CHATWIN, Bruce The Songlines Franklin Center, Franklin Library, 1986. By general consensus, Chatwin's best book a "novel of ideas," as the publisher puts it, of Australian aborigines, and the questions about man that arise from the vast gulf that separates the culture of contemporary, Western civilized man from that of the wandering tribes of Australia, whose "dream tracks" or "songlines" delineate both a physical and a psychic geography. The correct first American edition, published by the Franklin Library for subscribers as part of their Signed First Editions series. An attractively designed book, in black leather stamped in brown and gold, in a pattern suggestive of the Australian aborigines' "songlines" that give the book its title. With a special introduction for this edition, which does not appear anywhere else. Signed by the author . Chatwin's signature is uncommon; reclusive while alive, he died three years after the publication of this book, at the age of 49. Fine. All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted.

With Chatwin
Portrait of a Writer
By Susannah Clapp
Alfred A. Knopf, $23
ISBN 0679410333 Review by Charles Flowers Often, biographers either come to despise their subjects or become so besotted that they eventually sound like them. Susannah Clapp, meticulous editor of much of the prodigal prose of the late Bruce Chatwin, leaps happily into the latter category. In "With Chatwin" she not only reflects her friend's prose style and fey humor; she also eccentrically breaks her story into a collage of themes. Though roughly following chronological sequence, this technique, like Chatwin's in "In Patagonia" or "The Viceroy of Ouidah," has a double effect: it focuses on dramatic highlights undimmed by dull connective material, it includes colorful characters and anecdotes that are interesting in themselves but not vitally relevant to Chatwin's life and writing and personality. Unfortunately, Chatwin's techniques do not always work as well on Chatwin in this memoir as they did on the geography of Tierra del Fuego or the history of West African slave trading in his own books. At his best, this highly original, often self-indulgent writer could bring unfamiliar landscapes alive, set an obscure human being before us in the flesh, or tease the intellect with off-center insights. In short, he could take us where we had never been in more ways than one. "With Chatwin," on the other hand, is not likely to attract very many readers who are not already acquainted with either the literary or the tabloid Chatwin.

Book Description
In Patagonia is Bruce Chatwin's exquisite account of his journey through "the uttermost part of the earth," that stretch of land at the southern tip of South America, where bandits were once made welcome and Charles Darwin formed part of his "survival of the fittest" theory. Chatwin's evocative descriptions, notes on the odd history of the region, and enchanting anecdotes make In Patagonia an exhilarating look at a place that still retains the exotic mystery of a far-off, unseen land. An instant classic upon publication in 1977, In Patagonia remains a masterwork of literature.

John Ure
Apr 2004 Hardcover Book Description For centuries, settled peoples have contemplated nomads with fascination and envy, or with disdain and fear. Both Americans and the British have had an obsession with nomadic peoples, stemming from their own wanderlust and admiration for the unfettered life. In Search of Nomads centers on four regions that are rich in nomadic culture-the Arabian peninsula with its Bedouin, the Sahara with its Moors and Tuareg, the mountain ranges of southern Iran with its migratory pastoral tribes, and the steppes of Central Asia with its Mongol horsemen and Tartar descendants. Author John Ure has traveled with all of these peoples and provides a brief account of the special characteristics and history of each group. However, one of the most appealing aspects of the book is the insight it provides into the often eccentric British and...

Nicola Gaiarin recensione di:
Nicholas Shakespeare

Chatwin, Bruce (1940-1989) page: His next book, The Viceroy of Ouidah (1980), was originally intended as a biography of Francisco Felix da Souza, a nineteenth-century Brazilian slave trader, but during its development was transformed into a mock-historical fantasy about a Christian slave trader and his African descendants who worship him as a demigod. The book was later made into the film Cobra Verde (1987), a loose adaptation by the German director Werner Herzog. Chatwin's third book, and first novel, On the Black Hill (1982), is situated in the English-Welsh border country, and follows the circumspect lives of twin brothers who remain for eighty years in the remote farmhouse in which they were born, tilling the soil, sleeping together in the same bed, and remaining relatively untouched by the advances of the twentieth century.

http://www.foto-reportage.de/artikel/rezension_chatwin.htm
