLD BLOOD (1966), an account of a real life crime in which an entire family was murdered by two sociopaths. The Louisiana-Mississippi-Alabama area provided the setting for much of Capote's fiction. "Until one morning in mid-November of 1959, few Americans - in fact, few Kansans - had ever heard of Holcomb. Like the waters of river, like the motorists on the highway, and like the yellow trains streaking down the Santa Fe tracks, drama, in the shape of exceptional happenings, had never stopped there." (from In Cold Blood Truman Capote was born in New Orleans, as the son of a salesman and a 16-year-old beauty queen, Lillie Mae Faulk. His father, Archulus "Arch" Persons, worked as a clerk for a steamboat company. Persons never stuck at any job for long, and was always leaving home in search for new opportunities. The unhappy marriage gradually disintegrated. When Capote was four, his parents eventually divorced. The young Truman was brought up in Monroeville, Alabama. He lived some years with his relatives, one of whom became the model for the loving, elderly spinster of the author's novels, stories, and plays. "Her face is remarkable - not unlike Lincoln's, craggy like that, and tinted by sun and wind," described Capote in A CHRISTMAS MEMORY (1966) his distant relative Sook, Nanny Rumbley Faulk. Sook was sixty-something, "small and sprightly, like a bantam hen..." Capote's mother, Lillie Mae, wrote letters and telephoned to her son, often crying that she had no money and no husband.

Capote, Truman
From New World Encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Previous (True Cross) Next (Truman Doctrine) Truman García Capote (September 30, 1924 – August 25, 1984) was an American writer whose non-fiction, stories, novels, and plays are recognized literary classics. He is best known for In Cold Blood (1965) and the novella Breakfast at Tiffany's (1958). Capote, especially in his groundbreaking work, In Cold Blood, was one of the early pioneers of a distinctly modern novelistic subgenre, the journalistic novel that attempts to present the narrative in a hyper-real verisimilitude that is passed off as "reality." Capote helped to create the "mythology" of the genre, namely that of an artless presentation, when he announced that "every word is true," as if to suggest that his novel was purely an "eye-witness" account, and the effect of the story was not the result of a storytellers craft. The emphasis of verisimilitude treats materialistic "surface" phenomena as "reality." At least 20 films and TV dramas have been produced from Capote novels, stories, and screenplays. Capote was born Truman Steckfus Persons on September 30, 1924, in New Orleans. CAPOTE, Truman In Cold Blood NY, Random House, (1965). A review copy of his most famous book, a bestseller that redefined the boundaries between fiction and nonfiction. A story of the cold-blooded killing of a Kansas family that was shocking in its day for its portrayal of the lives and thoughts of the killers, as well as for its graphic violence. Filmed in 1967. This copy is signed by two of the stars of the film, Robert Blake and Scott Wilson , who played Perry Smith and Dick Hickock, respectively. Also signed by Academy Award nominees Conrad Hall and Quincy Jones , who received nominations, respectively, for Best Cinematography and Best Musical Score. The first blank has a paragraph of annotations in pencil about obtaining the signatures (at a 2000 screening of a restored print of the film); the book is otherwise fine in a near fine dust jacket. Laid in is a program for the screening; a review slip; and a hand-colored author photo, with photo credit on verso. A unique copy of this important book, seldom seen with these associated signatures, nor as a review copy, let alone both. A story of the cold-blooded killing of a Kansas family that was shocking in its day for its portrayal of the lives and thoughts of the killers, as well as its graphic violence. Inscribed by the author : "For Irene/ from an admiring friend/ Truman." Unsigned, the book is not especially scarce in the first printing it had caused a sensation when portions appeared in The New Yorker , and therefore it had a large first printing; however, because of its soft paper dust jacket, it is a book that shows wear readily. This copy has very slight bowing to the front board, and is otherwise fine in a very near fine dust jacket with a thin mark to the cover and a hint of sunning to the title block on the spine. A nice copy with a warm inscription. All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted. See more items by CAPOTE, Truman

In this riveting biography, Clarke, former Time writer, depicts the sad sequence of sparkling achievements and overwhelming despair that marked the life of Truman Capote. Between the publication of his short stories in the late 1940s and the success of In Cold Blood in 1966, Capote, Clarke demonstrates, was a supreme writing talent and an intimate of the rich and famous "swans"Babe Paley, Gloria Guinness, Lee Radziwillwhose names, with his, filled the gossip columns.
