Papercovered boards with paper labels on the front board and the spine, issued without dustwrapper. A tiny nick at the crown, spine label a bit darkened, and a small split at the joint, still an at least very good copy. Cather's first book, a vanity press collection of poetry. Cather reportedly destroyed the remainder of the edition in 1908. This copy Inscribed by Cather at a later date: "For Edwin Winter, In return for a beautiful letter he once wrote me about 'My Antonia'. Willa Sibert Cather. Five Bank Street. March 15, 1920." Also laid in is a two-page Autograph Note Signed "Willa Cather," written in pencil, that addresses her attempts to visit her doctor, her inability to make engagements at present, and says in part: "I came home with gout, but I admit it only to old friends. Anyhow, I'm glad I had the Wine in Paris and the gout in New York!" The note is folded, and has a couple of small tears, but is overall very good. Cather, Willa Biography
Willela Siebert Cather (1873-1947) "She was a good artist, and all true art is provincial in the most realistic sense: of the very time and place of its making, out of human beings who are so particularly limited by their situation, whose faces and names are real and whose lives begin each one at an individual unique center. Indeed, Willa Cather was as provincial as Hawthorne or Flaubert or Turgenev, as little concerned with aesthetics and as much with morals as Tolstoy, as obstinately reserved as Melville. In fact she always reminds me of very good literary company, of the particularly admirable masters who formed her youthful tastes, her thinking and feeling." ( Katherine Anne Porter in Lesbian and Bisexual Fiction Writer s, ed. by H. Bloom, 1997) Willa Siebert Cather was born in Back Creek Valley (now Gore), near Winchester, Virginia. At the age of nine she moved with her family to a farm near Red Cloud, in the Nebraska settler country. There she grew up among the immigrants from Europe, most of them coming from Scandinavia, who were establishing homesteads on the Great Plains. The wide open spaces, bare "as a piece of sheet iron", and its people formed the background for half of Cather's novels and many short stories depicting the frontier life on the American plains. The new ranch was not a success, and in 1884 the family moved to the small railroad town of Red Cloud, where Cather's father opened an insurance business. Cather was educated at home, and later she attended Red Cloud High School. From an early age, Cather was troubled by her sexual identity. She preferred to dress in men's clothing and as a teenager she began signing her name "William Cather, Jr." and later Dr. Will." Cather was also active in community theater productions and often took male roles. At the age of fifteen she was in charge of the local newspaper for three months - her father had foreclosed a mortgage on the newspaper, and because he was not a journalist, he left the paper to Willa.

She is known for her depictions of life in the United States in novels such as O Pioneers!, My Ántonia, and Death Comes for the Archbishop. The first two are part of the so-called "prairie trilogy," which catalogs the experiences of a family of Swedish immigrants on the American prairie. The last depicts the clash between the Roman Catholic Church and the Native American tribes of the Southwest, namely the Hopi and Arapaho peoples of New Mexico, in which she portrays their own native spirituality in a positive light. Predictably, the Christian missionary priests are divided between the greedy, corrupt ones and the more saintly examples of the faith.

Early life
Willa Cather was born on a farm in Back Creek Valley (near Winchester, Virginia). Her father was Charles Fectigue Cather (d. 1928), whose family had lived on land in the valley for six generations. Her mother was born Mary Virginia Boak (d. 1931), and she had six younger children: Roscoe, Douglass, Jessica, James, John, and Elsie. In 1883, Cather moved with her family to Catherton in Webster County, Nebraska. The following year the family relocated to Red Cloud, Nebraska, the county seat. There, she spent the rest of her childhood in the same town that has been made famous by her writing. She insisted on attending college, so her family borrowed money so she could enroll at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. On her first day she dressed as her "twin" brother William Cather. While there, she became a regular contributor to the
