Renowned Victorian author Lewis Carroll was born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson on January 27, 1832, in Daresbury, Cheshire, England. The son of a clergyman, Carroll was the third child born to a family of eleven children. From a very early age he entertained himself and his family by performing magic tricks and marionette shows, and by writing poetry for his homemade newspapers. In 1846 he entered Rugby School, and in 1854 he graduated from Christ Church College, Oxford. He was successful in his study of mathematics and writing, and remained at the college after graduation to teach. His mathematical writings include An Elementary Treatise on Determinants Euclid and His Modern Rivals (1879), and

Carroll Lewis Jr., developer and adventurer

HOUSTON CHRONICLE

Family photo Share Email Close [X] Lewis' forethought and meticulous work attitude had been reflected in each career task he took on, and he did it with zest and success, family members said.
World War II pilot
He was a B-17 bomber pilot who flew 25 missions in Europe during World War II. When he retired, Lewis used $1,500 he had received from the military to buy land in the Memorial area where he started to develop 16 subdivisions. Lewis' better known venture was a drive-in movie theater he built and opened in 1960 on North Post Oak just north of Katy Freeway. At the site, he also put in a large water slide and a 36-hole miniature golf course. He sold the theater in 1968. But Lewis later gave up his developer career for his true calling: unearthing Texas history.

Timeline Lewis Carroll is born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, Carroll invented his pen name by translating his first two names into the Latin "Carolus Lodovicus" and then anglicizing it into "Lewis Carroll." He graduated from Christ Church College, Oxford. Carroll remained there, lecturing on mathematics and writing treatises and guides for students The first recorded use of his pseudonym was when Dodgson submitted a parody to the magazine The Train. The editor of The Train, Edmund Yates, chose the pseudonym "Lewis Carroll" from a list of possible pen names submitted by Dodgson. Although he took deacon`s orders in 1861, Carroll was never ordained a priest, partly because he was afflicted with a stammer that made preaching difficult and partly, perhaps, because he had discovered other interests. Lewis Carroll is best known for ALICE`S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND . It is believed that this book was originally written for Alice Liddell, the child of the Dean of Christ Church college.

Biography
English logician, mathematician, clergyman, photographer and novelist, considered a master in the genre of nonsense literature. He is particularly remembered for his children’s books, "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, "1865, and its sequel, "Through the Looking Glass," 1871. Born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, he was the oldest son and third child in a family of seven girls and four boys. His father, Reverend Charles Dodgson, was the perpetual curate at the old parsonage at Daresbury from 1827-43, and his mother was Frances Jane Lutwidge. Growing up in an isolated area, Carroll had few friends, but he and his siblings always found ways to entertain themselves. As a young child, Carroll showed an aptitude for inventing games and making up stories. When he was 12 years old, the family moved to Croft in Yorkshire, where his father became rector; Carroll was now expected to contribute to "Rectory Magazines," a compilation of manuscripts. He not only contributed but was the author of nearly all that survive. He was educated at Richmond School in Yorkshire from 1844-45, and then at Rugby School from 1846-50; inherently shy, he disliked public school. Additionally he suffered from a bad stammer, and was often the target of bullies. After leaving Rugby, he studied under his father’s guidance for a year, and matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, on 5/23/1850, going into residence as an undergraduate on 1/24/1851. Excelling in his classical and mathematical studies during 1852, Carroll was given a studentship, and in 1854, he graduated first in his class. He moved on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in December of that same year. In 1855, he was made "Master of the House." He was appointed lecturer in mathematics, a post he held until 1881.

Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought. And, as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back. Come to my arms, my beamish boy! He chortled in his joy.
