Kit Carson
Enshrined in popular mythology even in his own lifetime, Kit Carson was a trapper, scout, Indian agent, soldier and authentic legend of the West. Born on Christmas eve in 1809, Carson spent most of his early childhood in Boone's Lick, Missouri. His father died when he was only nine years old, and the need to work prevented Kit from ever receiving an education. He was apprenticed to a saddle-maker when he turned fourteen, but left home for the Santa Fe , New Mexico area in 1826. From about 1828 to 1831, Carson used Taos , New Mexico, as a base camp for repeated fur-trapping expeditions that often took him as far West as California. Later in the 1830's his trapping took him up the Rocky Mountains and throughout the West. For a time in the early 1840's, he was employed by William Bent as a hunter at Bent's Fort.

Here's an article I wrote for Odyssey Couleur Travel Magazine about my wife Maribel and I having a couples getaway in sunny Orlando. I thought some of my fans might enjoy seeing a different side of me, as well as reading about some nice, warm weather during this brutally cold January. Greetings David:
Once again, I must thank King Carson for inspiration. In the midst of a heavy design work week I found myself stuck on several conceptual layouts. I pulled, 2nd Sight, fotografiks, Trek, and finally... the bible, Probes off the shelf and soon after had my project approved for next-gen edit. I greatly... look forward to your next volume as a new personal graphic assistant. We worked together years ago on a small private publication magazine and I hope to do so again in the future. You friend and fellow soldier in the graphic design holy wars, Mark Polansky. june 3, 2010.

(Lula) Carson McCullers (1917-1967) - original name Lula Carson Smith American author who examined the psychology of lonely, isolated people. McCullers published only eight books. Her best known novels are THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER 1940), which she wrote at the age of twenty-two, and REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE (1942), set in a military base. Both of the books have been filmed. Although McCullers depicted homosexual characters and she had female lovers, she dealt with the theme of homosexuality in a wider context of alienation and dislocation. "The late autumn sun laid a radiant haze over the new sodded winter grass of the lawn, and even in the woods the sun shone through places where the leaves were not so dense, to make fiery golden patterns on the ground. The suddenly the sun was gone. There was a chill in the air and a light, pure wind. It was time for retreat. From far away came the sound of the bugle, clarified by distance and echoing in the woods with a lost hollow tone. The night was near at hand." (from Reflections in a Golden Eye Lula Carson Smith (Carson McCullers) was born in Columbus, Georgia, the daughter of a well-to-do watchmaker and jeweler of French Huguenot extraction. From the age of five McCullers took piano lessons and at the age of 17 she moved to New York to study piano at Juilliard School of Music. However, she never attended the school - she managed to lose the money set aside for her tuition. McCullers worked in menial and studied creative writing at Columbia and New York universities. In 1936 she published in

Nyack, New York *Carson McCullers photograph courtesy of the Carl Van Vechten collection and the Library of Congress. BIOGRAPHY Carson McCullers is often mentioned in one breath with the preeminent figures of Southern literature, such as her contemporaries, Flannery O'Connor and Eudora Welty. Unlike O'Connor and Welty, McCullers left the Georgia and the South at seventeen and lived mainly in New York and Paris for all her adult life, yet her settings and characters are frequently Southern. Born Lula Carson Smith, she moved to New York at seventeen to study piano but ended up studying creative writing at Columbia and NYU instead. There she published her first story in 1936 and, in 1937, married Reeves McCullers, a serviceman and aspiring writer. They moved to North Carolina, living there for two years, during which time she wrote The Heart is a Lonely Hunter . The marriage was a tempestuous one, marked by separations and reunions, divorce and remarriage, alcoholism and suicide attempts. Reeves McCullers died in 1953 from an overdose of alcohol and barbituates, an apparent suicide.
