2. Bruce Chatwin - Traumpfade / Songlines - LESELUST-Rezension
Rezension von Daniela Ecker in Leselust.
http://www.die-leselust.de/buch/chatwin_bruce_traumpfade.htm
Bruce Chatwin - Traumpfade
Originaltitel: Songlines
Roman. S. Fischer Verlag 1990
394 Seiten, ISBN: 3596103649

THE LYMAN FAMILY
A Story
"The word 'story' is intended to alert the reader to the fact that, however closely the narrative may fit the facts, the fictional process has been at work." Introduction to "What Am I Doing Here"
by Bruce Chatwin
NOTE: Although Chatwin warns us in his introduction that the fictional process has been at work in this "story," his warning is probably not strong enough.
For whatever his reasons, Chatwin, apparently well-known as a travel writer, has created a story which contains many clear inaccuracies, does not match most published descriptions of life on Fort Hill, and which seems to intentionally cast Mel Lyman and the members of the community in the worst possible light.
I started to annotate the article to show what I mean... but I got fed up before the end. Here's my introductory "annotated Chatwin's Lyman Family"
ST
I have a friend called Jack who has been writing articles on the alternative society for the Boston Globe . Mel Lyman, who is, I believe, a scion of Old Boston, spent time in California as a guitarist. He has returned to his native city where, in the thrall of lysergic acid, he has persuaded himself and the 'Family' that he is Christ.
The Lyman Family publishes a broadsheet called Avatar . It usually contains a photo of the Saviour, with his triangular jaw and crooked grin, floating through the galaxies in the lotus position. Here are some specimens of his prose:

Bruce Chatwin By Nicholas Shakespeare Published by The Harvill Press 591 pages, 1999 Buy it online The Golden Dilettante Reviewed by Jay Currie Dilettantes have a bad reputation. The idea that there is value in knowing a little about a lot has fallen on hard times. Instead of general knowledge, people are increasingly committed to niches and expertise. For those of us who dislike specialization, Bruce Chatwin was a beacon. Chatwin stands in a long line of eccentrics ranging from Richard Burton and Gertrude Bell on through T.E. Lawrence. Our current crop includes Redmond O'Hanlon, Robert Hughes and, in a very odd way, Gore Vidal. People who combine exploration, scholarship, intelligence and a sense of just how powerful prose can be. Chatwin , Nicholas Shakespeare's wonderfully written new biography, describes a life which had no limits at all. The son of a Birmingham solicitor, Chatwin barely managed to finish at a British private school. He got a job as a "porter" at Sotheby's. That was 1958 and the great boom in Impressionists and antiquities was just about to begin. Chatwin quickly became Sotheby's Impressionist expert and began to hone his prose writing catalog descriptions of the most unlikely objects . Chatwin etched the bones of his writing style describing the loot of Empire.

Biography
British writer and traveler who won international acclaim for books which were based on his nomadic lifestyle. Chatwin’s writing was both thrilling and absorbing, carrying the reader with him to distant lands, and few writers were able to capture their readers’ imaginations as effortlessly as he did. Born into a middle-class family, his father was a solicitor in Birmingham and was often away, sailing with the Navy. Chatwin received his education at boarding school and at Marlborough. He went to work at Sotheby’s in 1958 as a porter and rapidly progressed within the company due to an almost uncanny ability to spot fakes. His first novel, "Rotting Fruits," was written while he worked there. In 1966, he abandoned his promising career with the auction firm, however, to begin studying archeology at the University of Edinburgh; he flunked out halfway through the course. From 1973-76, he was a traveling correspondent for "The Sunday Times," London, but once again he broke from a seemingly secure life, and set off on a trip to Patagonia. His book, "In Patagonia," chronicled these travels, winning awards in Britain and the United States. Chatwin wrote in a style devoid of flourish, with a keen eye for the small, seemingly irrelevant detail, and demonstrated the ability to capture a personality with his words. He kept notes throughout his travels, using moleskin notebooks, filling them with stories about the unusual people he met. He often mixed fact and fiction in his stories, and in his own life.

For a lively discussion on the merits and dangers of developing Alberta's oil sands, come to the Plaza Theatre for a debate between Ezra Levant and Andrew Nikiforuk. Levant, author of "Ethical Oil: The Case for Canada's Oil Sands" will argue that the ethical cost of buying cheap oil from corrupt regimes is far too high. He feels that oil from a democratic state is an asset to world peace and stability. In contrast, Nikiforuk argues in his book, "Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and the Future of a Continent," that the environmental cost of developing Canada's oil sands will irreparably harm our environment. Nikiforuk would like an immediate moratorium on oil sands development. The event takes place on Sunday, November 7 at 11:00AM (doors open at 10:30). General admission is $5.00. Lunch is also available, prepared by Red Tree Catering. Admission plus lunch is $15.00; admission plus Levant's hardcover book is $30.00; and admission plus lunch plus Levant's book is $40.00.

Description
In this text, Bruce Chatwin writes of his father, of his friend Howard Hodgkin, and of his talks with Andre Malraux and Nadezhda Mandelstram. He also follows unholy grails on his travels, such as the rumour of a "wolf-boy" in India, or the idea of looking for a Yeti. This is the last of Bruce Chatwin's works to be published while he was still alive (he penned the introduction in 1988, a few months before he died). It's a collection of Chatwin gemsprofiles, essays, and travel stories that span the world, from trekking in Nepal and sailing down the Volga to working on a film with Werner Herzog in Ghana and traveling with Indira Gandhi in India. Chatwin excels, as usual, in the finely honed tale.
Customer Reviews
The title is the key I loved the book; read it years ago and am now re-visiting it. What always struck me was the title - without the question mark (?) - why do I see so many pages about the book on the web where a "?" is included at the end of the title? Adding it just demeans the author and the reader as well.

Chatwin, Bruce
Traumpfade

Spike on the enduring enigma of Bruce Chatwin's travel writing Bruce Chatwin was a truly singular voice in British travel writing, and whose silence is now all too apparent. Since his untimely death in 1989 of what was described at the time as a rare Chinese disease (but which was later admitted to be AIDS), several collections of his previously unpublished work have appeared. The latest of these is Anatomy of Restlessness: Uncollected Writings. This book, however, pays poor service to his name. Published under the auspices of a "sourcebook" of uncollected work it draws together various pieces from magazines and journals. The result is a misshapen assemblage that hides gems amongst the weak and the substandard. Chatwin's writing at its best is both thrilling and absorbing, capable of carrying the reader to untravelled lands, and Chatwin was always the best of companions. However, if Chatwin the writer was intriguing, Chatwin the man was so much more. His rich life, pushed and pulled by his demanding interests, was always present in his work. That is not say that he was example of that breed of traveller who batters you into submission with endless anecdote heaped upon anecdote. Rather, he introduces you to the sights of exotic lands, vast parties of characters, all set free to live an existence untrammelled by the author's irrepressible ego.

19. IN VIAGGIO Con CHATWIN
In viaggio con Chatwin, attraverso le sue opere.
http://www.url.it/adelphi/partenza.htm
