Catullus in modern high and popular culture
  • The epistolary novel Ides of March by Thornton Wilder centers on Julius Caesar , but prominently features Catullus, his poetry, his relationship (and correspondence) with Clodia , correspondence from his family and a description of his death. Catullus' poems and the closing section by Suetonius are the only documents in the novel which are not imagined. Catulli Carmina is a cantata by Carl Orff to the texts of Catullus. Catullus's character Aufilena has been used to denote an archetypal gold-digger. Icelandic musician and composer Jóhann Jóhannsson 's 2002 album Englabörn includes the track "Odi Et Amo", setting Catullus's Poem 85 to music. The new musical TULLY (In No Particular Order) , which appeared in the 2007 New York Musical Theatre Festival , loosely adapts the poems of Catullus while retaining the non-linear structure of the published edition, exploring his relationships with both Clodia and Juventius, renamed Julie, and the timeless nature of memory and love.

Description
Catullus, who lived during some of the most interesting and tumultuous years of the late Roman Republic, spent his short but intense life (?84-54 B.C.E.) in high Roman society, rubbing shoulders with various cultural and political luminaries, including Caesar, Cicero, and Pompey. Catullus's poetry is by turns ribald, lyric, romantic, satirical; sometimes obscene and always intelligent, it offers us vivid pictures of the poet's friends, enemies, and lovers. The verses to his friends are bitchy, funny, and affectionate; those to his enemies are often wonderfully nasty. Many poems brilliantly evoke his passionate affair with Lesbia, often identified as Clodia Metelli, a femme fatale ten years his senior and the smart, adulterous wife of an arrogant aristocrat. Cicero later claimed she poisoned her husband.

Catullus Warning: I'm old-fashioned on Catullus. Not that I believe in him as a poet of unmediated passion and romance, but that I am most interested in his place in the Roman poetic tradition and social context. The two books that I find most useful still are: D. O. Ross, Style and Tradition in Catullus (Cambridge MA, 1969) T. P. Wiseman, Catullan Questions (Leicester, 1969). Both of them have written more, and more recently. For Ross, see the first chapter of Backgrounds to Augustan Poetry (Cambridge 1975) and for Wiseman, a whole string of books, notably Cinna the Poet and Catullus and his World The basic questions (to me) remain: What is the significance of the arrangement of the poems? (traditionally: polymetrics, 1-60; longer poems, 61-68; epigrams, 69-116) Were they arranged by Catullus, or by an editor? Can one establish an internal chronology of the Lesbia poems? Note Wiseman's important demonstration that no poem can be dated (in terms of references to external events or people) before 56 or after 54. What is the relationship among particular poems (e.g. on Lesbia) in the three sections of the collection? In particular, what language (images, metaphors, word-formations) is used in the polymetrics and the epigrams? If you read each set of poems without knowing the other set, would you describe the relationship in the same way?

Catullus
Gaius Valerius Catullus (c. 84 B.C - c. 54 B.C ) was one of the most influential Roman poets of the first century B.C Of Catullus' life little is known for sure. He was born on the Palatine hill of Rome . He was an offspring of a leading family from Verona , but lived in Rome most of his life. In 57 B.C., he accompanied his friend Memmius to Bithynia , where Memmius had received a propraetor's post. Catullus himself, however, never held a political office. His poetry was greatly influenced by the Greek neoteroi , especially by Callimachus , who propagated a new style of poetry, deliberately turning away from the classical epic poetry in the tradition of Homer . Their poems no longer described the feats of ancient heroes and gods but concentrated on small-scale personal themes. Although these poems sometimes seem quite superficial and their subject often are mere everyday concerns, they nevertheless are accomplished works of art. The work of Catullus was handed down as an anthology of 116 carmina (presumably not arranged by the author), which can be divided into three formal parts: 60 short poems in varying metres, called

The Three Books of Catullus
Latin text with facing English translation Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader 5+ All texts last revised on 13 September 2005 Addendum Bibliography of Catullan Studies : This bibliography does not aim to be comprehensive. It consists entirely of (some of the) books and articles which I have read myself. The seventy entries, which are very diverse, should provide a good starting point for both the undergraduate and graduate student. Viewing Instructions: The easiest way to view these files is to simply right-click and save to a local drive, then read at your convenience. If the link is simply left-clicked, a new window will open with Acrobat Reader. A Note on This Edition of Catullus: Although most (if not all) critical editions as well as translations do not divide Catullus oeuvre into three books, ingenious research has indicated that in anqituity Catullus circulated in three papyrus rolls. Such a division most likely followed Catullus' own original intention. I, therefore, have merely followed the communis opinio in my division of Catullus. Just as in antiquity practical limitations necessitated the threefold division, this modern e-text benefits equally as well from it.

Catull
